2019 Brexit Preps

I thought it would be useful to have a thread as we head into the new year where we can discuss our Brexit preps.

Today I picked up all gift wrap and cards I will need for next Christmas which I would normally do anyway but I added some neutral gift wrap which could be used for birthdays. I also stashed a few toys in the sale which can be used for birthdays. The thought of the DC going without birthday presents is too sad.

I’ve also just stashed some lightbulbs, candles, lights and matches.

Going into 2019 I’m focusing on:
Solar chargers
Camping gas
Protein
Medicines
Box hair dye
Skincare
Loo roll and tissues + hankies
Cleaning products
Home brew kits
Books on self reliance

Glad to have a few weeks of stuff in but will keep stocking up - need to get the loo roll in!

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 15/01/2019 20:46

How do we think this vote will impact prepping?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/01/2019 21:03

well, it takes us closer to either revoke or no deal.
I'm looking at my spreadsheet tomorrow.

ElyElyOy · 15/01/2019 21:07

They are going to put it to another vote though aren’t they.

I suspect (and this has probably been the plan all along, or at least a good back up plan) that they knew this would get rejected. PM then comes out and says “one last chance or ND Brexit will happen” a few thousand Russian social media profiles will start spreading food shortage fear on FB/Twitter and Government will issue advice about stocking up. The constituents will get tectchy, maybe a few scuffles over 2-4-1 dairylea (dated 2020, obvs) and maybe even a bruised face of a WW1 veteran (wearing medals, again obvs) who lost said Dairylea to a Romanian/Turk/Afghan (obvs) and then the MPs will be forced by societal pressure to accept deal because “this is just a taster of what is to come if we ND or no Brexit”. I’m sure that tool Robinson will be spouting too (forgetting to mention his criminal record, the fake name, or the fact he’s a total spineless scum bag).

So yeah, happy days Confused

cloudtree · 15/01/2019 21:41

This just means more uncertainty for longer doesn’t it. So more reason to prep imo.

HalloumiGus · 16/01/2019 00:09

I think word is spreading about prepping generally so I think clued in people will quietly be stockpiling stuff without saying too much to the people around them. I've mentioned to a couple of friends but quite light hearted e.g. might buy a few tins of beans. They said they would do the same. They might not get as carried away as me though!

Need to look at mouseproofing. DH left the back window open tonight, have visions of bloody rodents slithering in under cover of darkness and raiding my stash! It's a bit too open at the minute - those plastic under bed storage containers but no lids to even slow them down.

HalloumiGus · 16/01/2019 00:12

I also ordered some led lanterns including a new wind up one - we broke the handle off the last one. Also got some water purifying tablets which were cheap and cheerful. They are overkill but handy for camping if we get stuck. I also bought 20 litres of water which will be useful for camping or if we have any frozen pipes etc - dates to late 2020.

AdoraBell · 16/01/2019 00:24

We used to have a plug in gadget to prevent rodents. Bought it from B&Q about 20 years ago. Emits a high pitched noise they can’t tolerate but interferes with things like burglar alarms that are wireless. You must be able to find something like that on the internet.

BrackLurk · 17/01/2019 13:41

Just wanted to say thank you to @BelliniSurge @ElyElyOy and @AvocadosBeforeMortgages.

Lurking on this and other threads, your advice has been helpful. I'm feeling marginally more confident now, even if my partner thinks I'm mad.

bellinisurge · 17/01/2019 13:44

You're welcome @BrackLurk

ElyElyOy · 17/01/2019 15:32

Ah my pleasure @BrackLurk glad you are feeling better about it all Smile

How are we all getting on Brexit preppers?
This week I’m focusing on stocking up on non-food items like hygiene products, batteries, light bulbs etc.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 22/01/2019 18:05

Interesting test run today.
Usual short notice/sick child/work issues that I am guessing everyone has had in one form or another at some point in their lives. With the added soupçon of unexpected heavy snow. This has now melted but it was a bit dodgy for a bit.
Having some stuff in to eat, soothe and entertain helped a lot. I'm guessing, again, most people pretty much do this kind of thing in their own way anyway without being a prepper. Doesn't hurt to have a buffer of stuff for this sort of situation.

BadlyAgedMemes · 22/01/2019 19:42

I think I'm doing fine right now. Enough stuff on my shelves to last us a comfortable fortnight and a boring few more weeks after that. I'll be adding to it a little bit with every proper shop we do.

OTC medication box has been "completed" to my current standards. I always keep an extra of hygiene and household products anyway, but I'm in the process of getting an "extra extra" right now, so that I'll have one in the "to use" cupboards, and another back up in my storage shelves. No huge stockpiling, but might come in handy one day.

I cleared out the freezer a few days ago of all the old half-used bags of veg and others things that had seen their best days (why did I have several ancient bags of sprouts, when we only eat sprouts at Christmas, and then it's usually from fresh?!). I've now filled one drawer with veg-rich ragu, and will get some dairy and fish in there when I can.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2019 22:04

I had to break into my brexit oxo cubes tonight. Back on the shopping list!

And my cats have fleas. At this time of year. grrr.

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/01/2019 00:18

I am clearing out the food cupboard to make room for food that is actually in date. It is all on the worksurfaces at the moment. I gave up at about 11 tonight.

We have enough dried beans and lentils to feed a fecking army, that is before I have started stocking up. I have issues from childhood, which also include not eating the last of something...so lots of out of date crap needs to be thrown out.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/01/2019 08:46

Something we all ought to remember is that we will be going into spring. We might not feel like winter type foods which appears to be what I've been putting aside
So with beans and things I'm now thinking about bean salads, pasta salads etc. I'm going to pop a couple of nice vinegars on my shopping list and some balsamic (don't you dare copy that lurking journos) vinegar.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 23/01/2019 09:38

V good point OYBBK. I’m adding more tinned beans that can go in salads and more dressings that will store. More jars of grilled peppers and artichokes.

RegularShowRules · 23/01/2019 19:30

Can someone give me an idea which tinned beans can go cold in salads?.
I never eat tinned beans but looking for inspiration and to vary so we are not just having beans or pasta every day after Brexit!

bellinisurge · 23/01/2019 19:32

Chick peas? To be honest, if you like them you can buy dried ones, soak them and cook them.
Don't forget that chick pea water in tins or from cooking as above is the vegan equivalent of egg white.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 23/01/2019 19:39

Look for 5 bean salad in tins section.

londonloves · 23/01/2019 21:20

I finished the baby and health stock today and am very happy about it! I know I've got everything he needs now for at least a month (except his fave snacks and puddings which I'm going to get soon, and some extra nappies).
Unexpectedly got some extra cash today from my mum, going to try and persuade my husband to let me spend it on further supplies. Am feeling really anxious about no deal and riots etc in London (fuck off daily mail) and I think if I had everything ticked off my list I'd feel better.

torthecatlady · 23/01/2019 21:24

Did anyone else get an email from Niamh (mnhq press team) about the prepping /brexit survey that was here a little while ago asking if anyone would give an interview (potentially anonymous)?
