2019 Brexit Preps

I thought it would be useful to have a thread as we head into the new year where we can discuss our Brexit preps.

Today I picked up all gift wrap and cards I will need for next Christmas which I would normally do anyway but I added some neutral gift wrap which could be used for birthdays. I also stashed a few toys in the sale which can be used for birthdays. The thought of the DC going without birthday presents is too sad.

I’ve also just stashed some lightbulbs, candles, lights and matches.

Going into 2019 I’m focusing on:
Solar chargers
Camping gas
Protein
Medicines
Box hair dye
Skincare
Loo roll and tissues + hankies
Cleaning products
Home brew kits
Books on self reliance

I’ve been experimenting with freezing eggs and can say they are perfectly fine when defrosted. Poached, scrambled and in baking. Not great fried though. I crack them in to silicons muffins tins. Then once frozen put in to plastic bags. Haven’t used dried eggs though.

Eggs last a long time in the fridge.
Months past their best before date.
I made toad in the hole the other night with eggs with a date on them of last Oct so that is 4 months past the stamped on date.
There are another half a dozen with that date on which are still in the fridge for the next time I use eggs.
No, if you are an egg connoisseur they do not taste as fresh as if you eat them the day the chicken laid them.
But they do taste just fine even if you fry them & involve no faffing about freezing/drying/etc....
You might not want to leave them quite that long (they were a rogue lost in the back of the fridge pack so we've been eating newer eggs in between), but a month or two is nothing to an egg in the fridge.

Another big advantage?
They cost the same as every normal egg you currently buy, rather than the high prices of dehydrated egg & if the power goes out they will sit just fine in your fridge unlike the ones in the freezer which will defrost then need to be binned if you can't eat them fast enough.

Unless you are prepping for the serious long haul, why not just buy a pack of eggs & stick them in your fridge?

Yes eggs do last for months in the fridge if they haven’t been washed. I heard that in the uk our farmers don’t do that as it take off a natural protective covering. But I’m the USA they do as a lot of their chickens are factory farmed so get poop on the shells.

This is a good point re shelf life, maybe I will just buy a couple of dozen at the end of March and put them at the back of the fridge. I haven't got much freezer space but may experiment with freezing! Thanks folks.
Just done a freezer inventory - completely rammed at the moment, planning just to keep it as a full as possible!

DD has found her supply of food under her bed. I will tell her to keep it secret from her friends and neighbours. It is the most obvious place to look though. Never mind. We can only make the best of what we have got.

HAs anyone else seen the Birdseye foodprice warning today? I think that may well push more people to start preparing

londonloves · 18/02/2019 20:53

Haven't been watching the news much the last few weeks as it was making me so anxious but feels like the noise has died down a bit, expecting it to start building again soon.

BlackeyedGruesome · 18/02/2019 23:48

no wolfcub. children keep turning the radio off as brexit is boring.

contemplating how much protein the children and I need. answer, an awful lot of beans and whole grains if there is not milk about. my stash of beans is now looking incredibly pathetic really. we do eat a lot of beans and lentils. ds drinks gallons of milk.

Laura, you need to obtain permission from mumsnet and go through the proper media channels for this.

redhat · 21/02/2019 10:58

I think you will struggle to find anyone Laura who is willing to talk about it on tv unless their anonymity is preserved somehow. Otherwise everyone will know they have food put away...

Most of us are not part of any "prepping community" either. We are just normal people who can see problems ahead of us.

bellinisurge · 21/02/2019 11:24

Laura, I am an actual prepper and I wouldn't dream of talking to you and putting my head above the parapet.

MotherWol · 21/02/2019 15:48

Did I miss something? Why was my post deleted?

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 19:43

Ask mnhq

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/02/2019 11:57

Grr getting distracted. Just moving food about the flat. Sharing out the different types.

Lollypop27 · 22/02/2019 12:17

Just a heads up. My local Tesco is having a massive sale on loads of things that are changing packaging.

Bin bags were reduced to 20p a pack, tins of custard 3p, Persil massive boxes (80 washes?) £3, Tesco value water 2p. Loads more that I can’t remember.

Cloudtree · 22/02/2019 16:14

I love it when they do that at Tesco. A couple of years ago I ended up with 80 cartons of orange juice stacked in the garage since they were changing the packaging and they were all 7p!

BlackeyedGruesome · 23/02/2019 07:24

Jammy!

Everything is on hold here to account for half term and kids going away.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2019 08:49

I never seem to see sales at supermarkets. I dunno how I'm doing it wrong.

Cloudtree · 23/02/2019 09:04

At my Tesco they don’t publicise it at all. If you happen to be intending to purchase that product you’ll look at the price and just notice it’s crazily low. Then you pounce! Grin
