2019 Brexit Preps

I thought it would be useful to have a thread as we head into the new year where we can discuss our Brexit preps.

Today I picked up all gift wrap and cards I will need for next Christmas which I would normally do anyway but I added some neutral gift wrap which could be used for birthdays. I also stashed a few toys in the sale which can be used for birthdays. The thought of the DC going without birthday presents is too sad.

I’ve also just stashed some lightbulbs, candles, lights and matches.

Going into 2019 I’m focusing on:
Solar chargers
Camping gas
Protein
Medicines
Box hair dye
Skincare
Loo roll and tissues + hankies
Cleaning products
Home brew kits
Books on self reliance

Ooh thanks for the tios about Tesco. I'll have a look. And thanks for the tip about eggs, too.

It occuto me that to fill in the "hungry gap" time of year when there is very little fresh food available, bean & seed sprouts are a good alternative. So I've stocked up a bit - I already had a couple of packs of seeds, but I've ordered more, & more variety. Looking at what's available, it seems that it's better to buy single variety packs, rather than mixes, as some seeds & beans need very different soaking times, & are ready much more quickly than others.

OMG I've just my previous post back again. Apologies for the typos. Migraine.

FedUpOfBrexit · 23/02/2019 12:51

Lollypop were the reduced items together on a special aisle or just on ordinary places they would be?

TheFlis12345 · 23/02/2019 14:07

I think a woman in Tesco earlier just may have been prepping..... I had noticed the 25p spaghetti shelf was empty and then found it was because a lady had emptied the entire thing into her trolley. I spotted her as she was doing the same thing with the 15p bars of soap! The only other things she had were a loaf of bread and bag of kiwi fruit. I thought it was a bit selfish to not even leave a couple of each behind as someone on a low budget may have been relying on being get the lowest price items.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2019 14:15

Sounds like either catering purchase or panic buying to me @TheFlis12345 . Catering purchase is just buying for eg a care home or childminder/nursery.
Panic buying could have been avoided if they had started earlier as recommended and done it sensibly and in a budget friendly way.
Unless there is actual rationing, people are free to buy what they want when they want.

Lollypop27 · 23/02/2019 15:01

Some of the offers were on the shelf where they usually are but had a reduced to clear sticker. The washing powder was in a big cage by the tills.

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 26/02/2019 17:52

I haven’t been back to this thread for a while because I haven’t been well. I have however in that time managed to stock and organise much more and get to work turning our conservatory in to a garden room. We have lots of seedlings coming along nicely already.

Spreading the bad news cloud?

Makes grim reading. I read it as there are likely to be issues with fresh food imports.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2019 07:29

The assessment takes the usual style of these assessments - understated.

Cloudtree · 27/02/2019 08:19

Good advice here though to help avoid any problems
Problem solved

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 10:08

Oh crap, OYBBK. I need to read that paragraph again and try to understand it more.

Today is top up shop and tomorrow is restock after half term shop. Plus shop for the weekend shop.

If there is no deal in march, fresh stuff shortages,

Is it likely that there will be a vote banning no deal in march? If so, is a delay likely?

Are there expected to be problems with supplies if the wa goes through?

And are we expecting price rises whatever? (Given that they are going up already)

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 10:10

Sorry I'll kids and not sleeping well for two nights has turned my brain to off when it comes to thinking things through.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2019 10:16

My limited understanding is that if we get WA there should be no change in the short term other than prices continuing to drift up. (in part to pay for all of the stockpiling and costs of uncertainty that have happened so far)

I expect there will be a short delay. IF the Eu agree to it. They may say there is absolutely no point to a short delay. Then we are kind of stuffed because the votes go in order of:
Meaningful vote
No deal vote (utterly meaningless)
Delay Brexit til June if May gets her way.
At that point the EU will go WTF and with two weeks to go at that point tell us a short delay is pointless.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 23:21

helpful reply but it does not seem a very helpful series of votes.

Ruling out no deal is good in theory but that requires them to actively do something else. Which is not likely as they seem to decide on what they don't want but not on what they do want.

In other words, we still might get no deal by accident if they don't actually do anything.

SparklySneakers · 02/03/2019 19:52

My head torches have just arrived. I was inspired by @bellinisurge I think it was with the milk bottle lantern. They were £5 each complete with batteries off amazon and handy to have regardless of brexit. I had a petzl one at uni but don't know where it went. Probably in the loft somewhere.

bellinisurge · 02/03/2019 21:35

👍

BlackeyedGruesome · 03/03/2019 22:18

lucky you, well done for being organised.

must get organised and put an order in.

StyleOfTheTimes · 06/09/2019 22:03

The only thing we’ve really “stockpiled” is baby formula. The dates are really long, mid 2020. I was thinking we should look at getting some bottled water and perhaps some tinned foods. We already grow a lot of our own veg with plans to expand next spring.

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/09/2019 09:58

Ooo what veg do you grow. Sounds exciting.

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/09/2019 21:04

I did finally put that order in. I now have a storm kettle. Hoping to take it to the beach next year. All being well. -crosses fingers-- I have also replaced my beloved 25+ year old flask. I hope the new one lasts as long. Added an additional food flask. I need to get ex to read me the box as it is in German.

Next Thing to organise is a bread maker.
