When did you/your DD start periods?

I was 13 and DD is now nearly 13, but not started yet, though she’s needed a bra for a couple of years and is already as tall as me. She’s still very slim though (unlike her mother!). I guess it won’t be long until she starts and I feel a bit as if I’m on standby.

How old were you in comparison with your DDs?

YellowPlumbob · 04/09/2022 22:02

I was 16.

DD1 was 11 and in Y7 (summer born).
DD2 was 11 and in Y6 (autumn born).

Neither are overweight, not even close. Same short, bony frame as me.

GG1986 · 04/09/2022 22:32

1 month before I turned 13. My niece was 10!

bjjgirl · 05/09/2022 08:04

Dd1 was 12 - the first day of her holiday with her dad, I don't know whom was more traumatised, luckily were great friends, my ex and 1, so I talked him through everything. I had told both of them to pack things in case as I was expecting it to be imminent but as usual my advice was ignored.

Dd2 is 11 and is showing all the signs but no period yet, I do think however it will be coming shortly

You can track their moods on a calendar and also I think you can almost sense it

dameofdilemma · 05/09/2022 15:20

I was 12.

Dd was 9. Average height and weight (nowhere near 7 stone). But she had definitely hit puberty before she started (body hair, breasts/curves etc).

She has a very different body shape to a lot of her friends. She basically looks like a petite young woman (at age 10).

Agree with another poster, it isn't ideal to be the only one in the class and the only one of her friends. She's 10 and having to remember to take sanpro everywhere etc.

But apparently GP said 9-10 is not unusual at all now and teacher said they expect to have a few in Yr6 start.

So is there a rule of thumb that x months after breasts begin to grow properly girl have their first period?

Believerinbiology · 06/09/2022 09:35

Am I the only one who can't remember? I'm pretty sure I'd left primary but no idea what age I started. Hate being asked in medical appointments as I have to say somewhere between 12 and 16.

EspeciallyDivided · 06/09/2022 15:07

I don't think I've ever been asked in a medical appointment.

Average is around 2 years between the onset of puberty (breast buds) and menarche. Breast buds come first, then vaginal discharge, then pubic and underarm hair, then periods.

I don't think I've ever been asked in a medical appointment.

I have several times, in connection with gyne problems. Date of menarche, date of LMP, average length of cycle, average length of period are all routinely asked.

fallfallfall · 06/09/2022 15:40

Both relatively late, about 16. I hope the same for the grandchildren.

PaperMonster · 15/09/2022 14:29

I was 11. My dd is 11 and has just started. Both medium build, but pretty sure she’s taller than I was at 11.

wingingit33 · 16/09/2022 20:47

I was 11y6m, dd1 was 10y8m. She's 12y4m now, 5'6 and 6.5 stone so I can't concur with the weight thing. She's always been a bean pole.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 16/09/2022 21:16

I was 10. DD is 12 (just) and hasn’t started yet. She’s tiny, I was much heavier and a bit taller by the time I was her age.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 18/09/2022 21:25

I was just 12, DD was 9. I was shorter than DD and probably weighed less as a result of that but the weight thing hasn't ring true for us. She is 5,5 and 7 stone so very slim.

Violinist64 · 18/09/2022 21:43

My mother was 10, in the early fifties, and my grandmother, as was very common then, had told her nothing about it. She thought she was bleeding to death, poor thing. She made sure l knew about it but I was 14 when I started. My daughter was thirteen and probably around six stones, if that, at the time as she has always been a petite build.

CC1991 · 24/09/2022 20:27

I was 10 and 6 months. Being one of the oldest in my year meant it happened in the spring term of Year 5 and I felt like I was the 'only one' (although I didn't know that for sure)! I knew what was happening but I hadn't been prepared for it in any practical sense. I had to pretty much 'figure things out' as I went along, as I didn't get enough practical advice for coping at school etc. The first year or so was a very stressful time!

Helenloveslee4eva · 24/09/2022 20:29

I think I was 11 or 12 ?
both daughters exactly the same age in the school holiday between primary and secondary despite one having apparently “ precocious puberty according to the medics 😂.

MidnightAnnie · 24/09/2022 20:31

I was 12, all three of my daughters were earlier.

GetItOffYourChest · 24/09/2022 20:36

Mine was the month after I turned 13 and my daughter started when she was 14 and a half

ILookAtTheFloor · 27/09/2022 10:51

I was 13.5 exactly! As in, it was my half birthday 😂 I remember it vividly. My eldest DD is now 11 (12 in January) and I suspect it's a while off, certainly no signs of puberty yet. She's far more slight and athletic compared to how I was. Both my mum and sister started at 15.

I'll be interested to see how it plays out, for her sake I hope it's not for ages yet!

Fireandflames666 · 09/10/2022 16:46

I was sixteen, my daughter is just about to turn eleven and hasn't started yet.

PeopleWillAlwaysNeedPlates · 13/10/2022 22:57

Average is around 2 years between the onset of puberty (breast buds) and menarche. Breast buds come first, then vaginal discharge, then pubic and underarm hair, then periods.

I’ve started a separate thread but in the hope this will be seen by more people - v tall 9yo DD has red spotting in her knickers today but she has no breast buds or hair and I think this might be a indication that this isn’t menarche yet. Does that chime with others’ knowledge / experience, please?

TowerblocksAndSunflowers · 13/10/2022 22:59

12y8m for me
12y11m for DD

Sunnytwobridges · 13/10/2022 23:49

I was 17 and my DD had just turned 18. but we both physically started puberty pretty young - breasts and pubic hair really young like around 10/11 or so.

XelaM · 15/10/2022 12:16

12 - both for me and for my daughter
