I missed loads while I was typing because mumsnet kept glitching!

@destiEos that list from the hospital seems pretty small haha, does mum not need any clothes or knickers?!

@mrkb asda or primark full knickers in a size or 2 up from your normal. They're great. Get black though! I would probably say get the big ones regardless, maternity pads are big so big knickers are useful haha. Breast pads you aren't likely to need until about day 3-5 when the colostrum changes to proper milk I think.

destiEos · 20/04/2022 14:36

@mrkb I just noticed it does actually say hat for going home! Brain is mush.
Also, I got my M&S big pants yesterday and wish I had them ages ago. I love them - they even support my belly a wee bit. I'm wearing these ones right now and everything is happy: 3pk Flexifit™ Modal Full Briefs, also bought the 3pk Sumptuously Soft™ Full Briefs and they're super comfy with a bit of bum-lace, the 5 pack no-VPL and the horrific maternity swimsuit are going back though 😤

destiEos · 20/04/2022 14:41

@Octoblockisadick yeah, I thought that at first and then thought when kiddo is older I think I'd like to celebrate our anniversary the two of us, and his birthday separately. We could do with a bit of romance anyway 😉 Also, bloody good point, apparently naked mum is fine! 🤣

Also find out yesterday that private room post-birth is £600 - nearly had a heart attack.

Right, enough of my nattering! Hope everyone is doing ok today and thinking of you @PeeAche2 - hoping everything turns out well 💕 I'm off to lounge in the garden 🌷

mrkb · 20/04/2022 14:42

@destiEos despite actually looking at the list before replying I had already absorbed your comment on hats and just did not notice it 😅 pregnancy brain at its finest. Yes I love an M&S big brief! Will get to ordering...

@Octoblockisadick thanks for recommendations - good point on the need for black haha. I've noticed my right nipple getting a little bit leaky (which is grossing me out tbh...) so didn't know if I would want breast pads anyway?

A friend said to me yesterday that they were recommended to get properly measured for a bra 2 weeks before EDD as your boobs can suddenly get loads bigger in the run up. Please tell me this isn't true! I've ballooned from an already unwieldy 32E to an unknown size but I've been wearing 34F WITH BRA EXTENDERS - I can't cope with anymore!!

EarlGreywithLemon · 20/04/2022 14:48

@mrkb definitely take hats! Newborns lose lots of heat though their heads so the midwives insisted we had one to hand and put it on her right after she was born, when she was still in a towel. In fact, I'd take two hats, as the first one can get very grubby. Our hospital provided towels - might be worth checking with yours.
For me, I'm packing:

  • thin dressing gown - really useful for going to the bathroom; the hospital gown kept falling open and I couldn't keep myself half decent in it

  • thin nighties - I was too hot in a gown at times

  • slippers

  • flip flops (for grubby showers!)

  • breast pads - my milk actually came in very quickly despite the PPH

  • feeding bras

  • Lansinoh

  • hand moisturiser - I dry out from all the handwashing

  • sports cap water bottle - easy to drink lying down

  • extra pillow

  • breastfeeding cushion - really wished I'd had this the first time

  • loose dress and slip on shoes for going home

  • eye mask

  • ear plugs

I took net knickers the first time, but turns out the hospital provided them. They also provided maternity pads, so worth checking that too. This time I'm taking C section knickers, but I know I'm having an ELCS. Likewise I'm taking windeze for the same reason (trapped wind is meant to be awful after a section).

Flowerbug1994 · 20/04/2022 15:11

@mrkb i bought maternity knickers from Asda a few weeks ago big over bump ones and they are amazing !! I got 10 pairs then ordered 10 more for after delivery to comfy don’t fall down and I think once bump goes down leaves plenty of space for large pads and still enough to cover belly and feel secure. My favourite thing I’ve bought so far 😂😂😂

destiEos · 20/04/2022 17:42

@EarlGreywithLemon I am stealing your list! Thanks 😬

mrkb · 20/04/2022 18:05

Thanks for all the knickers recommendations everyone! And @EarlGreywithLemon that list is perfect! It's all starting to feel very soon now!

Prema112 · 20/04/2022 18:26

Haven't been able to post all day on my phone app, just trying on my laptop to see if it works...

Prema112 · 20/04/2022 18:29

Ooo it worked!

@Roxystar23 @ChildOfFriday I've always felt like baby will be premature but that hasn't spurred me on to get ready early, totally agree with you about being too tired in the evenings after work to do any prep. I'm very pleased with myself that I've washed some newborn clothes, but that's all I've done! I'm 34 weeks today. Going to start trying to order bits and put things in a hospital bag over the next 2 weeks

@PeeAche2 I've been thinking of you, how're you both doing?

Just had my growth scan and baby looking good and is now head down instead of sideways, woop! Although legs are still out to side but she said that doesn't matter

Thanks for all the bag packing advice! Need to start my bag

Vimto1991 · 20/04/2022 19:11

@EarlGreywithLemon I was considering eye mask and ear plugs but worried I’d sleep through my own baby crying 😬 how did you cope?

unknownscot · 20/04/2022 19:38

For those who have got dates to be induced/ section - how many weeks will you be?

RoseValleyRambles · 20/04/2022 20:07

Just swung by Aldi to pick up nappies, and find Bambino mio reusables in the special buys for £3.99!

fpeg · 20/04/2022 20:26

@unknownscot

39 weeks for my induction
Prema112 · 20/04/2022 20:31

For anyone struggling to post on the thread today, logging out and back in seems to have done the trick for me

EarlGreywithLemon · 20/04/2022 20:48

@Vimto1991 maybe my earplugs are not great (just some foam ones from Boots) but the best they manage is to dull down the ambient noise. I’d never sleep through a baby crying with them on. I guess my husband was also there as back up the whole time-which he won’t be this time.

beansprout55 · 20/04/2022 20:56

Echoing Prema - been thinking about you both all day @PeeAche2, hoping and praying you're both doing ok x

NAPPIES Where do I start? In Jersey, so no Tesco, Asda etc.... my best bet is Amazon or boots. Thinking of using reusables but deffo disposables for the first few weeks whilst I learn how to do things (FTM) - What disposables are you getting? Size 0 or Size 1? Not sure how many I should buy initially as Amazon orders take about a week to arrive.

EarlGreywithLemon · 20/04/2022 20:57

@unknownscot they are apparently requesting a C section date for me for 39 weeks.

EarlGreywithLemon · 20/04/2022 20:58

@beansprout55 we got size 1 (but the nappies we used didn’t come in size 0, so that was the smallest). We also used Amazon and Boots.

Vimto1991 · 20/04/2022 21:24

@EarlGreywithLemon ah okay! I have really good ones that are foam but proper fit into your ear. We lived next door to terrible neighbours previously who left their baby crying all night and would have loud music so had to make sure they get rid of all sound, saying that, I still wake up to my alarm (I used them last night due to husband snoring lol), so I’d hope I’d still wake to my own baby crying. We shall see! Maybe I’ll give birth in the day 😅

Lostintranslatio · 20/04/2022 21:26

@beansprout55 I have bought a pack of newborn size nappies (2-5kg) in the hospital bag, and so far I have 3 packs at home on the next size (3-6kg). I have bought them in aldi as I used them when I was a minder and found them pretty good back then.

Vimto1991 · 20/04/2022 21:28

@beansprout55
do you have Aldi or Lidl? I’ve heard really good things about those, Tesco is also really good - do you have any chain supermarkets? Might be worth checking their own brands? I got pampers size 1 from Emma’s diary packs but not heard great things about pampers.

I’ve also been googling eco friendly nappies, as we want to get into reusables around 3 months. The one website I found also did flushable eco friendly nappy wipes, but price for both was quite a lot.

mypura.com

size 1 seems to cover 5lbs to 11lbs so newborn. I think 0 must be preemie size, and this baby is already 4lb 6oz so I’ll start hoarding size 1s 🙈

EarlGreywithLemon · 20/04/2022 21:38

@beansprout55 for quantities, we got though as many as 10-11 nappies a day at the beginning 😱

PeeAche2 · 20/04/2022 22:07

Hi friends. Baby PeeAche born this morning at 32 weeks, via emergency c section. Tests revealed a fetal maternal haemorrhage so it was action stations... that's why she was in distress and then very went quiet.
Weighing 4lbs and 6. She's going to need to be in hospital for 3 weeks-ish but she's otherwise healthy.

I'm very sore and shocked but just happy that my baby is alive.

We're accepting breast milk donations. Didn't know about them before... remarkable. Also, shopping frantically for prem clothes now! 🥲

Thanks everyone.xxx

DaimDillyDoo · 20/04/2022 22:10

Can anyone give me a shake and tell me if I'm being precious? Blush

My parents kindly offered to purchase our travel set for us, I picked a pushchair from an independent shop (which are sadly now closing down). In passing conversation at the weekend, I told my mum that the shop we'd purchased the pram from was shutting down. My mum said she'd collect the pram and keep it at her house until we are ready for it. I said thank you and that was the end of it.

Anyway, got a phone call from my mum today to say that they've been and collected the pram, built it and thrown the box away and it's lovely!! My mum smokes in the house and has a pet puppy! I'm so annoyed. I haven't said anything as I don't want to offend her but she's purchased the baby some lovely outfits, but as she smokes in her bedroom/living room/kitchen, wherever the outfits have been stored have left them smelling of smoke! I just shoved them in the wash the second they came to my house.

  1. I wanted to build the pushchair, take it out it's packaging with DP. 2) I would never just assume I could unwrap someone else's gift out it's box and throw the packaging away. 3) Why didn't they just ask if they could put it together?! I probably would have said "yes, but please put it back in its box" Sad
