When did you/your DD start periods?

I was 13 and DD is now nearly 13, but not started yet, though she’s needed a bra for a couple of years and is already as tall as me. She’s still very slim though (unlike her mother!). I guess it won’t be long until she starts and I feel a bit as if I’m on standby.

How old were you in comparison with your DDs?

Arenanewbie · 04/09/2022 20:39

I was 13, DD was almost 12, she was smaller then me and slimmer but not very thin.

Chakraleaf · 04/09/2022 20:41

I was 14.

Dd1 was 13

Titsflyingsouth · 04/09/2022 20:44

A week after my 13th birthday.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/09/2022 20:46

Last month, 10.10
5'4", slim but not skinny, size 7/8 feet

OopsTooLate · 04/09/2022 20:49

I, and my two Dds, were all 11.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 04/09/2022 20:50

Me: 15 and 2 months
DD1: 13 and 5 months
DD2: not yet started. Is nearly 12 and has been developing physically for a year or so, she's 5ft 5 tall but only 6.5 stone so very slender. Moody as all hell, so I'm guessing it won't be long.

HelenaJustina · 04/09/2022 20:52

I was 14.5. DC1 was 13.3 DC2 was 11.1 suspect DC3 will be more like DC1 than 2.

rubysparkles1 · 04/09/2022 20:53

@GenericDietCola I was 11 years old and in Year 6. If your Dd is underweight then this can cause primary amenorrhea and delay aspects of puberty. I am naturally borderline underweight/healthy (bmi 18 which is normal for my ethnicity) and have my periods. However, I know that women can lose their periods (secondary amenorrhea) if they lose too much weight.

I think most of my friends were 13 when they got their period. I know someone who never started their period whilst at secondary school. No idea if she ever got it. She was very underweight and didn’t eat much.

My mum was 12, I was 14 and a half - I was a much slimmer build than my mum though, and had undiagnosed coeliac disease. I started signs of puberty at 10 so felt like I was waiting for ages

Did you have any symptoms that you can remember before you were diagnosed?

JustBkind · 04/09/2022 20:56

I don’t think it has anything to do with weight. My DD1 started just after her twelfth birthday and started puberty at 8 years old, very slim. My dd2 hasn’t started yet and she’s now 12 and overweight at 10.5 stone and minimal signs of puberty. I was 14 and around 9.5 stone at the time. It all depends on the individual and THEIR BODY! There is no right or wrong in this and no scientific calculated facts! If there was, we would be superior in our knowledge of peri/ menopause!! (Which we are soooooo not)!

Daydreamsinsantafe · 04/09/2022 20:56

Puberty and race are linked. What is common amongst one race is early or late for another.
I was 10 and my DD 8.9 but not uncommon for black girls.

VieniVieni · 04/09/2022 21:01

I was 12 and 4 month, DD is 13 and no sign yet. She hasn't had a big growth spurt yet, much to her dismay, but has started developing. Not sure if it is in any way linked to breast growth but mine started growing when I was 11 and I got my period a year and a bit after.

crowdedout · 04/09/2022 21:05

I was 12 and a couple of months. My daughter was 12 and a half. She was extremely slim until puberty when she literally gained overnight. Now just a slim size 8 at 14 though.

BackT · 04/09/2022 21:05

I was 13 I think. DD also 13 1/2. She is taller and slimmer than me but we did both get hair a good few years before starting.

Niece was 9 and had extremely heavy periods. Not fun for her.

RuthW · 04/09/2022 21:06

Me 11
Dd 12

abblie · 04/09/2022 21:08

10 🙈

ohyeahiwaittablestoo · 04/09/2022 21:08

I was a few days shy of my 13th birthday. My mum was 11, and her mum was 10. Interesting to read the links to weight. I imagine I was getting close to 7st at that point. Would be surprised if either of my mum or granny were at 10 and 11 though. I'd had pubic hair and boobs for a good 2 years before I got my period and felt like I was waiting a long time.

Couldnothappenlater · 04/09/2022 21:10

I was 12, DD 11.

Her friend, who is taller, very very slim and showed no signs of puberty starting at 10.
I don't believe that weight is a deciding factor in when periods start.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 21:10

just 12
in all cases

Framboisery · 04/09/2022 21:11

For me a month before I was 13.
Both dds were a few months younger, ie 12 and 3 months, 12 and 5 months.

I have read that its a weight thing.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 21:12

pretty sure is connected, i am sure i just heard it the other day.
being seriously underweight can halt your periods

Passthecake30 · 04/09/2022 21:16

I was 13, dd 11.5. I was much skinnier than her, and taller.

Hibye23289 · 04/09/2022 21:19

I was 12, almost 13. I heard bigger girls started earlier so me being young and desperate to start my period started trying to eat more, I was less than 7 stone when I would have started.

My dd is 11 and growing small boobs but no period yet. I have also read that once your period starts your breasts won't grow as much after that, hence why I had small boobs as I started my period quite early!

Depends on bmi and genetics rather than weight. It’s strange that women mention being at least 7 stone when that looks different on different people depending on how tall they are. It makes sense it’s bmi related because women who lose or gain too much weight end up skipping periods.

I read somewhere (a long time ago and no source so not exactly scientific!) that a girl had to be approx 7 and a half stones to start her periods. Was true for me - I was 15 and very skinny! And as a PP said, periods can stop if weight drops below that later in life for what ever reason. Don't think I'll ever have that problem 😂

Things like that can only be a rough guide - I weighed less than that when both my daughters were conceived so my periods definitely didn't stop!
