So terrified. Emergency section at 25w

Today I've been admitted to hospital and told my baby will need to be delivered in next 24 hours due to poor growth and almost no waters. Baby is only measuring at 1lb 2oz with a less than 50% chance of survival. My husband and I are devastated and terrified. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Oh my goodness, I've no experience of such a early birth, I've had an ECS but I wish you all the luck. You must be beside yourself Flowers

No I've not been there personally, but I have spent a lot of time in special care unit with a lady who's little girl survived from 24 weeks and months on was doing well.

Sending you lots of strength. I hope your little one is a fighter. Keep posting here.

My niece and nephew were born around 26 weeks ish via emergency c section. They were given similar chances, but they started school in September xx

I haven't personally Titchy but didn't want to read & run. I wish you, your baby and partner all the very best. A couple of my friends have had similar sized babies and yes, they needed a lot of hospital care, but they were perfectly fine when discharged. I hope everything goes the same way for you and your family xxx

My ds was 32 weeks so a lot further on, but nevertheless I spent a good few weeks on SCBU.

There were babies in there who were minute, and every baby in there with ds made it to discharge Smile

The nurses are AMAZING. I called the hospital first thing every morning, as I had to be home overnight with my toddler, and they gave me a full run down of feeds/nappies/any events.

It's worth asking now whether you can have a tour of SCBU. It's less scary if you have seen where you will be spending lots of time. The nurses will be fine with this, and it made the birth a lot calmer as I knew what to expect.

You will be fine. The thought of doing it is worse than the event. Somehow, we just plough on and get through it.

Oh you poor thing. I had an emergency section at 30 weeks which was terrifying but a much better prognosis. We spent a long time in NICU and met a number of 24 and 25 weekers. I'm not going to lie a couple of the little ones didn't make it but two years down the line the others are thriving. It's going to be a hard road ahead for you all but you are in the best possible place and the staff will do all they can to give your LO the best possible care. Have you had the steroid injections to help with lung development? I will be keeping everything crossed that everything goes as smoothly as possible when they decide that the time is right to take you to theatre.

This is a different situation but I read in a comment somewhere that this baby was 1lb 2 (it stuck in my mind). Good luck OP!

I have no experience but I'm wishing you all the best. No parent out there, be they first timers or on their twelfth, would believe they were strong enough to cope in situations like this...but some, hundreds, thousands even, have. I'm wishing all three of you the very, very best Flowers

Big hugs. My youngest was born at 28 weeks and weighed 1lb 12oz. (Two before her were born at 30 and then 32 weeks) she was awfully small, much, much smaller than the others. I had her by c section. When she was born they wrapped her in a clear bag as her skin was so thin and popped her in an incubator. She spent 6 weeks in SCBU and is now a happy healthy 3, almost 4 year old. It's a very scary and uncertain time but your baby will be very well looked after and cared for and you will be kept in the loop every step of the way. Make sure you talk to the staff caring for her, no question or worry is too small. They will look after you both xx

Have they given you the injection of steroids for baby lungs? If not then please ask for it ASAP

I had an emergency c-section at 26wks with twins due to absent EDF in April. My girls were 1lb 11.5oz and 1lb 7oz.

They have Chronic Lung Disease of Prematurity and needed 16 weeks in NICU. They are home on oxygen now and putting weight on nicely.

OP - I found the Bliss website and helpline useful.
Also, please message me if you want to chat about long term NICU stays/micro-preemies etc

Awh bless you. I don't have personal experience but a girl I went to school with had her baby at 23 weeks and a few days and she is now a healthy 1 year old!

Hi Titchy, my DS was born at 29 weeks, due to me having PE. He had stopped growing at 24/25 weeks & weighed 1lb 9oz/720g. I had steroids then EMCS about 48hrs later.

There were a lot of people in the room & he was put in a plastic bag & whisked away to NICU. I didn't get to hold him for about 10 days (I think).

Everything was such a blur & I was very shocked. I never asked about his chances; I was too scared.

He was in NICU for nearly 100 days & came home on oxygen.

I expressed milk for him, which reduced his chances of getting NEC (a nasty bowel condition), using a hospital grade pump.

I got to know some of the other NICU parents very well; we all suppported each other. Most of our babies were born at 24/28 weeks. They are all doing really well now, but it has not been an easy road in NICU.

Thank you all for your kind words. They have said it's 50/50 as to whether baby will make it. It's very surreal. It hasn't really sunk in yet. But they have said baby has a better chance out of womb than in it

My friend gave birth at 27 weeks in similar circs, baby is now thriving, from 2lb to 5lb 6 and hopefully coming home this week at what would have been 35 weeks.

My only experience was a baby born 10 weeks early 30 years ago.
They could do amazing things then so even more so now.
Post through the night if you want I'm often awake and others will be
