7+ exams 2024

Anyone else prepping for the 7+ this year? We are trying to work out how many schools to do exams for. Live in SW London and thinking about SPJS, KCS, WUS and Latymer. Seems like a lot for a 6yo but my understanding is it's best to do a few as their performance on the day May really vary at that age.
What resources are everyone using?

We are planning to try for KCS and maybe for one more but haven’t decided yet. There seems to be more and more candidates and higher and higher expectations every year so not sure how feasible it is. We have done all the usual bonds books, s&s and epp.

We've been working through 6-7 material and just started 7-8 material. Is the standard likely to be above those age brackets? My ds is at a state school but quite bright and just trying to work out how much extra we have to do...

Hi

I have found a brilliant tutor on the SuperProf website and we are going ahead with a trial lesson.

He has marked exam papers and has plenty of experience with fantastic reviews. However, I wanted to explore other options.

Would anyone mind sharing other websites to find good 7+ tutors for my DD?

Thank you

My 6yo did it last year. You are welcome to ask anything.

Do you have any words of wisdom for anyone going through it this year? It seems very daunting with the first exam less than 3 weeks away.

We are in the same boat. Aiming at WU and SP. At an international school which would be similar to state primary school so have to do a lot of the prep ourselves. Haven’t got a tutor. Working through 6-7 and some 7-8 material.

Any tips would be appreciate ! :)

Anyone sitting King’s next week? We are feeling the strain now with school, after school activities and trying to still keep the preparation going.

Pokemomm · 30/09/2023 15:38

Yes, we are sitting it next week. We were managing a bit of work most days over the summer but DS does not want to do any prep now that he’s back at school. We are still having a tutor once a week which I think helps

How did it go for everyone today at KCS? My DS said the reasoning was hard and maths was the new format, which they have announced recently so 3x10 mins and was also not enough time to answer all the questions. Apparently no dictation just listening, I’ve not holding my breath for this one.

Pokemomm · 07/10/2023 15:36

DS said he wasn’t able to answer all the questions and doesn’t sound like he was able to write a lot for the creative task so I think we are also unlikely to get through to the next round. Sounded quite hard!

I don’t believe they said that there is dictation, SPJS have this, but not Kings.

Moonface67 · 08/10/2023 08:08

I also thought there were less people than last year but I might be wrong.

Possibly people being priced out with Labour coming in and charging VAT?

Pokemomm · 11/10/2023 15:44

How did everyone get on with Kings? My DS has been called back for the activity/interview. We are pretty surprised as he found it quite hard and did not manage to finish the maths exam.

Congratulations - the key is that it's how they do relative to others, so even if he found it easy he may not have got through.

Moonface67 · 11/10/2023 16:09

Congratulations Pokemomm
We are also through and a bit surprised

Pokemomm · 11/10/2023 17:07

Ah that’s great news, well done to your DS also. Any idea of what the activities will involve? This is all very new to us.

I believe it varies based on what their weak points were in the test as they are given different challenges as groups. It looks like a lot of people went through to the next stage so they probably want to talk to the kids to get a better picture of their characters and abilities.

How is everyone preparing for St Pauls in particular? I think their Reading Comprehension is MCQ and they don't focus much on creative writing. Any tips there?

I was planning to buy some sample paper from exampaperplus.

I think many are moving away from creative writing as part of the initial assessment, as children have simply been memorizing sentences that they can apply etc....it's now dictation. However I believe there may be creative writing in the 2nd round?

Summermum86 · 13/10/2023 22:08

Creative writing is a big part of the second round at SPJ.

TresMamma · 14/10/2023 06:04

Oh ok. This is good to know. Thank you for sharing.
