Prepping For Pandemic..... 11

Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

I should add. For all my attempts to calm others down. I am extremely worried - for myself, DP, family, friends, wider society.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 16:58

Agreed @NatoPMT I find it very worrying. There have always been people on the breadline but the last ten years has pushed many more people into that bracket and people are very, very angry.
I’m going to do everything I can to help my local community, in a bid to do something.

My friend is a grief counsellor and has kindly spoken to her local non denominational church to offer free counselling to people who will no doubt need it this year.

I have made up some bundles of wool and knitting needles from my stash plus have recorded some videos of basic stitches. I’m going to deliver the bundles plus send the videos to anyone I know who is isolating.

I have split my sourdough starter, so I can give it to a friend and I’ll try to split it again and feed it next week. Hopefully it can become viral in its own way. Wink

Our nanny lives with us and has asked if her partner can move in too as his hours have been reduced (also a nanny). He is a nice bloke and fully checked, so we will happily allow him to move into our attic space with her. We are now planning to home educate and work shifts, so we are going to ask him to work for us.

bellinisurge · 07/03/2020 16:59

@Sunshinesky1981 , I've read others on here doing it.
I was worried about fumes or adverse reactions.

MeadowHay · 07/03/2020 17:00

DH went to the shops earlier and there was no toilet roll, no handsan, and no paracetamol. I actually feel really sorry for people who might just be out doing their usual normal family shop and are running low on loo roll and there isn't any to buy. Not sure what they are gonna do? There is still loads of tissues around though, I would have thought that would be next on people's lists if there's no loo roll.

I'm really not sure about civil unrest tbh. Not that I'm qualified to comment but I feel that illness is very different kettle of fish to other political situations like Brexit or austerity or racial discrimination etc.

If there's no loo roll for us customers, what about businesses and public spaces? Are their supplies not affected as they're not all panic buying? I have soooo many questions about all this hah

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 17:03

Thank goodness for people like you kittenheels

My door is open to my pregnant close friend, my best friend and her family + my MIL

I’m going to visit an elderly neighbour tonight and ask her if there’s anything I can help her with. Everyone on our street fb group is young and professional, the elderly neighbours don’t do social media

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 17:03

There’s loads of loo roll here. Andrex is even on special offer reduced from £2.50 to £2 and there’s still shelves of it. Though I’ve heard the local Asda has sold out of it completely.

AlohaMolly · 07/03/2020 17:06

I fully believe there will be civil unrest over this. This country is a tinder box ready for a spark and I suspected brexit would do it but people not being able to buy food, regardless of whether it’s because of panic buyers or not, is going to start something. Imagine, once mass deaths start or people get ill in their thousands and there aren’t enough beds? I feel deep down it’s going to get very dark, very quick, and Boris has nailed his colours to the mast in terms of saying basically, there’s no police to help.

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 17:07

Quick question that I'm hoping someone could help me with. We have some hand sanitizer at home but it is only 50% alcohol. Just wondering if I could add surgical spirit , which is 95 % if i could bring the al8level up to 70%. Just trying to work the measurements per 100

My maths is a bit crap so I can only work it out of the surgical spirit was 100%. If it was 100% then a 50/50 mix would give you alcohol content of 75%. So I’d go for that. It’s 95% not 100% so it’ll be a bit less than 75% but I don’t think under 70%. It’ll be quite watery though? And probably smell bad?

Sunshinesky1981 · 07/03/2020 17:08

@bellinisurge I'm not too worried. We use surgical spirit in our first aid kit anyway and you can put on it skin safely. Might just mix it with the banana boat aloe vera gel we have , as it is easier to work out the percentages

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 17:08

This is so important.
I run our local Facebook page for our wider area but I might see if I can do one for our couple of streets which is a bit of a weird isolated enclave/annex in the middle of a built up area.

Italy reports 1,247 new cases of coronavirus and 36 new deaths, raising total to 5,883 cases and 233 dead t.co/eUoE2b20hL

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 17:08

I really hope you are right @MeadowHay but this isn’t political unrest, it’s potentially food rioting. People don’t have stores or even money to buy stores

The government have lied about providing food and been called out on their lying by the supermarkets who’ve said a) Hancock hasn’t liaised with them and b) the food industry can’t do what Hancock is claiming

Then the next day (yesterday) PHE announced we should be stockpiling after all

The government have said the nhs can cope

Health experts have said that’s a lie

Then the government admitted they can’t treat everyone and said treatment will be prioritised to those who might survive

Your elderly relatives could be dying at home with no bed or nurse to visit

This is a powder keg

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 17:10

Italy's numbers are absolutely insane. The thought that we are on the same trajectory makes me so scared

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 17:11

YES @AlohaMolly

@BanKittenHeels - are you north / south / east or west London?

sideorderofchips · 07/03/2020 17:12

And yet people are saying not to panic buy that it's just flu

NatoPMT · 07/03/2020 17:13

I wonder if we can arrange any community action / help via NextDoor

MinesaPinotPlease · 07/03/2020 17:20

@mybrainhurtsalot

Thanks for the graphic. Am going to send it to my student son and suggest he shares it with his housemates.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 17:20

Whilst also checking in on our elderly neighbours. Why do I keep pressing “post” too soon!

I would suggest taking a photo with you and all of the people in your household and keeping it as the wallpaper to your phone. Keep all of their NHS numbers stored, along with names and DOBs of anyone important to you. Consider using the Apple Health app or equivalent too. Make sure you have all of your medications, allergies noted down along with your height and weight. Oh and the name of your GP surgery is always useful too.

If you have a functioning landline that you don’t use, dig out your old phone from the loft and plug it in. Especially useful are phones that don’t require a separate electricity plug. Keep a list of essential phone numbers taped to the underside.

If you have pets, write out what they eat (inc where it can be purchased)/how much they eat/how often. Write down the name of any medications they are on - including flea and worming treatments (one of my dogs gets very ill if he has the wrong one). Include the name and number of their vet and also the locations of poo bags, leads/harnesses/coats and treats.
Blue tack to the fridge.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 17:21

Nato I was in E. London but I’m in Greater Manchester now.

Legoandloldolls · 07/03/2020 17:23

Ok.so now I'm scared. Within in a week no loo roll, pasta or hand soap on the shelves.

Thank fuck I prepped. Even though I have loo roll, I feel rising panic.

Good news is that post war baby mother is also well stocked! Most of other beloved family and friends are financially ok, healthy and intelligent so they will be able to ride this out. I have one friend who genuinely lives on the line. She is someoone I will keep a close eye on.

Worried about my mums elderly neighbour. However she has family, they seem to do fuck all for her. They will have too now I guess? She is 80 miles away!

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 17:30

If anyone is worried about elderly relatives, can I suggest you write your name phone number in bold letters on the fridge, or get them to do so. Include details of any pets they have in the house, along with medical conditions and medications.

magicrainbowbeans · 07/03/2020 17:37

I still have colleagues planning to travel to northern Italy for annual leave this coming week, and return to the UK the week after that. So far noone stopping them and nothing to stop them coming straight back into their job on return.

BanKittenHeels · 07/03/2020 17:44

Do you have a union you can seek legal advice through?

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 07/03/2020 17:44

I'm getting increasingly annoyed that people who haven't prepped but could've, now have the arse with anyone who has stuff in. Ffs it's been in the news since mid Jan. You didn't have to leave it until the last minute to make sure you had the essentials in.

That doesn't apply to people who aren't in a position to prep.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 07/03/2020 17:45

Next will be whining about how I'll they are, not having curved their lifestyle in any way.
