3+4+5+7+ support thread mumteacher 2021

I know it’s a little later than usual but here it is! #letsdothis

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas

@howmuchisthatdog

I have also bought the 3+/4+ prep book. It looks good. We have a few weeks ahead of round 2 so will give it a go.
What book and what round 2 are you sitting
Stressed2022 · 22/12/2021 10:28

Toktokboki some so called "tutor" is here only to promote their overly priced book! avoid it and concentrate on preparing your child.

wondermom2019 · 26/12/2021 18:26

@Toktokboki

Anyone have experience of the Habs second round at 4+?
Hi, sorry dont have answer to this but rather a question. Are you referring to Habs boys 4+? If so, any pointers on what kind of things they ask in first round? My DS will be registering for 2023 intake. Wondering what to expect, given this is the first year they are doing a 4+ assessment
howmuchisthatdog · 30/12/2021 22:57

stressed2022
I am not sure what you mean.
Someone recommended a book for 3 / 4+ preparation.
I bought it and thought it was good.

I am not a tutor. I have no clue as to where to start to help my children who will be sitting thse schhol assessments this year. I am not educated from this country.

As to the price of the book - this book is tailored for the school exams so yes it not for your average Joe. For that there is your bond / letts books books at £5 a pop.
The book is £16 which is the price of a puzzle or good board game - so not expensive in my view.

The way I see it if my child was going for a biology exam and there was a resource that would help prepare them for the exam I would buy it.
For me this is no different. I dont know about these assessments and this book helps children prepare for that.
That is it!

How can I prepare my children if I dont know what to prepare them on?
That why I came to this support post to see if there was anything that I could learn about these assessments to help my children.

Is that not what were all doing here?

IF you can not help/be support then maybe you should scroll on, because as your name suggests this process is stressful enough!

For anyone who wants to know where they can buy the book I am happy to give the details. Beacuse I for one am helpful!!

habsboys2020 · 31/12/2021 00:18

@howmuchisthatdog I think @Stressed2022 has a point. The book is certainly overpriced. You may not feel so if you have not explored many free resources / cheaper resources that are available. It is certainly by a tutor (not sure about their success rate). It is way over priced in my opinion and has pretty basic worksheets. You can make loads of them yourself.
This is just my opinion ... £16 for such a book is so over the top.

howmuchisthatdog · 31/12/2021 03:32

habsboys if you know what youre doing then yes free resources could be explored as an option.
Like I said for those of us taking stabs in the dark this book is a great guide.
This book is written by an individual that has years of experience preparing children for school assessments.
The discussions points at the end of each page are questions that have come up in assessments historically (the author has collated data over the years and presentated it as topics for discussion in the book )
SOme of these are things I would not myself have thought to ask my children. Maybe because I am not educated in this country.

But for me this book has been a great guide.
And if I can afford thousands of ponuds in fees for private school I can afford £16 for a good book for my children. - merely the cost of two cocktails!

It is down to how much you know and how much time, energy, money one is willing to spend for their children.
For me I do not have the time to spend hours scrolling through online sites finding free resources signing up to websites etc.
I have everything in one place.
My children wake up have breakfast and spend 10 mins doing their book.
DOne!
I am happy
I wish you good luck with your journey for the assessments.

Toktokboki · 31/12/2021 10:29

These threads aren't really helpful anymore (or where they ever?). Just a bunch of people watching, remaining quiet until the end, and then saying "oh my kid got a scholarship to NLCS!".

Does ANYONE know anything about what we can expect in second rounds?

Northlondonmum2022 · 31/12/2021 19:20

@howmuchisthatdog

I would be very grateful for details of the book if you wouldn't mind sharing the details please. Thank you in advance.

Mumteacher1 · 02/01/2022 01:04

toktokb well done on making to round 2.
Practice phonics with your child and a lot of number logic work. How many teddies in my hand? How many if I add one more?

Hi, most grateful for any advice re 2nd round of Highgate

Mumteacher1 · 03/01/2022 23:55

chael21 lots of talking around favourite books, characters within.
discuss which are favourite toys and why. talk about transport vehicles and where you can travel in them - aeroplane to American but not train.
Extend the conversations by letting your child explore avenues even though they may not make sense- what would you change about an aeroplane to make it better? The child may say put skis on it so it can come down a mountain.

Toktokboki · 06/01/2022 15:37

@Bertie1812

We're not doing 7+, but she could mean second round

Anyone know when St H let you know if you've got second round? we had our assessment today.

Bertie1812 · 06/01/2022 17:44

Possibly. We are doing girls 4+ but know a lot of kids that sat habs 7+ before Xmas

habsboys2020 · 06/01/2022 17:53

That was round 1 for boys 7+ ... this is second round that went online now

Toktokboki · 06/01/2022 19:22

Do you know how many went through to round 2 for 4+?
ZaphodBeeblerox · 06/01/2022 19:46

How much do you tell the kids before the 4+ assessments? We’ve done little to no prep with DD (because she’s in a hothouse pre-prep anyway.. and I figure if the school doesn’t think she’s ready as she is then it isn’t the right school for her).
I’m very anxious at the moment, but trying not to let it show to her.

sunrise16 · 06/01/2022 20:22

Where is your DD sitting for, @ZaphodBeeblerox ?

ZaphodBeeblerox · 06/01/2022 21:04

We’re trying out for NLCS, SHHS, Channing, St Christopher’s. Any other parents in N London doing the 4+??

Bertie1812 · 06/01/2022 22:14

For habs? No idea but we had second round today

habsboys2020 · 06/01/2022 22:17

@Bertie1812 did you have second round of habs 4+ girls today?

Toktokboki · 06/01/2022 22:19

How did it go?

Bertie1812 · 06/01/2022 22:26

Yes

Bertie1812 · 06/01/2022 22:41

@Toktokboki

How did it go?
It was fine, she came out very happy but who knows… she was only 3 at the very end of august so will see what happens…
