Hi all I’m so new to this.
im 43 and fell pregnant after trying for 3 months, this will be my 3rd. (2 teenagers)
I tested faint positive on 3rd just, the tests got very dark this week.
took myself off for a early internal scan yesterday as I have had brown discharge and some period like cramping and scared to hell of ectopic.
I was told there is a sac in the right place but no yolk or fetus. My sac measured 10mm which they said was 5 week.
im still having sore boobies, the worst back pain and sickness/headaches has just started yesterday.
really just after some reassurance as this 10 day wait is going to be so painful.
thanks in advance 💜💙

It could just be too early. I was advised to wait till atleast week 7 for early scan as everything is just getting going. It will be a tough wait but hopefully you'll get to see more.

Unfortunately I have had a blighted ovum also which is when you see an empty sac but it was further along.

sending positive thoughts 🤗

Hello!

I did so much research on this as my first scan I measured 10mm too, I thought I was 7 weeks but they measured it as “less than 6” no visible fetal pole etc. I went back a week later to a private place, it had grown to 18mm but no visible fetal pole either. I then had my 2 week scan yesterday and it measured 22mm but was diagnosed with blighted ovum. I also went to the EPU with some pink discharge when wiping.

My story is not reassuring however, there are thousands and thousands of stories I found online where it was just too early. Are your dates matching up to 5 weeks? The EPU were not overly concerned at my first scan, and said it’s literally 50/50! I am praying you have a good outcome, 5 weeks (if matching your dates) you wouldn’t be able to see a thing anyway!!!! So there is hope ❤️Having the sac in the right place is also reassuring. X

Hi, I’m not sure about my dates as my last period was 9th June but I may have ovulated on day 17 :/
it’s all such a head fizz isn’t it.
move woke up this morning to my boobies feeling incredibly sore again (they wasn’t as sore yest)
did you guys have symptoms?
I havnt had pink discharge yet, just the odd bit of brown spotting here and there. I have had some pulling feelings and period like cramps.
you are 100% right about it being in right place as that was a massive worry for me. 💜
thank you so much, I need to think realistically and not get my hopes up. 🩷💙

I still have morning sickness and sore boobs. I have opted for a D&C on Wednesday as it’s not moving itself along and i am sick of feeling rubbish when I know the ending 🙄.

There are many stories of people not seeing a fetal pole until 6/7 weeks, so remain hopeful! Pulling/cramping can also be quite usual in early pregnancy. I kept myself sane waiting for my scan by reading positive stories… Although I appreciate I am far from a positive 🤔. I don’t know whether it was more of a hindrance seeing so much positive and then hearing negative, maybe a balance would have been better??? Hope you have a positive outcome xxxxx

No no thank you. You are 100% right I do need a balance. 💙💜
oh god I’m so sorry 🥺 I’m sending you lots of love. But yeah it’s very very hard getting symptoms still and not knowing …. Or in your case knowing nothing will come of it.
did you have any cramps or signs of a empty sac?
what did the hospital say?
I hope you will get your rainbow baby very very soon! I’m sure you will 💙💜

So my story is…
I had one episode of very very light pink spotting when I wiped. I freaked out and rang the gp. She got me seen by EPU the next day (I actually felt an idiot because I had no more spotting) I ovulated in CD22, so I knew my dates would be a week behind. She had me as 7+4, I knew I would be about 6+4ish.
they scanned, said they could only see a gestational sac, said it’s very normal not to see anything at this stage. I asked repeatedly for my hcg levels to be checked (I’d had a previous miscarriage 10 years ago and they routinely did this) she said no as it “won’t change the outcome”. they booked me in for 2 weeks time.

we already had a private scan booked so thought there was no harm in attending. We went, again nothing was seen on abdominal or transvaginal, said the sac measured 18mm. She didn’t confirm viability but I went away and researched and read a medical journal that said 18mm no recognisable features is ALWAYS a “failed pregnancy”. So we knew, we prepared ourselves.

Then yesterday I went for my follow up scan. gestational sac grown 3 or 4mm in 5 days. Still empty. I was offered natural, medical or surgical. I’m a community nurse so opted for surgical management as I could plan time off accordingly.
I haven’t had any pain throughout this experience. And no other episodes of bleeding. I was reassured constantly that sometimes spotting happens! And I even read of people having more significant bleeds and having perfectly healthy pregnancies x

Thank you. I haven't had pink spotting but I have had cramps.
I also was going to book a private scan if only just to pre prepare ourselves for the final outcome. I imagine it did make it slightly easier to digest? 🥺
yes I too will go for the surgical for the same reason.
no they didn’t take my blood either I did ask also. As I see people on here all the time comparing numbers lol.
thank you for your story, I will be thinking of you Wednesday and please come back to me and let me know how you are getting on. 💙💜 xxx

Thankyou honey, I will be thinking of you too xxxx

glasspaw · 21/07/2023 14:40

I can’t offer advice but thought I’d drop in to say that I’m in a similar position to you. I was seen at EPU for some cramping (to rule out ectopic) and GS measured @ 11mm. I thought I was 5w 6 days but was told 11mm would indicate I’m a few days behind where my dates were showing (which I think is accurate as I know I ovulate a few days late).

no pole or heartbeat, but was told it was still early and I’d need a follow up in a few weeks. I have this in a few days when I will be 7+5 (but based on OV I suspect it’s closer to 7+1/2). I’m crossing everything that they are able to confirm viability but trying to prepare myself emotionally for either outcome.

it’s been a long wait, and I’m extremely nauseous too which isn’t really helping because I feel so pregnant.

sending you best wishes, it’s a weird situation when you know you wouldn’t (under normal circumstances) have had a scan so early anyway and therefore you wouldn’t actually have any more information at this point than you do now, but somehow it’s so much worse to have had a scan and not had proper assurance that everything is ok!

Wen19 · 21/07/2023 14:53

@glasspaw aw it sounds like a mirror of me right now! I went for a scan for the same reason. I really wish I hadn’t.
did they see a yolk? Mine didn’t have one :/
when is your next scan?
im really hoping you see a little heartbeat 💙💜 please stay in touch let me know how you get on.
I feel pregnant too, I’m so bloated and boobies feel like massive fireballs, I have sickness at 4:30pm every day 😂 and I’m having vivid dreams and extreme tiredness.

Sorry to say I had similar in December and about ten days after the scan my brown discharge turned to pink, then blood, and eventually I lost the pregnancy.

I found comfort in the fact that losses this early mean it was never going to be viable, and also the nurses telling me that following the first period post miscarriage I would have a very thick womb lining for a new pregnancy. I ended up conceiving again at the end of January and am now six months along, so if you do end up with a loss then the silver lining is at least you have a good chance of conceiving again next time.

Wishing you the best OP!

@Clarista aw I’m really sorry for yours 💜 but good news you fell on so soon!! 😃 that’s such a positive outcome I needed to hear 💜
so is it after your first period?

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 21/07/2023 15:06

This has happened twice to me, and it was a different outcome each time. I was offered the blood tests the first time which showed the hcg doubling as it should be.
fingers crossed all is well.

Wen19 · 21/07/2023 15:17

@ThePersistenceOfMammories no bloods were taken at all :/ I havnt had any bloods done since I found out I was pregnant. I keep doing pregnancy tests is that the same? Xx

OP posts:
Ems1992 · 21/07/2023 16:01

I don’t suppose pregnancy tests will give you any indication as I am still having “dye stealers” (super positive test lines)

Yes it was a relief to get pregnant again so fast I must say!

Yes it was after the period- once I had stopped bleeding from the miscarriage, I then had a slightly heavier than normal bleed for my next pregnancy. The way this was explained to me was that since you are shedding two womb linings (period and miscarriage) the period is heavier and leaves your new womb lining smooth, spongy and very thick for a new egg to attach. This then makes it easier to get pregnant following a loss. So if that is happening to you then at least there’s the silver lining of a high chance at a new pregnancy.

Wen19 · 21/07/2023 16:10

@Ems1992 😱 I assumed they’d get lighter. Glad I asked now. I don’t need any false hope. 💙 xxx

@Clarista yes that’s really helpful thank you. I already feel better after speaking to you ladies on here and hearing your story’s.
i am 43 so my clock is ticking so so fast. 🫠
my other half is being really positive and he is certain all is well and I’ve just cocked up on my dates.
im having period like cramps today. Nothing else though. Just feels like a period is coming then I feel wetness and go see and there’s nothing to see xxxx

OP posts:
Clarista · 21/07/2023 17:47

I would prepare yourself mentally for the loss and start planning for your next ovulation instead of holding out hope. I did this and it made it a lot easier when I did start bleeding as I was expecting it. Like you I lost early- around 6 weeks- and by the time it happened I just had a sensation that it wasn’t meant to be instead of the devastation I felt at first.

I also got cramping and have never had that with my periods.

Wen19 · 22/07/2023 04:36

Hello, update (partial)
I have woke up at 3am to go for a wee and I have back pain and cramps. And the darkest brown discharge. If I hadn’t seen the empty sac on screen I’d be worried sick now of ectopic. My lower tummy feels like it’s bubbling and I have terrible gas.
the cramps feel like a period is coming. It got quite bad last night then some brown came out and it eased off :/

Wen19 · 22/07/2023 15:34

Hi just another update (I’m doing these updates hopefully to help someone exactly like me who has spent hours searching for answers)
the cramps have subsided, there is still a small amount of dark brown sticky discharge on wiping.
the cramps got quite bad early this morning but when I went to the toilet and and some brown period like discharge (no clots) came out it eased. Almost like a pressure had been relieved. :/
not going to bother EPU unless the blood turns red and even then I’m not sure they can even do anything to help.
I’ll keep updating I really hope this helps someone x

Need to add here,
I still have
very sore boobs
metallic taste in mouth
nausea here and there
and a dark positive test about a hour ago

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 22/07/2023 16:23

I wish you all the best op but please bear in mind that you can have an ectopic pregnancy with a visible intrauterine sac. It isn't a true sac, rather an empty pseudogestational sac.

The dark brown discharge and pain should be monitored closely and if remotely in doubt, seek medical advice.

Chunkychips23 · 22/07/2023 16:49

I had a private scan at 5+2, with an empty gestational sac measuring at 4+6. Went back at 8 weeks and there was a foetus growing there. The sac weeks before was just a black empty blob on the screen prior to that. I had an early scan as I was having very painful cramping and back pain. I thought I was having an ectopic it was that severe.

On the other hand, my only other pregnancy, that was a blighted ovum with an empty gestational sac at 7 weeks. With that one, you could clearly see there was something off with it. The sac was irregular and measuring ahead of where I should have been at that gestation. I was having milder pregnancy symptoms at that point which was why I got an early scan. I didn’t have any bleeding and had regular mild cramping, which can be normal.

I wish you the best and hope it’s a positive outcome x
