2019 Brexit Preps

I thought it would be useful to have a thread as we head into the new year where we can discuss our Brexit preps.

Today I picked up all gift wrap and cards I will need for next Christmas which I would normally do anyway but I added some neutral gift wrap which could be used for birthdays. I also stashed a few toys in the sale which can be used for birthdays. The thought of the DC going without birthday presents is too sad.

I’ve also just stashed some lightbulbs, candles, lights and matches.

Going into 2019 I’m focusing on:
Solar chargers
Camping gas
Protein
Medicines
Box hair dye
Skincare
Loo roll and tissues + hankies
Cleaning products
Home brew kits
Books on self reliance

I could do SingleDad, I expect shes quite stringy, being rather old.

SingleDadReally · 24/01/2019 01:16

OVAgroundWOMBLIN-if you think there’s going to be power cuts what’s the point in having loads of light bulbs? (note to mods-just asking politely).

bellinisurge · 24/01/2019 05:47

@SingleDadReally - don't expect power cuts from Brexit unless you live in NI where it is a possibility.
Spare light bulbs are generally a good idea and frankly, if it's all kicking off at the shops because some people didn't bother to do some sensible proportionate pantry stocking, who would want to pop in to get a light bulb.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 07:27

SingleDad, me thinks you are here to create mischief.

TheElementsSong · 24/01/2019 08:55

Oh dear, was somebody a naughty boy?

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/01/2019 18:32

Surely you are nearly ready to shout house element.

I hate those pesky bits and bobs that do not stack easily. and stuff that is just past bb, or nearly bb.

I am still sorting out the bloody cupboard. I have not been shopping today as
a) I am still sorting the bloody cupboard,
b) mum is in hospital and I have spent a lot of time working out whether I need to take the children up to see her.
c) still sorting that bloody cupboard. (have i mentioned that at all yet?)

OYBBK I have a stash of balsamic vinegar I did not know I had. (6 bottles)

you can get five beans in flavoured erm, stuff instesad of water that would be good in salads. I sprinkle on seeds as well to give some crunch and some of those missing micronutrients.

and I have discovered I have run out of chick peas, I have got through a couple of 2 kg bags recently and not replaced.

I have a stash of things under the stairs that were for christmas. my stash of pringles will be going under there as they are less accessible and they will last longer then the weekend.. I adore pringles and the result is visible around the middle... Blush

Boring alert: My list of stuff to buy: dried fruit. pumpkin seeds. chick peas, dried and tinned. more tinned fruit, nuts, (cos I am) lots and lots of tinned tomatoes, jam. they eat lots of jam. soy sauce, ground pepper

londonloves · 24/01/2019 19:02

Does anyone know if you can still buy those amazing chocolate sponge puddings that used to come in a tin? Made by Cadbury's I think. None in Asda today!

bellinisurge · 24/01/2019 19:38

@londonloves , I bought some when passing through Waitrose on a jaunt. However my dd spotted them as I was packing them away and begged for one when she was poorly. I thought I'd road test them with her. Delicious she said.
I couldn't be arsed making custard from my stash of custard powder because a) I am horrible b) I am lazy and c) she doesn't know i have it - I hate custard but others in the house love it.
It was made by Aunty's Kitchen it something- based in NZ apparently so we can live off those when we get a brilliant trade deal with them. Hate to think of the air miles Blush

londonloves · 24/01/2019 19:40

Ace, I will check it out, thank you.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 19:46

do waitrose really have those tinned puddings? I love those and I've been looking for them for ages.

cloudtree · 24/01/2019 19:51

Heinz discontinued the cadburys tinned sponge pudding 3 years ago Sad. I have some stashed along with some simpsons golden syrup ones which are available sometimes in home bargains.

They're all those plastic pot ones now.

cloudtree · 24/01/2019 19:54

Just checked and morrisons stock the Simpsons chocolate tinned pudding.

ElyElyOy · 24/01/2019 19:55

I was going to say I’m sure I’ve seen tinned puddings in Home Bargains, but not the Cadbury’s ones.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 19:56

trip to morrison's then!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/01/2019 19:56

no home bargains round here :(

londonloves · 24/01/2019 20:08

I bought some Asda plastic pot chocolate ones to try, will report back...!

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 24/01/2019 21:30

Yawn at the goader.

Today I tried some of the onions I pickled in the autumn and they were delicious. I have 18 large jars full, so I think our house will be rather farty. 😂

Bellinisurge-initially I was having a bit of a laugh but I now think we should have a serious rational conversation about it. Firstly, I don’t understand why anyone thinks there will be shortages. Actually, they’re more likely to be not able to get British goods in Europe, if British exports are held up in customs checks. Only if the government decided to reciprocate would our imports be affected. For sure the balance of payments of the UK would deteriorate, but probably no worse than in the 1960’s or 70’s before North Sea oil. This would probably depress the value of the pound to the point that our exports were competitive in Europe even with some tariffs on them. Therefore the concept that we’re going to end up in a siege economy is vanishingly unlikely. The only possible argument for “prepping” is the depreciation of the pound increasing prices of imported goods, but everybody rushing to the shops to buy everything in sight will be just as inflationary.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/01/2019 22:31

natural gasOVA Grin I was given a jar of pickled onions by a friend I am looking forward to opening it and trying them.

my cupboard is being sorted and repacked. I have quite a lot of stuff already but some massive gaps of missing things.

I have started buying htings we have used in the past, namely tinned fruit and tinned sweetcorn and peas. We used to take them on holiday for the first meal of the stay until I started using packs of frozen peas and sweetcorn as ice packs around the milk in a cool bag. I shall buy three meals worth to tide us over.

we do have a home bargains, but walking home from there with a rucksack full is not comfortable. I have to do a run into town to buy a few things from there.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/01/2019 22:36

we have needed the store cupboard when children have been ill, and for every school holiday so that we only need ex to bring milk and bread and limited amount of food and I do not need to take autistic children to the shops, which causes them great distress.

my mum is old and in hospital . there is not the time to shop etc when we are doing trips up to see her, fil died recently and we needed the stores we had as things were difficult.

I have a condition that means sometimes I am too tired to do a big shop and manage on the stuff we have in and the convenience shop.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/01/2019 22:41

oh and I have childrne who will only eat one sort of weetbiscuits, or a certain types of meals because of their disabilities.

dd was ill with a cold recently, I could not go shopping with her while she was off school, then ds caught it and more days not going shopping with him. Throw in a couple of medical appointments that take up the whole day (or enough of it to prevent a trip to the shops) and you can end up with two weeks of not being able to shop and living off the freezer, store cupboard and fridge.

cloudtree · 24/01/2019 23:07

Gosh there’s an annoying buzz in here too Confused

falcon5 · 24/01/2019 23:13

Ooh. Honestly the tinned sponge pudding thing - such an opportunity for them.again. bellinisurge - I also got the waitrose ones but new Zealand, plastic pots and also sorbitol not just sugar. Online looking found all the Heinz ones discontinued but morrisons do Simpson's. Which I find are produced by a factory in Yorkshire in lots of flavours! Because I'm really wanting the golden syrup ones now. Has anyone eaten the proper Simpson tinned ones... are they as good as the old ones.or am I about to taste disappointment?

cloudtree · 24/01/2019 23:16

I’ve had the Simpsons golden syrup. Not quite as good as the old Heinz ones imo but very similar.

£1 in Morrisons

falcon5 · 24/01/2019 23:41

Oh good I'll be getting those in. Now trying to not crave them and go to sleep !
