smoking in pregnancy

An acquaintence(close friend of a friend) is six months pregnant, and has not managed to stop smoking ( about ten a day I think)
I don't smoke (used to smoke the odd one or two but stopped when I realised I was starting to enjoy it).

I appreciate it must be hard to give up but can it really be THAT hard? I struggle to be positive about this person at the best of times. Actually I think she is a silly little so and so. Am I being a bit harsh to think shre is being stupid and selfish? Not that I am perfect but I would never have done anythign to harm my babies in the womb.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about him!

ShaysMummy · 14/01/2006 23:49

Everyone will probably hate me for saying this but I smoked for 8 years from the age of 14 (which apparently is the worse kind of age to start for getting addicted) right up till the day I did my pregnancy test and discovered I was pregnant. I will admit, I then lit up as the result sunk in, but have not touched one since. My son is now 6 months and I am pregnant again, due in Sept. The thought of a tiny life inside me, being poisoned, was enough to stop me smoking. I had to stop and that was that.....
Waiting for hate messages to appear! lol

lovecloud · 15/01/2006 22:45

I hate it when i read or hear comments like...

"my mum smoked 15 fags a day and gave birth to five healthy children"

is that supposed to be good???

how could any person be selfish enough to take the risk?

we know whatever goes in our mouths goes to our growing child so i dony know how anyone can live with themselves inhaling toxic fumes and thinking the baby will be ok because lots are!!!

if there is anything that i could do to ensure my child is born healthy than i would do it.

we know smoking is bad for you full stop so it is bad for your child and not stopping is a form of child abuse and i think it should be illegal.

if you choose to smoke then that is your choice but you should stop whilst pregnant - where is the childs choice in it all???

i have no respect for women who smoke in pregnancy and for mothers who continue to smoke over a childs pram walking down the street or in their homes.

i was a smoker and i chose to stop, it was hard but luckily i stopped a few years before i fell pregnant. it took my partner longer but he was not smoking when i was pregnant or after.

it is possible to stop. there are no excuses!

flutterbee · 15/01/2006 22:51

OH FGS I thought this one was dead and buried but, by the looks of it 'tigerwoman' or shall we just call her selfishmothers to avoid confusion, has to come on yet again and start the thread all over.

Please don't be idiots and take this person for real and lovecloud I respect your opinion but if you want to make a serious point on smoking I would start a new thread because I am unable to take this one seriously after the he/she from hell bought it back from the archives last week.

colditz · 15/01/2006 22:52

I hate it when people decide that because they found it easy to do something, everyone else will too, so they don't need and shouldn't get support, just condemnation if they don't do the thing that one person found easy.

Because you can never know a person's level of addiction or reliance on a drug, you can only know your own.
It's like saying "I lost weight because I didn't want to be a fat mother, therefore all fat mothers should lose weight, and I think it should be illegal to be a fat mother. I wasn't, so nobody else should be."

lovecloud · 15/01/2006 22:56

colditz - smoking is not heroin

lovecloud · 15/01/2006 23:00

but its effect can be similar, giving birth to a child born with an addiction.

newborns of smokers have withdrawl symptoms.

i am not saying because i did, im great, so every woman can...

every woman can give up smoking, they are not going to bloody die from the withdrawl of nicotine.

if they cant give up then something is seriously wrong and that would be worrying!

lovecloud · 15/01/2006 23:04

i see this thread was from a long time ago but its still valid.

flutterbee · 15/01/2006 23:06

It became unvalid in my opinion after selfishmothers started posting on it a week ago, if you have time just go back and read what she wrote and then you will understand.

KarenGilfoyle · 10/08/2006 14:42

I cannot understand the problem with women smoking when pregnant.

I?m 18 and have one son, I smoked all the way through my pregnancy with no problems whatsoever, he was 8lb exactly so a normal weight. I am now pregnant with my second child (6 months) and smoking maybe 15 a day, 20 when I?m really stressed!

I?ve had the usual rubbish from my doctor and midwife about how smoking does harm to babies, but where is the evidence? All my friends (6) smoked when they were pregnant and had healthy babies, also my mum smoked with me and I?m fine.
It really annoys me when people judge you for smoking when they do not know the facts. What about pollution from traffic? I?ve had the usual from busy bodies when I?m out shopping and stop for a fag ?You know that smoking will harm your baby?

The way I see it is why should I stop smoking because I?m pregnant? I enjoy smoking, it calms my nerves! Every woman I know more or less smoked when they were carrying and had healthy babies.

And before anyone says it NO I don?t feel guilty because smoking does not harm your baby I am living proof of that. They blame every illness now on smoking, my friends gran never smoked in her life and got lung cancer.

emzickle · 10/08/2006 15:35

I used to smoke, when I found out I was pregnant I smoked maybe 4 more cigarettes (that was more to help the shock) then quit completely. I would love to light up - mmm... but NO there really is no point, I felt so much better in myself after giving up - my hair smelt better, my sence of smell was better, I now really love being a non smoker, not that I preech, my DH still smokes the odd ciggy at the pub, but the evidence does point towards ciggarettes causing SERIOUS fetal problems, I am not going to risk that - just for a few puffs on a smoke now and then.

titchy77 · 10/08/2006 17:31

I smoked 20a day before finding out i was pregnant, then quit which i'm still finding very hard (13wks pregnant) but i dont want to risk it. smoked while pregnant with ds and he was a good weight but had a missed m/c last year and smoked while pregnant then (about 5 aday) and have always blamed myself for it so just don't want to take that risk again.

GaribaldiCusack · 10/08/2006 17:36

KarenGilfoyle, are you for real?

So sorry you only have 6 friends BTW

1Baby1Bump · 10/08/2006 17:41

cant believe there is another thread about this!

parperty, parp, parp, parp!!

GaribaldiCusack · 10/08/2006 17:44

oh I thought it was the other one
now see it's one resurrected by a first time poster talking total crap

I should have let it lie!

KarenGilfoyle · 10/08/2006 20:27

Garibaldi, Why do you have to be nasty about how many friends I've got? I was talking about my very closest friends.

I knew people would have to judge me for smoking. I dont drink I dont take drugs the one pleasure I've got and people have to go on all stupid. I think the real issue here is the women that have stopped smoking are jealous because they are dying for a cigarette and are denying themselves one! The odd fag wont hurt! I smoked 15 or more a day and my son is perfect.

kerry26 · 08/09/2006 17:18

i smoke i am 35 weeks it is up to the indivial if u wanna smoke who are you ppl on here to judge its are baby and r lives i dont drink and neva taken drugs so these ppl that jugde other ppl get a life and the person that made the comment on her friends what the hell has it got to do with u that was so rude i wouldnt smoke around a new born baby i will go outside in the garden an smoke

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 08/09/2006 17:20

Whats the difference between smoking around a new born baby and smoking when pregnant then Kerry?

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 08/09/2006 17:21

blah blah blah - "I did it so it's fine"........READ THE BL**DY EVIDENCE THERE'S PLENTY ABOUT - and it's all conclusive - smoking in pregnancy not only harms your baby but harms YOU.

If you're so selfish that you don't even want to try to quit (or at least cut down drastically) while pregnant God help your children

And this is coming from a SMOKER!

kerry26 · 08/09/2006 17:25

what the f* has it got to do with u ? its my choice i smoke 10 fags last me a week so walkng pass some in the street would u tell them to put there fag out? shoppin? u sad lonley ppl

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 08/09/2006 17:25

did your unborn baby also ask to smoke 10 cigarettes a day??

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 08/09/2006 17:26

oh and you're lying if you say you never take drugs.

Nicotine is a drug - that's actually more additive that some illegal ones........

southeastastra · 08/09/2006 17:26

take a chill pill, read the thread and let it lie

CarolinaMoon · 08/09/2006 17:29

bit difficult to get away from the baby to smoke when it's in your womb though surely?

Smoking is v bad for unborn babies, end of. Why do it? (haven't read the whole thread, but I realise this point may have been made already )

kerry26 · 08/09/2006 17:30
