I'm a bit nervous about opening this thread as I've only foundt out I'm pregnant and anything can happen...anyway, due date 1st november, I still cant believe it.....
This is my second baby but I'm even more anxious about this pregnancy than first time round...I'd been wantind a 2nd baby for over a yera now, but dh wanted to wait longer, and now it's happened, but it wasn't planned at all!!!

We're both over the moon though, but trying to contain our happyness just in case....(easier said than done)

anyway, I fell better now, having shared this with you..

off to play with dd1 now!!!

bunny, so sorry, what a worrying result . I can't write much now, will log on later, but I am surprised at the m/c risk you have been quoted. I don't know much about these procedures but I know that the amnio risk is said to be between 0.5 and 1%, depending on the skill of the operator. I don't know if this would influence your decision though. jellycat xxx

bunny2 · 12/05/2004 15:04

Thanks Jellycat.

webmum, I have been googling away and am now even more worried about other problems, much worse than Downs. I really wish I hadnt gone for a nuchal scan.

Twinkie · 12/05/2004 15:07

WHo todl you that your miscarraige risk was so high Bunny - why higher than other peoples and remember it is genearl and nothign to do with the operator - tell them you want to go to kings if need be and get Prof Nicolaides to do it.

Bronze · 12/05/2004 16:22

Just wanted to say that a friend of mine was given the same odds as you Bunny and shes just had a perfectly healthy baby. Chin up

bunny2 · 12/05/2004 16:27

Bronze, thats the sort of thing I love to hear!

Twinkie, the sonographer said it was high and a normal measurement should be around 1.5. I have read alot which contradicts that though, apparently anything up to 3mm is considered normal according to alot of what I've read. She was also very dismissive of the other indicators such as nasal bone and calcium spots on the heart. We might get Prof N to scan me, perhaps to check the measurment and look at the heart too. Is it too soon for a detailed look at the heart?

piglit · 12/05/2004 16:31

Although it didn't come into the statistical result for my scan, my sonographer put a lot of emphasis on the nasal bone - apparently a more advanced type of nuchal scan (available soon - I saw this on ivillage I think) will include the size/shape of the nasal bone as well as the nuchal fold.

bunny2 · 12/05/2004 16:32

piglit I have read about this and cant understand why my sonographer was so dismissive. I think I will try to get a second opinion.

webmum · 12/05/2004 16:36

bunny2

my sonographer loked at the nasal bone, and she it was a good sign.
I had my scan at the Fetal Medicine Centre which is run by Prof. Nikolaides (or however is spelt), so I think they know what they're talking about.

Twinkie · 13/05/2004 09:47

bunny - my sonographer at the first scan said they did nothave the research to back up the nasal bone theory but he lady who did my scan and CVS at Kings seemed to set a lot by it and she is Prof Nicolaides deputy - prof did my last one and he even mentioned it 4 years ago when I had it!!

Both of my scans have given me measurements over 3mm but the lady at kings got all different measurements from 2.4 - 3.5 and I think it was just cause the baby was moving so much - please honey try not to worry too much - it is and believe me I know but the only thing you can do is try to get it checked out as much as you can.

The heart scan cannot be done until 20 weeks I think although the lady this time mentioned that she could see the 4 chambers of the heart and they were pumping away fine - even I could see that!!

I do think you should say yes to being referred to kings and just be scanned by someone with a little more experience and specialist knowledge even if you are not going to choose to have the CVS.

Who told you about the high rate of miscarraige - I have never heard that it could be higher than 1 - 2% - is it because fo your history.

bunny2 · 13/05/2004 10:17

Got to get myself to Kings. Stuff Poole hospital. Twinkie I was told the cvs had a risk of 3% at Poole and amnio 1.5%. Dh doesnt want to take the risk and I agree, we wouldnt terminate anyway so whats the point? Still feel crap about it though. I was awake most of the night worrying.

dejags · 13/05/2004 10:20

Twinkie/Bunny - sorry to gatecrash your thread but I was wondering if you could answer something for me.

I had my nuchal at Kings - the baby was moving around a lot and the sonographer struggled to get an accurate measurement. Eventually we had somebody more experienced do the scan and we were given a nuchal measurement of 2.4mm. This resulted in an maternal age risk factor of 1:685, adjusted from 1:649 on age alone. I was quite happy with this despite the fact that the risk factor was a lot higher than with my son (1:1500). I don't understand why your measurement has given you such an increased risk factor - I am 30 btw.

Do the other measurements have any bearing on calculating the risk factor?

vivie · 13/05/2004 14:27

Buuny2 and Twinkie
I can't imagine how you must be feeling but I just wanted you to know that that I'm sending you lots of love and I've got everything crossed for you.
Did you have blood tests as part of your nuchal scans? I was told that a measurement of less than 3mm was normal but I had a blood test too so I don't know if this makes any difference. I'm told that the bood testing makes the procedure much more accurate but it needs to be done before 13+6 weeks.

webmum · 13/05/2004 15:27

vievie

it is right about blood test making it more accurate, but as far as the actual nuchal measurement it depends how many weeks/days you are at the moment. I think teh risk is calculated against that.

In my case 2.7 was considered high in itself, but the blood test was ok.

thakns for responding, just as I thought it couldnt get worse I started bleeding bright red blood and cramping. Ds is downstairs playing with his birthday presents and I am up here terrified I am miscarrying. God Im scared.

collision · 13/05/2004 20:24

Bunny.......you poor thing......dont know what to say except you are in my thoughts and I really hope you are OK. Maybe go to the hosp when ds is in bed.

plantpot · 13/05/2004 22:45

although i havent posted on the board before i have no information or experience of the heartbreaking times both bunny 2 and twinkie are going through at the moment im just posting to say my thoughts are with you both

bunny2 · 14/05/2004 10:57

Jsut got back from the EPU, my baby is doing great . He/ she is jumping around, lovely heartbeat too. I am so relieved. Now I must stop all this worry and start to enjoy my pregnancy. I'm 12.4 so out of miscarriage territory, I will make a real effort to relax.

How is everyone else?

bunny2 · 14/05/2004 10:58

forgot to add, thanks Colission, Plantpot and everyone else for your kind words and support. It really helps when things look bleak.

PandaBear · 14/05/2004 11:29

Bunny2 - I am so relieved for you. What a scary time, fingers crossed it will be plain sailing for you from now on.

PotPourri · 14/05/2004 11:59

Hi all. I've been so busy and tired and sick that I haven't been on for a while.

Oh Bunny & Twinkie. So upset to hear about your worries, you really are in my thoughts. Bunny - great news about your latest scan. You try and chill. I know it doesn't ease the worry and heartache, but things always seem to work out somehow.

My maternity clothes are still not getting any wear (morning sickness), but I have been wearing joggy bottoms that are one size bigger than my normal size where possible. Still fit into my suits at work though, and I got a pair of elasticated waist black trousers (own size, not maternity but I think on the larger side of my size) from Cancer Research. So they will do me for work once the suit ones get too big.

Morning sickness still here, but it is nothing like as bad as it was. Maybe I am just getting used to it. I am soooo tired though, and if I get tired I also get more sick, so I am sleeping tonnes now. Now seem to be suffering from constipation - oh what a glamourous life it pregnancy! Anyone know if there is anything that would stop me taking Fybogel ongoing? I daren't take any pills, but Fybogel is just more fibre and it also says is ok for pregnancy & breastfeeding. It doesn't say you shoudldn;t take for more than a wekk or anything...

Welcome new joiners also. This really is a baby boom thread!

vivie · 14/05/2004 13:55

Bunny - I've just been reading this and your other thread with my heart in my mouth and tears in my eyes. I'm so happy that the scan was good news! Did they say why you were bleeding? Hope it's plain sailing from now on.

PP - I've had episodes of constipation too, this pg and the last one. I find dried figs help - 4 or so tend to get things moving. I quite like them so I have to be careful not to eat the whole bag when I'm in grazing mode. Hope your sickness and tiredness goes away soon. We must be blooming before too long!

My flabby belly suddenly turned into a baby bump at the weekend. I tried on my new maternity jeans and top for dh and he was a bit shocked at how I suddenly look obviously pregnant. Several people at Toddler group have commented this week too. I'm still able to wear loose, elasticated normal-type clothes but I think it'll be maternity clothes full time before very long.

Keep well everyone
viv xx

Twinkie · 14/05/2004 17:40

Bunny so glad to hear that everything is ok with you - sorry have only just logged on.

Ring me over the weekend if you need to. XXX

bunny2 · 14/05/2004 18:57

Hi
Twinkie, I never got your email so I cant ring. If you want to forward it by email Im on [email protected]. I'd like to talk, poss on Sunday. How are you? When do you expect your results back?

vivie, cant wait till I actually look pregnant, I am still in the "too many pies" category! I did wear some maternity jeans the other day and they felt really comfortable but I dont really need them just yet.

PP, fibogel is fine in pg as far as I know. Wait till the piles appear!!

jellycat · 14/05/2004 22:22

Hi everyone. Bunny, I posted a message on your other thread .

PP, Fybogel is fine as far as I know (I hope so cos I've been using it!). You can also use lactulose.

I think I felt the baby move last night! I wouldn't have known that was what it was if this wasn't my second. I was in bed, just dozing off, which is when it often happens, and there was this fluttering, really low down in my tummy. It kept happenning again and again, in the same place. It was a lovely end to a really awful day yesterday - dh had to go to A&E with a really bad abcess and it was really frightening but he's OK now. Two of the staff in there were pregnant and I felt sorry for them being on their feet so much, what a tough job.

Still just about managing in my normal clothes, although I saw a friend today who I haven't seen for a few weeks, and she said `Oh, you're showing already aren't you'. Hmmm, not sure how to take that one! My tummy is quite wobbly so it must be chocolate rather than baby.

eidsvold · 15/05/2004 06:43

hope everyone is doing okay - sorry that you have worries Bunny and Twinkie....

Jc - I thought I had felt my baby move this week - just little flutterings nothing much but wasn't sure - I am only 15 weeks and that seems too early to feel anything.

I am in the too many pies but my clothes are just that bit too tight and so have been wearing a couple of maternity shirts over elastic wasited skirts and I suddenly look pregnant when I put them on. I am sooo cross as I finally threw away a number of pregnant clothes in January this year thinking no room to send them to AUs - then go and get pregnant in February... oh well.

PP - I am still getting the odd bout of morning sickness - worse by the end of the week or if I have a big day/late night ... tiredness still there - that could jsust be from still working and trying to pack up a house and getting ready to move.
