Hi everyone.
I noticed our thread was about to fill up, so thought I’d start a new one quick. Hope that’s not too presumptuous of me and have to say thank you to @Sheera1 for starting the thread.

As the title says it’s a discussion thread for any pregnant women who are classed as that bit older for a mum to be.

Copying our list over so we can keep up. If you would like to join please copy and paste the list, adding your own details in date order.

Really hope I’m doing this right! 🙈

@Realladymarmalade and @NaomiB79 where are you both in Scotland? I am Barrhead just South of Glasgow near Paisley.

I am excited about the baby box too. I know people who hate SNP were moaning on about them, but I am excited to get mine. Looks like a room thermometer and a baby temp one which is great as won't need to buy them. The mattress is fab too. It is a while away for me but I think I order it at my midwife appointment next week (22 weeks)?

Midwife appointment 22 weeks, Is that also when I get my MatB1 form? Anything else I need to ask about?

I get all my bargains on facebook marketplace. It has become an obsession tracking what I want and the best deals. I seriously need to stop lol.

I am conflicted over buying baby clothes too. I have a cart full on very but think I am only going fo them as there is a weird shortage. How much has everyone bought? I am conflicted over the newborn size or 0-3 months too. At the moment I have a pack of 3 unisex sleep suits in both sizes. A 5 pack of short sleeve vests in both sizes. And hovering over a grey set in 0-3 months.

Too much, too little? What about long sleeved vests? It will be winter. I honestly can't even remember what to do. Lol. I had loads of hand me downs and sizes from my sister last time as my niece is a handy 9 months older than ds. @Frazzlerock like you my ds was a big boy at 9 pounds 4 and half the stuff didn't fit and he grew so fast.

As I don't know gender it makes it hard to buy anything else really. There is this gorgeous little set of a top trousers bib and hat on very but it is very girlie. I am sure there will be stuff available at the time but panicking as everywhere is sold out.

I also want to get babygros that zip up but they only have them in gender colours so will need to wait.

I still think girl too @frazzled to the point I might be a little disappointed if it is not. I keep trying to picture what I saw and I definitely thought it looked external st the time and therefore boy, but looking at scans the girl bits look external to me and I def thought two balls as if they were sitting on glass and looking underneath ifswim and that looks like the girl bits to me. Arrgh should have just asked but DP doesn't want to know.

Ds came in last night when I was in bed and gave me a cuddle and said "I just love my baby brother or sister so much already". ❤🥰

Sheera1 · 15/07/2020 12:11

Oh and speaking of triggers have you seen the new body form advert? It is all about the trials and glory of having a vagina. There is a bit in it with a lesbian couple and show insemination, then them happy seeing an early scan showing they are pregnant and then a later scan where the faces all fall and the baby has obviously died. I was in bits!

NaomiB79 · 15/07/2020 12:50

@Sheera1 I live in Edinburgh. Not going to get into politics on here but I do think the baby box is a good initiative, especially for families who are struggling financially. Babies are so expensive it makes me wonder how some families afford everything you need to get for them! The thermometers will be great I agree along with lots of other handy things in there.

I had my 22 week midwife appointment yesterday so that is where she gave me the form for the baby box and she also gave me my MAT B1 form.

The clothes sizes are tricky, my friend gave me quite a lot of newborn stuff but if my baby is bigger than 7lb she won't fit in to any if it, so I've about bought 8 vests and sleepsuits in 0-1 month from Next (which I think does them up until about 10lbs) and everything else I bought is 0-3 months also from Next. Different shops seem to be slightly different in sizes. A lot of my friends have recommended Morrison's baby clothes for quality and we have one locally so picked up a few more vests, sleepsuits and baby trousers from there last night. I really struggled to get gender neutral stuff, it is easier now we know we are having a girl x

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 12:55

Just had a consultant appointment at the hospital - pretty pointless and totally forgot to ask for the exemption form 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ that was the one thing I was meant to remember!!!!! I did get my whooping cough vaccination though as the hospital does a walk in clinic for it. Arm aching now!!

NaomiB79 · 15/07/2020 12:56

@onlyreadingneverposting8 I had a dead arm for 3 days after mine!

Frazzlerock · 15/07/2020 13:01

I'm just as confused as you @Sheera1 re baby clothes. I just buy what I can. I have ordered a few bits from M&S yesterday in 1 month size. Got two 5 pack of vests in bright colours, and two 3 packs of babygrows. I've already got some 0-3 stuff coming in the post and can't remember what I've got so will do a little inventory one it all arrives.
I will only dress the baby in babygrows for as log as possible, can't be arsed with proper outfits! I dressed my eldest in proper outfits and they made him look so grown up. I want to keep this one a baby for as long as possible Grin
With you on the zip ups! I need to find some of those, much easier than poppers, why do they use poppers anyway!?

Your DS is soooo cute! I love that.

Yes I saw that advert. My friend shared it on FB a couple of weeks ago. Such a great advert and puts that awful Tampax "gerrum oop there girls" to shame, as if they didn't put themselves there already.
It made me really sob and brought back a lot of memories of all of those scan rooms we've had bad news in. But it is so important to put out there. They've really covered everything haven't they! I haven't seen it on the telly yet, it was very long so I wondered if they might cut it short?

Frazzlerock · 15/07/2020 13:06

@onlyreadingneverposting8 I had my consultant appointment this morning too, but mine was over the phone.

She just said I'd be having my next scan at 28 weeks then 34 weeks when they will book my section date in. She also asked me again about sterilisation, which I have decided against. Not because I want more children, I couldn't imagine anything worse than going through another 4 years of hell to be honest! I'd rather gouge my own ovaries out quite frankly. It just feels a bit final! I will have the coil put in 6 weeks PP instead.
Yes whooping cough was very 'dead arm' like. It didn't hurt at all going in but, like @NaomiB79, I had a dead arm for several days afterwards and couldn't lie on that side.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 13:58

@Frazzlerock doctor has sent a request for scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks for me but said that scan might drop one of those due to covid so suspect I'll end up with 28 and 34 like you. This one was much younger and friendly- I liked her - until I showed her my bad leg (the one with the varicose veins) and she went "oh yes - they are bad aren't they?!"😳🙄🤣🤣

Frazzlerock · 15/07/2020 14:12

@onlyreadingneverposting8 yeah mine did originally say I'd have three more scans but today said it would be dropped to two. Oh well!
I'm seeing the midwife next week who rang this morning and knows my anxieties - she offered to listen to the heartbeat for me, although she had to say it quietly, not sure why!

Oooh are varicose veins due to pregnancy? I know you have to keep an eye on them but don';t know anything else. That was very blunt of her to say that!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 14:17

Varicose veins are largely inherited- my grandad had them and my mum does. They're made worse by pregnancy. My started getting bad in my 6th. Fortunately they don't cause me pain usually - they're just really unsightly!!

Countingblessings · 15/07/2020 16:48

Hi everyone

Aaargh I just typed a long message and thought I'd posted it but it's not there. Annoying!! Will try remember what I said... Grin

I live in Scotland too and looking forward to getting our baby box. I think they're brilliant and will be a great help to us. I'm actually not planning to buy a moses basket this time and see if we can use it as a place for the baby sleep during the day for a bit. I know some folk dont like the idea of that but I'm happy to give it a go! Our moses basket didnt last us any time at all last time so it felt like a waste of money.

Thanks for the heads up about difficulties getting baby clothes. I'm not buying anything until after 20 week scan. If we having a girl then great because we've got loads of stuff from when my DD was little but if it's a boy we're starting from scratch. Im all for bold colours too - everything is beige or gray these days, like these folk on instagram whose houses are all the one colour and immaculate. Jealous of them Grin

I had a midwife call this week. Was pretty pointless actually. I'm not feeling much movement so she reassured me around that but other than that it was are you well, taking your vitamins, here's your next appointment. I'm sure If I'd seen her she would have at least checked my blood pressure or something?!

Got my first consultant call next week and was going to ask you ladies what's likely to be covered? Midwife said just delivery options but can see some of you have had chats about future scans? Anything else likely to be covered? I've never been consultant led before and dreading a call that'll just tell me I'm old and fat (dont need reminded thanks!!). What's your experience of consultant contact been like?

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 17:26

@Countingblessings - my experience of consultants and their underlings....they tell you what's going to happen (don't think they've read the stuff that says they should be getting informed consent and properly explaining why they are suggesting things) Men usually nicer than women. I've met a couple that have been down right awful and had a couple who've been lovely! Personally I wouldn't have high expectations - apologies on how negative that sounds!

Countingblessings · 15/07/2020 17:54

Ah thanks for your honesty @onlyreadingneverposting8. I'd rather know! For some reason I feel a bit intimidated that it's a consultant. I want to have an elective c section (ended up with emergency section last time) and I'm worried I'm going to have to argue my case for it or they'll try and talk me out of it. Keeping my fingers crossed I get one of the nice ones!!

footprintsintheslow · 15/07/2020 18:23

@Countingblessings I'm not bothering with a Moses basket. They'll be going straight in the cot and my first slept in her carry cot bit from the pram.
What do Scottish families do for a mattress to go in their boxes. I love the box idea and wish Wales would do it too.

I'm consultant led and it's fine you get a few extra appointment which mine are now over the phone. However I did talk her into letting me have an extra scan at 17 weeks so she's in my good books.

Right at the end of my last pregnancy she signed me off to give birth on the normal midwife led unit as my thyroid behaved very well throughout.

Countingblessings · 15/07/2020 18:57

Ah good to know @footprintsintheslow, thanks! Does seem to be entirely dependent on who you get. Glad you had a good one!!

There's a mattress included with the baby box as far as I'm aware, and a fitted sheet too. Think the government here copied a Scandinavian model (or similar) so it is actually designed to be used as a bed if parents want. There's also black and white drawings all around the box that can be coloured in. I'm thinking of letting my girl colour it in as something special to do for the baby but will need to see it first.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 19:17

Body of the never ending blanket....DONE!!! Just the edging to do!!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 20:04

Cancel that! Blanket finished - started the edging and isn't like it! Yay!

footprintsintheslow · 15/07/2020 20:15

Photos of blanket please!

I made a quick basket the other night for my two year old to put dinosaurs in or whatever.

Sheera1 · 15/07/2020 20:26

These are awesome. I need to find my knitted cat to give you a laugh.

Whooping cough jag. Stingy and then arm sore for two days. Ouchy.

@Countingblessings my c0nsultant was female. She was nice enough but cold and mentioned my age and weight a million time which left me feeling a bit shit. I think asking for a section when you have had one before will be no bother at all. They seem to want us all induced or sectioned early so that will suit them. Esp as you have had a section they won't be inducing you for risk of rupturing the scar. X

Frazzlerock · 15/07/2020 21:10

@footprintsintheslow that bag is awesome! I love the stitching.

@onlyreadingneverposting8 let's see the finished blanket!
I'm going to finish mine early as it's huge already. So two more stripes to go then the edging and I'm done!
But I keep getting distracted by other little projects like this one I started yesterday.

@Countingblessings I'm consultant led and mine is telling me I will have a section after having two. I think they like offering sections TBH so you won't have any trouble. I'm pretty sure it was an option for me with DS2 before we found out he was breach anyway.

Ahh so many of you getting baby boxes! I love them so much!

footprintsintheslow · 15/07/2020 21:15

I love it @Frazzlerock. What pattern did you use?

Frazzlerock · 15/07/2020 21:22

@footprintsintheslow it's a half double stitch (American) I think it's a half treble in UK terms.
YouTube tutorial is here:

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 21:31

@Frazzlerock I'm going to have a go at that hoodie! I had to buy extra yarn for the blanket and then over ordered so I'll use the same.

@footprintsintheslow I love the bag - the colours are fab!

Picture tomorrow as I'm in bed....tbh it's just like it was only bigger!

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 15/07/2020 21:34

@Sheera1 like last time - my arm is hurting....a lot!! Feels like I've pulled a muscle or been punched really hard...can't even lift it above my head 😳 Glad the clexane doesn't do the same to me!!

Realladymarmalade · 15/07/2020 22:26

Yay for the baby boxes ! Still not opened mine..work is all consuming and my side project (business) is getting busy. I cant complain but I'm fucking shattered. I had predicted neither pandemic nor pregnancy when I registered with companies house (2 weeks before I got knocked up😳😬)
But only 1.5 weeks to go in my day job ! Planning to just get up at 5am again and crack on with admin.

How is everyone else getting on with work?

So Scottish ladies we have sheera barrhead naomi Edinburgh and counting blessings ...?

I'm in Dundee .

Go away with your amazing crafty knitting craft people !

Consultant led for this and last when was 35 due to other issues. Mines have been fab. No pressure to do anything other than what I want. In this case I've requested an induction. No fixation on age. I'm happier to have consultant and extra scans. I like the reassurance of a hospital setting anyway.
