7+ exam

Anybody taking the 7+ exam this year? I have noticed there isn't a thread on it this year. We are going to be trying for St Paul's and Kings. At the moment we are really struggling with the comprehension. Anybody else in the same boat?

Thanks! Are you 7+ or 8+?

Ignore me! Just realised you are 8+

Us and 2 other families of friends for 7Plus

FriendlyMom · 23/01/2022 15:40

@7PlusPP1234

Similar position . Not sure if we would want the child to go through the same process again . Although he got through round 2 in both so he is very close but not enough for 7+.

Do we need to register / apply again for 8+ ?

It is definitely worth it. We also got to interview stage and even WL in some of those schools last year, and now have offers from WUS and SPJ at 8+. You will be surprised how much your son has learnt and it is definitely not a re-start of the whole process. In addition, they mature so much over that period of 6+ months and that makes a huge difference! For SPJ you have to register from start, for WUS you just have to update your information on the website to reflect your interest in the 8+ process.

Thank you @FriendlyMom

muminwood · 23/01/2022 16:01

We have been invited to apply at 8+ too for WUS and SPJ. We are still waiting to hear back from another school however I’m not sure we have it in us to do the process again. @FriendlyMom @Muminmum how long before did you start the 8+ prep post 7+?

We also don’t come from feeder prep schools. Are there any DS who has got any of the top 3 coming from non feeder prep schools? @Dingdong44 comment has me worried.

FriendlyMom · 23/01/2022 16:15

@muminwood we are not coming from a feeder prep school. We did start seriously around April after the 7+, after a brief rest. However, we were much more "efficient" in preparation - because of the whole maturity thing, he would understand new concepts faster and apply them better. Also, we spent much more time doing creative things, like puzzles (Bond has these puzzle books and games for clever kids series), word ladders, sudoku and crosswords. Learning through play. Totally different approach from the year before when we'd drill EPP tests and the like. And this is actually what schools look for - the open and creative approach to learning. This whole new approach was much more enjoyable for us and I think this also played a major role. That is why I say that the prep for the 7+ lays the foundation. The 8+ covers the same grounds, just adding a bit more depth (someone mentioned smaller fractions, decimals, etc), presented in mostly Problem solving format - the steps for finding the solution increase.
Similar for comprehension - the depth increases, there will be less information retrieval, and more inference and opinion, vocabulary depth - more figurative language, phrases, idioms, etc. Hopefully this gives a perspective.

So helpful. Thanks @FriendlyMom

2minutesplease · 23/01/2022 21:12

@muminwood, my DS secured offers from KCS and SPJ (he didn’t sit WUS) and he comes from a state primary. Everything is possible.

mominator7plus · 24/01/2022 12:41

Hello,

Congratulations to everyone who got a place. We got through to the assessment stage at St.Pauls and WUS but sadly no offers.

Can anyone advise how many places are there at the three schools at 8+ and how many sit the exams?

Just trying to get an idea of the competition at that stage.

Thanks

WUS: 300 exam / 60 interview / max 22 spaces (both 7+ and 8+ in take)
puzzledmom · 24/01/2022 13:13

@mominator7plus it seems that at 8 plus Spj only has 18 places. This is from online research over weekend. Would be great if someone can confirm

muminwood · 24/01/2022 13:52

@puzzledmom that’s right. SPJ takes 18 students at 8+.

7PlusPP1234 · 24/01/2022 21:59

From what I have gathered so far , the most bright students are already through 7+ . So if your DS is through 2nd round of WUS / SPJ then hopefully you are close to top of competition at 8+. However number of seats are lower especially SPJ so competition remains high , may be WUS would be easier given they are taking 22 kids again.

Archibald33 · 24/01/2022 23:06

Hi All - thanks for keeping the conversation going on this thread. @FriendlyMom I found your reply particularly helpful :-)

We are in a similar position as some of you. DS sat 7+ for SPJ and WUS, got through to interviews but no offers. Both schools have recommended we try at 8+. Feedback was: he is very strong at math but needs to improve his writing ability.

DS is late July born (on the younger end of his cohort) , goes to a state primary and did not have 1-1 tutoring. We now want to find a tutor who can help with the writing aspect for 8+ as we think he may stand a good chance next year. We are North London based and would greatly appreciate tutor recommendations. Thanks!

mominator7plus · 25/01/2022 12:01

Thank you so much @elij @puzzledmom @muminwood and @7PlusPP1234plus for your feedback

Waitlist1234 · 25/01/2022 18:26

Hi all did anyone went to the SPJ tour today? How did it go?

Jesse21plus · 26/01/2022 16:53

We were planning to go to the SPJ tour but DC was sick so we couldn’t make it. Would be nice to hear experience from others who managed to attend.

We have decided to go to SPJ and will reject WUS and KCS. So hope people with DC on waiting list for them could receive offer soon

waitlist7 · 26/01/2022 17:04

@Jesse21plus you made my day!))

Amarzoo · 26/01/2022 17:07

Is the city of London results expected today ? Has anyone heard anything yet ?

puzzledmom · 26/01/2022 17:40

@Amarzoo nothing yet from city...!

@waitlist7 do you know if WUS has over offered at all? We are on waitlist for SPJ but they seem to have over offered quite a bit so no movement. Only movement happened when someone on WL above us pulled out.

crazylikeyou · 26/01/2022 17:46

Still nothing from City! Their email said "We will send out offers of places via email on Wednesday 26 January 2022."

Does this mean that only offers are sent out today?

waitlist7 · 26/01/2022 17:54

@puzzledmom I think they over offered by 2-3 places, plus a very small waiting list. Our chances are slim but we keep hoping.

puzzledmom · 26/01/2022 18:05

@Amarzoo just got the email; we're on waitlist.. again!

crazylikeyou · 26/01/2022 18:10

@puzzledmom did you receive an email from City?...
