@Candyfloss2
I would be worried about this "Our pace too overwhelming for him".
Do they mean he will not cope? Or will need permanent tutoring to keep up with their pace?

anxiousparent22 · 03/12/2022 11:24

@Candyfloss2 stunned that a pre prep can actually be overwhelming for a child...think you are better off without your DC in such a school!

Candyfloss2 · 03/12/2022 11:25

i called them . They say he is fussy about laptop and headphone and takes long time to get used to it .
and he won’t move around . While everyone else very lively .

and he told me teacher asking every one reading out loud “ we go for bear hunting “ .
he “ I am scared as they r so so loud I can’t hear my own reading and my own voice “ .
teacher also said “ go find a partner “ ((to do some drama rehearsal ? Or improvising .?)) he did try his best to find some left over alone kid but he is shy . So I guess no marks for team work .

then school feed back : we can not tell you that please don’t come back again for 8+ . But …. It’s up to you .

I also saw with my eyes :
a kid arrived at 8:30 out of school bus . As soon as his foot on pavement he vomit .
teacher say : send him home .

i didn’t see any hug or a piece of wipe or some water .
just : send him home .

Candyfloss2 · 03/12/2022 11:28

This school I can’t name it . But it’s kinda of feeder to St Paul and Hampton .
therefore I draw conclusion my DS won’t fit into St Paul / Hampton even if academic no problem at all.

in fact I know of a mum left this school at 11+ exit her reason is : her DS hates every week soccer in the mud near Tolworth in the dark in the rain .

Candyfloss2 · 03/12/2022 11:33

We will carry on trying 8+ 9/10+ just for fun . But I am now changing direction & focus onto 11+ grammar state.
simply as DS dislike any sports but very bookworm.

sounds like he won’t survive many 2nd round interviews for prep. Also those prep will be also wasted on my DS also, those amazing sport facility and sport lessons will be suffering for him ,while amazing treats for sporty boys .

Candyfloss2 · 03/12/2022 11:36

Good luck to everyone of yesterday city and today St Paul!!

we will give a final try for WUS in jan. But absolutely no expectation. Just to keep this Xmas busy as we have no travel plan anyway.

anxiousparent22 · 03/12/2022 12:28

wow it sounds like they dont care much for pastoral care...you are better off without!

Candyfloss2 · 03/12/2022 13:29

Also: this school is registration £100 . 7+ Exam another £100 .
8+ another £100

How was everyones spj exam? Ds says no comprehension

Mumofboys25 · 03/12/2022 14:34

Hope everything went well at SPJ today. Couldn’t get much out of my DS, just that the dictation was about treasure and there was problem solving in math And everything was great! 🤪

Glassofmerlot · 03/12/2022 14:49

Guess we all will find out on Monday🤣

How was everyones spj exam? Ds says no comprehension

interesting point. I wonder if different papers are set for different groups because my DS said he had a comprehension paper.

Mumofboys25 · 03/12/2022 15:19

My son said there was comprehension about a treasure something?!

Glassofmerlot · 03/12/2022 15:21

Oh it was the dictation with the comprehension? Or a separate reading text? As he says it was just the treasure one

Mumofboys25 · 03/12/2022 15:25

Sorry dictation was treasure and comprehension was a salty bay?

Glassofmerlot · 03/12/2022 15:46

He just remembered it when i said salty bay! Kids🤣 Massive welldone to all the mums who have been through these preps.

HisfirstwordMummy · 03/12/2022 15:52

My DS said the comprehension was only 9 minutes! I thought this was not correct. Would not tell me much else.

anxiousparent22 · 03/12/2022 17:00

my DS said similar - comprehension about a sea centre and turtles; dictation about treasure hunt

Glassofmerlot · 03/12/2022 17:16

HisfirstwordMummy · 03/12/2022 15:52

Yes, apparently it was 9-10 min or so

ItsRainingTacos79 · 03/12/2022 19:00

@Candyfloss2 I'm so sorry to hear that. That's pretty harsh feedback and sounds like they can't be bothered with pastoral care. Hopefully you're DS will come into his own and flourish in a more nurturing environment. Was the social aspect ever raised at your current school out of interest? Wishing you and your DS all the best for the next entry point.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 03/12/2022 19:13

@SparklySparky how was the feedback from your DD re City yesterday?

DS was in the last afternoon session (I think based on age group). I didn't get much out of him except that it was not as tough as the books we have been using at home. Although when he told me creative writing was about a picture of 3 people skiing I was a bit 😬😨.

Mumofboys25 · 03/12/2022 19:59

I think it was 3 people sledging

SparklySparky · 03/12/2022 21:52

@ItsRainingTacos79 Sounds like you’ve prepped him very well! Which books did you do at home? DD felt it was a bit harder than the ones she had done recently, she felt she did ok but on further questioning she has definitely made a couple of silly mistakes by not reading/understanding the question properly 😬 Was similarly perplexed by the skiing picture! Hard to make a story out of that, maybe they were looking for descriptive language more than plot. Highgate next then that’s it til January thank god, I’m so over it!

ItsRainingTacos79 · 03/12/2022 22:08

@Mumofboys25 Oh dear! 😭

ItsRainingTacos79 · 03/12/2022 23:44

@SparklySparky Well I'm praying it was as he said. Hard to take DS's word for it as English is not his strongest subject and he struggles with the inference questions.

We've been using a mixture of Bond 6-7 and 7-8 years, scholastics literacy 7-8 years, Schofield & Sims KS1 level 1 then level 2 and various CGP books. We started with the easier levels over summer which he did independently but as we moved on to 7-8 material he needed a lot more support due to not reading books at this level yet. To be honest I wasn't going to cover material beyond 6-7 but when I heard from parents who had tutors I realised they were all working at a much higher level 😬

Agree about the story visual - it's not the most familiar of settings for us.

DS doesn't recall anything resembling verbal or non verbal reasoning - is that the case with your DD? He did mention doing a word search as an extension 🤷🏽‍♀️

Good luck with Highgate. We have that on Monday too. Then it's a breather before WUS and UCS in Jan - so glad they've ditched creative writing. Writing meaningful sentences is challenging enough 😅. I mentally checked out of prepping about a month ago because there is no way DS will miraculously move up 2 or 3 reading levels in this time.

I'm bracing myself for whatever outcome - I'm done with it all. My next focus is on getting other DS through the 11+ after all this is over 😩

Wishing everyone the best of luck!🍀
