I'm a bit nervous about opening this thread as I've only foundt out I'm pregnant and anything can happen...anyway, due date 1st november, I still cant believe it.....
This is my second baby but I'm even more anxious about this pregnancy than first time round...I'd been wantind a 2nd baby for over a yera now, but dh wanted to wait longer, and now it's happened, but it wasn't planned at all!!!

We're both over the moon though, but trying to contain our happyness just in case....(easier said than done)

anyway, I fell better now, having shared this with you..

off to play with dd1 now!!!

Where is Twinkie?? I thought she would have posted to let us know about the scan. Hope all is well Twinkie.

My scan is next Wed and is going to cost us 33euros!!!! Grrrrrrr. £22!!!!

Hope everyone is OK.

PandaBear · 10/05/2004 13:39

Hello All. Just thought I'd post a quick message. I moved house last Friday and spent the weekend unpacking and arranging things. Couple that with juggling an almost 2 year old and an ever growing bump, and I'm shattered!! Other than that though everything seems OK, just looking forward to my first appointment at the antenatal clinic next week. Hope everyone is well.

Twinkie · 10/05/2004 14:53

Hi all,

Hope you are all ok and thanks for being concerned and asking about me.

Bad news to a degree I am afraid - I think I must have done something really bad in a past life to get all this heaped on me - anyway went for the scan and DP was impressed little baby kicking its legs and moving far more than DD ever did - anyway it was lovely until she measured the back of his neck and I knew immediatley that something was wrong - it looked really really thick and her face said it all - I had told her that I had all this last time and she looked so sorry for me!!

Anyway we are going forour CVS tomorrow, after lots of soul searching we have decided that as the risk of miscarriage is more than the risk of there being something wrong it is a good idea - hopefully Prof Nicolades will work his magic and everything will be ok. Although I am sure it will be alright I don't think I can stand the next 6 months not knowing.

Fingers crossed for me please

PandaBear · 10/05/2004 16:17

Twinkie . Fingers crossed everything is OK and let us know how you get on!

Twinkie, good luck, we're all rooting for you.

Plantpot, hi. Good to have another one on this board.

Hopefully I'll still be here tomorrow after my scan.

Bronze · 11/05/2004 16:42

Hi people,
Glad you're all ok. I am still the same as usual ie sick and extremely knackered and no hint of a bump (and I'm getting spots not happy). I do finally have my scan date though which is the 21st which to me seems quite late as I'll be 13 1/2 weeks by then, thought the norm was 10 to 12 weeks oh well nevermind.
I do read all your posts regularly but as to whether ds1 lets me reply or not is another matter
keep well

Hi twinkie - i just wanted to pop in to let you know that this happened to a friend of Dp's. They were told the skin on the back of the neck was thick as well, and had the test. But all was fine, and their DD is now a beautiful 4 months old. Didn't stop them going through hell though too, will keep my fingers crossed for you. xxx

jellycat · 11/05/2004 22:22

Twinkie - hope everything went OK today.

Hello plantpot!

I have a scan date at last - next Thursday. I'll be 13 weeks by then. Bronze, the letter from my hospital came with a leaflet saying they scan at 12-14 weeks so maybe that's what your hospital do too. Glad you say you haven't got a bump yet, I was beginning to worry a bit as I feel a bit chubbier but no bump as such. I know I'll hate it when I get one though, but I just want the reassurance of a pregnant-looking tummy. Ho hum!

bunny2 · 12/05/2004 11:52

My nuchal scan is similar to Twinkie's. The baby has a 2.6 mm nuchal fold which gives me a 1 in 44 chance of Downs. Twinkie, talk to me!!! I dont know what to do. I am so shocked and upset.

Twinkie · 12/05/2004 11:55

Honey have you been offered CVs or anything??

Please do not fret too much I had a one in 25 with DD and she is now a perfcet pretty 3.5 year old - I did actually ask the lady who was doing the CVS last night whether it was a case that I may just have babies with fat necks (my father has a fat neck and so does DP!!) she laughed and said yes that may be the case!!

Talk to me what have they said - where do you live, where will you be referred to??

Mum2Ela · 12/05/2004 12:01

God, its such a worrying time. Sending sooo many hugs to you bunny2 and Twinkie.

Bunny - you must be in turmoil.

bunny2 · 12/05/2004 12:09

M2E, thank you.

Twinkie, I've been offered a cvs on Monday, the risk of mc is 3%. That is too high, I have had 2 miscarriages and fertility drugs to get this far, I cant risk losing this one too. DId you take a long time to decide on a cvs or was it something you knew you would do?

webmum · 12/05/2004 12:23

bunny, twinkie

did you only have a nuchal scan or was it combined with a blood test?
My nu8chal result was 2.7, but when combined with the blood test the chances of a genetic disorder had gone down to 1/1700 instead of about 1/400 which was the age relate risk.

The sonographer did not recommend CVS or Amnio, so I decided not to have them, but only have the ecocardiac scan. It's a difficult choice isn't it?
AT the end of the day these tests don't tell you much, it could be one in a million and you'd be that one.
I know someone who was supposed to be low risk and had a d/s baby and endless people who had higher risk but had healthy babies.

When I left the nuchal scan centre I thought, really I don't know much more than I knew before I had the scan...the only sure way of finding out would have been an invasive test and I just couldn't take the risk...(but then I didn't know about different rates of miscarriage in different hospitals)

Anyway, that's just me. I hope all yours go well, thinking of all you who have to get through with this!

OP posts:
bunny2 · 12/05/2004 12:27

webmum, thanks for that. That is very reassuring to me. Do you know why your nuchal showed such a high risk?

webmum · 12/05/2004 13:44

no idea bunny2

they say it might also be related to heart problems, hence the cardiac scan.
The blood test must have incredibly good though to bring the risk down by so much, which is one of the things that convinced me not to have any other tests (except the scan).

Which is quite strange as I'm usually one for knowing and being aware of anything that might happen (I must have the moste xtensive collection of books on babies around), but on this occasion I have become unusually fatalist. Can't explain it really, it is totally unlike me. (or you could call it cowardice: trying to leave any decisions for later or never) But when I saw the baby on the scan I just knew it, I could not think of terminating the pregnancy or having any invasive testing.

Sorry I keep rambling on about me, when you're going through a terrible time, but feel v. close toy ou in these moments.

lots of hugs

OP posts:
bunny2 · 12/05/2004 14:27

webmum, it is so good to have people who know what I am going through. I couldnt terminate this baby, I have fought so long to get this far. But I am absolutely terrified that the baby has a more serious problem, one that is not compatible with life or has a very high infant death rate. I dont think I could lose a baby after carying it to term, not without going completely crazy. Could my nuchal result indicate another syndrome?

webmum · 12/05/2004 14:46

bunny2

I know what you mean, but, having gone so far, and seen the baby on screen, and I do really wnat to meet him/her, and in a wierd kind of way I feel like I'd rather have a few months/hours with it than nothing at all, I can only imagine how devastating it might be, but I can't even consider the idea of doing something now, and never meet the baby. And after all, all this worrying might well be for nothing!

I might regret this later if it turns out to be something terrible (I ahve a friend whose baby died during an operation on his heart days after being born, so this is one the things on my mind)

AM i making any sense? Possibly not, as my pregnant brain (already burndened by motherhood and age)does not usually make much sense. Couple that with the fact that I am also trying to work at the same time...

OP posts:
webmum · 12/05/2004 14:50

sorry

I did not answer your question, but I am afraid I don't know what other problems can your nuchal scan indicate. I tried a search after my results but it was so depressing reading about all the different problems that I gave up!
