2019 Brexit Preps

I thought it would be useful to have a thread as we head into the new year where we can discuss our Brexit preps.

Today I picked up all gift wrap and cards I will need for next Christmas which I would normally do anyway but I added some neutral gift wrap which could be used for birthdays. I also stashed a few toys in the sale which can be used for birthdays. The thought of the DC going without birthday presents is too sad.

I’ve also just stashed some lightbulbs, candles, lights and matches.

Going into 2019 I’m focusing on:
Solar chargers
Camping gas
Protein
Medicines
Box hair dye
Skincare
Loo roll and tissues + hankies
Cleaning products
Home brew kits
Books on self reliance

I have plenty of jam jars, I’ll look into oxygen absorbers - are there any specific ones your recommend?

I just got the cheapest/highest review ones on Amazon. I'm that sophisticated in my choices Grin

Whatsnewwithyou · 30/12/2018 19:53

Remembered today an important item for my stockpile that I'd overlooked previously- suncream. I wear spf30 every day to prevent skin cancer (I've had a precancer removed from my face previously). I figure anything I can do to avoid needing the nhs, which is likely to be even more oversubscribed after brexit, is worth doing.

That’ll do for me! Going to order some tonight and actually use my dehydrator rather than leaving it sitting in the cellar.

Glad you’ve remembered! I hope you can find some decent deals.

I thought this may be useful (I also have the tin can cook on order!)

Hold fast, everyone. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Aneira11 · 01/01/2019 05:14

@ElyElyOy - that’s a really helpful link, thank you!

Out of interest, how many cans of each item are you stockpiling?

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 01/01/2019 13:18

Jack’s list is very sensible sounding.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 01/01/2019 13:20

When do we think other people are going start panicking and joining in?
Surely there will be a few weeks before Brexit where people start stockpiling?

OP posts:
Aneira11 · 01/01/2019 13:29

Stockpiling I saw just for Christmas and NYE festivities at my local supermarket (crazy parking/queues at tills/empty shelves) makes me think I need to get everything sorted by end of January

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 01/01/2019 13:52

This is how I’m starting to feel.
I nipped in for bread yesterday and it was manic in Tesco, I dread to think what it will be like in coming months. Especially if the government send out an advisory to have food stocks in the house.

Being honest my “stockpile” is pretty pathetic!

I’m aiming for a month of food, and 3 months of products: although I have a years worth of sanitary towels, I have endo and bleed a lot so always bulk-buy when they are on offer! I’m virtually there but aim to get the last few bits in the next few weeks: and then from then on it will be a case of maintaining my supplies.

I have quite bland tastes though so I know I will be happy living on pasta and sauce every day. Also I am prepared to reduce what I actually use if necessary: I already water down cartons of orange (for taste purposes) and use probably half the amount of coffee they say is average to things last me longer than they would other people.

I’ve been a prepper for years anyway (for finance/practical purposes) and I’m not really doing any extra special Brexit-Preps as such, just trying to get big jobs done now that I would probably have otherwise left until the summer.

tibni · 01/01/2019 20:28

I've kept 'spares' since having a ds with disabilities which at times made getting out for supplies difficult. Knowing that it might become more problematic sourcing favoured products is motivating me to get prepared.
Currently trying to declutter so I can utilise my storage space and build my stock a little.
Current contract due to end March, good chance it will not be extended so extras now will make life cheaper generally.
We have 2 allotments so if I get more time I might be able to be more productive down there. Trying to decide if it would be a good idea to get another freezer - stock reasons but also batch cooking to help with time and hope to lose some weight

HalloumiGus · 02/01/2019 21:20

Checking in! I did my second official shop today - bought a catering pack of coffee / tea / vinegar / veg stock / walnuts plus 3kg of rice and 6kg of spaghetti. Also got dishwashing stuff. Whole lot came to nearly sixty quid but all stuff we will be using. I've been doing a kitchen audit and clear out and we have about 3 boxes of tins mainly lentils chickpeas and beans plus several bags of dried. So now I want to concentrate on some meat things to buy.

I'm also going to start eating my way through freezer food and some short date stuff that's been taking up space to a) save money in Jan and b) clear space for longer date stock.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 02/01/2019 22:43

Popped to the shop for some school cooking ingredients for DC this evening and also came out with 5 bread mixes (I can make my own but figure these can be handy), a bottle of vegetable oil, 8 tins of tuna, 2kg caster sugar and BOGOF £1 toothpaste.

I’ve just blagged some old food safe plastic tubs with lids from the local chippy for free.
They store 25L, so could come in very useful.

Can I ask how much flour people are looking to stock? It isn’t the most shelf stable product but damn useful. I always have about 5kg of strong white, SR and plain because we are a big family and I make a lot of bread and things like pies, pastry and cakes. But I’d like to safety store substantially more.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 03/01/2019 18:48

I don't have enough strong white flour. If you use it a lot , I'd look at getting a bit more but there is only so much you can store. We are only 3 although my MIL makes lovely flat bread. I'm kind of relying on her for that.

cloudtree · 03/01/2019 19:26

I have eight 1.5kg bags of strong white. Doesn't feel like much. Difficult to know when we don't know how long any problems might last.

cloudtree · 03/01/2019 19:27

Allison strong white bread flour is currently half price in tesco.

BrexitDestruction · 03/01/2019 19:31

I think there's a govt consumer website that's due to go live in mid January? Also, the vote unless they push it back again. I'm kind of working on everyone panicking around that time and starting to stockpile.

BrexitDestruction · 03/01/2019 19:33

^ govt consumer website telling people how to prepare for No Deal, I mean.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 03/01/2019 19:35

I think I’m going to buy double every time
I go and just bake extra rolls and pies to fill up the chest freezer (never 100% relying on freezing).

Great to know about the Allinsons cloudtree.

Brexit it is just that info that I think will trigger lots of panic, so I want to be ahead of it.

I've just been to Lidl and stocked up on packet rice and toilet roll. I really don't feel confident I have enough to feed us even for a short break in supplies due to snow, let alone Brexit, but at least it is something.

We've been trying out long life milk too. Moo tastes pretty good, but a bit expensive. Will try other supermarket own brands.

StoorieHoose · 03/01/2019 19:40

I’m attempted soda bread this week but will need to get in some bread mixes too. I’m hopeless with flour and yeast in my bread maker but bread mixes at least provide some half edible loaves

BrexitDestruction · 03/01/2019 19:41

Same for me Ova. Can't actually believe I'm even thinking this way. Ffs.

I've also bought some physical maps, I know people will laugh at me thinking GPS and mobile data could be sketchy though.

I need to pick up some plastic containers in the Jan sales too as we have bloody mice appearing in the kitchen.
