3+4+5+7+ support thread mumteacher 2021

I know it’s a little later than usual but here it is! #letsdothis

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas

@mumlife43 totally agree. These kids are all so wonderful and the sad fact is there are way more applicants than spaces. That being said it will sting a bit. From previous posts looks like the results for Habs etc come out quite early in the day. Good luck to us all!

We are in waitlist limbo too…. Waiting for Channing and got waitlisted at SHHS… Does anyone have experience with how much it moves and if we can do anything to improve our chances?

ISW2022 · 30/01/2023 12:04

@sunrise16 We also have an offer from Channing so I would love to hear about your experience with the school. My daughter really enjoyed the assessments and I know Channing is strong in arts, music and also very nurturing. Is this your experience? What about sports/STEM? We aren’t that close to the school (QP way) so she would be taking the newly introduced coach service if she goes. Do you think not being close affects the ability to form local friendships? Are most of the girls from around Highgate? Thanks in advance!

sunrise16 · 30/01/2023 12:11

Hi @ISW2022 - I would say don't lose hope, anecdotally most friends whose daughters were waitlisted were then offered places afterwards. Most people applying to Channing also apply to the likes of SHHS, Habs, Highgate etc so there will be a lot of people taking stock over the next few days then releasing places. Fingers crossed for you!
I would say Channing is fantastic in arts, music and STEM and definitely very nurturing. It's nice that it's two form entry so the teachers know the whole year and the girls form friendships across the classes. I know the reputation is not so good for sport but I would say it's improving massively, helped by the fantastic new facilities that were built recently.
In terms of local friends, I would say the vast majority of girls do live locally (unlike Highgate, where the majority are driving distance IME). It's definitely not ideal to be a drive away but some of the parents I know who were initially further decided to move closer once they got a place in the school.

My DD has just been put on the wait list for SHHS 7+ Does anyone know or have any experience of there being much movement there at 7+. She’s going to be heartbroken when I tell her the news.

hopefulmum16 · 30/01/2023 12:17

Does anyone know when does UCS typically come out with the results - its tomorrow but want to check how many hours of torture would have to endure while waiting? I hope not like Highgate at 5pm !

primrosemum86 · 30/01/2023 13:01

Last year UCS was around 10-11 AM. Good luck! It is such a great school

hopefulmum16 · 30/01/2023 13:02

Thanks @primrosemum86 Keeping fingers crossed !

BabyLemonady · 30/01/2023 13:34

The lists will start to move as people start to decline. We are going to decline SHHS 7+ today so it moves sooner rather than later. Others will wait until after the Offer Holders events. We love the school but logistically too difficult for us. I hope you get a place!

ISW2022 · 30/01/2023 13:49

@BabyLemonady thanks! We are looking for a 4+ entry. Fingers crossed!

BabyLemonady · 30/01/2023 13:53

Sorry I should have clarified that it was a reply for @Hopefulmum7 . Best of luck!

ISW2022 · 30/01/2023 13:55

@BabyLemonady no worries 😉 Just out of curiosity, so you know the date of the offer holders event? It would be helpful to gauge timelines of waitlist movement.

mumoftwo86 · 30/01/2023 14:06

@ISW2022 hope this makes you feel positive but I know two people rejecting the waiting list place which would mean that you’ve got a better chance.

Hopefulmum7 · 30/01/2023 14:28

Thank you so much for letting me know that @BabyLemonady, hopefully my daughter is not too far down the wait list. May I ask where you have decided to accept instead?

ISW2022 · 30/01/2023 14:31

@mumoftwo86 thanks for the info! Definitely keeps the flame alive 😜

BabyLemonady · 30/01/2023 14:37

@Hopefulmum7 not 100% decided but likely NLCS.

@ISW2022 the offer holder event is next week.

Wishing you all the best!

The lists will start to move when enough people decline. All these schools are as aware as you are that many parents apply to many schools, and none of them are foolish enough to believe that they are the first choice of every parent that they offer. They all over-offer, to varying degrees, and resort to their waiting lists only when they become convinced that they were overly optimistic about their "yield". In some years, that's never.

A few years ago, the deadline to accept SHHS offers was noon on a Wednesday. A friend whose DD was on the waitlist was in a meeting and later found a missed a call from the school at 12:01. Thankfully for her, her DH took the call on his phone at 12:02. Moral of the story: keep your phone with you at the deadline if you're on one of these waiting lists.

mumoftwo86 · 30/01/2023 21:23

@4pluscraziness - how did it go with habs?

4pluscraziness · 30/01/2023 21:27

Hi @mumoftwo86. Really happy as did receive an offer which we are accepting. How about you?

ISW2022 · 30/01/2023 22:02

@expat96 good to know. To be fair, I’m getting fed up with the North London private school games. What will be, will be. In the grand scheme of things, most of us on here have offers from great schools, we are all clearly involved parents, so kids will be more than fine.

mumoftwo86 · 31/01/2023 07:02

Hi @4pluscraziness we were waitlisted for habs. I hope a space opens up for us as it is our first choice. If anyone knows if habs over offer or ever end up going in to their waiting list, any insight appreciated.

4pluscraziness · 31/01/2023 07:06

@mumoftwo86
Really hope a space opens up for your DD. The wait must be hard. No previous experience of w/l other than previous posts on here which does often talk about people getting spaces from the w/l. Can the school give info about how many waitlisted etc or your position? Good luck and hope it works out.

mumoftwo86 · 31/01/2023 07:34

@4pluscraziness a bit of a minefield/hearsay. Some say that habs don’t over offer by so much so there is a possibility but it will depend on how many on waiting list. I know we are one of two families from our nursery alone. Thanks for the wishes, very much hope we get a place. Here’s to still hoping, and now sleeping for another couple of weeks !
