Had my second attempt at a 12 week scan/combined screening earlier this week. The awkward little sod wouldn't stay still in the right place long enough for the midwife to get the NT measurements.
As it was my second 12 week scan (the first I was at 11w+1d, a bit too early for the screening), it means I can't get the combined screening done at all. The midwife did say that from what she could see, the NT measurements would have been normal, it was just she couldn't get a clear enough still picture for the screening. She also said that typically she'd be able to see if anything was untoward and that everything looked perfectly normal and healthy.
I've been offered the quad test at my 16week midwife appointment, but that only screens for downs, not Edwards or Pataus. The midwife did also say that Edwards and Pataus will be checked for at the 20 week anomaly scan.
Having thought long and hard about it, I decided to get a private NIPT done. I have a few risk factors (older FTM at 36yrs, and high BMI), and I don't think I could wait 6 weeks to find out. It's not just that I'm impatient, it's more that waiting for the 20 week scan would give little time to make any difficult decisions if anything was wrong, and I'd rather know earlier than later.
So now I'm waiting for the test kit to arrive. Blood gets drawn next week and I should have the results back by the end of August.
I know that despite my risk factors, the overwhelming likelihood is that everything is fine (and the midwife at the scan was very confident and reassuring). But it's still the unknown that's bothering me and it's taken a bit off the shine off what has otherwise been a fairly exciting time so far. (I didn't even get a good look at my baby on the scan as the patient's screen was broken, so I only had a skewed view of the midwife's smaller screen. That bummed me out a bit too :( )
