Just found out I'm pregnant with an EDD on May 7th, so though I'ld kick off this thread. I have a DS who was two last week. I am suprised to find myself having very mixed emotions - excitement at the thought of a sibling for DS, but horror at the thought of the pregancy, birth and first few months. Anyone else just found out they're pregnant?

Yes good luck linnet. Also know what you mean about the memory thing

Had booking-in appt and have first scan date for 27 Nov and then to go immediately for triple test. New community midwife v. nice and got to hear heartbeat for first time.

Snips · 12/11/2003 16:14

Bozza

Must have been great hearing the heartbeat. Out of interest how did you get to hear the heartbeat? I called the hospital as I've had bleeding on and off, and they told me the only way I could check if all was ok was to have a scan which I've got Friday morning. They said there was no other way??

Bozza · 12/11/2003 17:20

Snips I just laid on my living room floor and the midwife used that instrument they have (sorry mental blank on name) and found it. I am currently 13wks+3 but it was very definitely a heart beat.

How far on are you? Hope everything is OK with the bleeding and scan.

Linnet · 12/11/2003 21:10

when I went in for my booking appointment last Thursday they told me I was 13 weeks +1 day and I asked if I could hear the heartbeat. The midwife told me that at that stage it was still very much a pelvic pregnancy and the baby hadn't moved up far enough for them to hear the heartbeat with the dopplar? not sure if that's how it's spelt but I think that might be what it's called. She said she could try but that I might worry more if we didn't hear anything definite. Hopefully tomorrow at my scan they will let me hear the heartbeat again.

thanks for all your good wishes I'll post tomorrow night and let you know how I got on.

Egypt · 13/11/2003 10:17

hi linnet and all
with regards to the 'pelvic pregnancy' still at 13 wks......is anyone else starting to feel a hard bit coming above their pelvis? this must be the uterus i am feeling, but my stomach is getting so big - well bloated! i wondered if it was the baby or water or.....food (prob!) am 13+4

Bozza · 13/11/2003 10:35

I remember that last time at my booking-in they couldn't hear it but that was at about 8-9 weeks so much earlier. She never said anything beforehand this time just did it.

As for the pelvic pregnancy. I have definitely got bigger round the middle and it is not baby because too soft. Although I think the baby is displacing the fat IYSWIM - partially and partially I have been eating a lot. And yes I can feel a hard bit jsut over the pubic area and have been able to for some time. I think this happened with me early last time as well because I was scanned early because of possible twins, inaccurate dates etc.

libb · 13/11/2003 19:27

Hi everyone,

Glad to hear that you are all getting on well with your verious scans etc. What is a pelvic pregnancy exactly? I don't think I am showing much at all, but I know what you mean about thickening round the waist! sometimes I think I am showing and other times I just feel blobby!

My first scan is on Tuesday and I must admit to feeling a bit nervous.

Hope you are all keeping well

much love, Libb

Linnet · 13/11/2003 22:33

Hey everyone,

Well went in today for my 14 week scan to check things out. Dr M who does the scanning first of all said that she couldn't see any fluid so I got a bit excited. Then the consultant arrived as well, Dr G, and he said that there was still some fluid, Hhhmmm. Well baby was all over the place doing gymnastics and wouldn't keep still for anyone. They tried a couple of times to get a measurement on the fluid and got a reading of 3mm and then a reading of 3.4mm. So I wasn't feeling as reasured as I had been at the beginning. But one thing that Dr M said was that if she had been scanning me today for the first time she would have said yes everything is fine off you go wouldn't even have mentioned the fluid or suggested an amnio. so I guess that is something at least.

The cord looks fine they think that all the insides just hadn't gone all the way in yet but it has now so that is one less thing to worry about. They also tried to have a good look at the heart, although with only being 14 weeks it wasn't to clear a look but they tried anyway and said that so far it looks ok, not to big not to small all bits seem to be working but they will have another good look at it when I go in for my 19 week scan, the Friday before christmas, aagghh didn't realise christmas was so close until they gave me that date.

I'm getting my amnio done on the 25th when I'll be 15 ½ weeks and will have the full results back within two weeks. If they get a clear sample I'll get some results back within 48 hours but if not it'll be 2 weeks.

So that's all for now. I have some test/result to look forward to almost every week up until christmas. Within 4 weeks we'll know where we stand and hopefully, all being well, we'll be able to tell our families at christmas, just hope that I can keep it all hidden until then. Not showing much at all at the moment so I'm hoping that I'll be able to get away with it for a few weeks more at least.

Good luck with your scan tomorrow Snips. And you too Libb. Talk to you all soon.
Linnet

Egypt · 14/11/2003 10:07

Linnet
thats sounds much better news. so pleased for you. good luck with the tests.

prufrock · 14/11/2003 12:55

Linnet I'm glad things are looking better.

I've just had my dating scan at 14 weeks and had an EDD of 14th May confirmed. The baby waved at us!

libb · 17/11/2003 21:04

Hi guys,

We've all been very quiet here recently. I hope you are all well and happy.

I have my first scan tomorrow and feel terrified! (I think I think too much for my own good sometimes!)

Anyway, speak to you all soon to let you know how it went.

Much love,
Libb xx

Snips · 17/11/2003 21:15

Libb

Your scan will be fine and it will be so exciting to see the little one!

I had a scan last Friday (my 3rd!) as I've had a lot of bleeding. Thankfully baby was ok, and dh and I were so relieved. The last three weeks or so whilst I've been bleeding have seemed so long, but I really feel pregnant now, and as though I can start to enjoy it more. How's everyone else doing? Have all of you that were feeling sick starting to feel better now? I know my tiredness seems to be easing now. Thought I might go shopping at the weekend for a few maternity clothes as my normal clothes seem to be getting a bit tight!

Egypt · 17/11/2003 21:21

Hi all
Yes i seem to be feeling better on the sickness and tiredness front, although am still having these horrendous headaches that have had for 2 weeks. Doc says doesnt know what it is. midwife says hormones.. i say sinuses. they last from morn to evening and i am sick of them. plus i'm a teacher which must be the worst job in the world when you just want peace and quiet. Am taking paracetamol to the max (doc says thats fine) but she also gave me beconase nasal spray for just 5 days. not worked though. nor does the paracetamol. have that 4Head stick and homeopathic remedies.......all fail. anyone else the same????? HELP!!!!!!

Libb, you will love the scan. i was so scared b4 the first one. i couldnt believe that there would be a normal baby in there, and was absolutely amazed to see one. have had a nuchal scan since and it was also amazing. enjoy!

GeorginaA · 17/11/2003 22:29

Just heard today that due to sickness of staff at the hospital that all 20 week scans are being cancelled. That means I'll still have my dating scan (14 weeks - on Wednesday) but won't get my 20 week one.

I'm absolutely gutted. I was really looking forward to that one as I found out the sex of my baby last time around (I know it's not 100% guaranteed, but it was a really magical moment being able to call it "he" instead of "it" and I'm very very upset that I'm not going to get that opportunity this time around. I'm probably being extremely silly, and there's far better things to spend NHS resources on than giving a pregnant mother a chance to find out the sex of her baby (plus check for abnormalities etc which I've been told the 14 week scan catagorically doesn't do), but I really can't help feeling that I've been robbed of something!

Sorry, I know people on here have bigger things to worry about, but I'm sitting here almost in tears...

GeorginaA · 17/11/2003 22:30

smiley snuck in - was supposed to be a close bracket

Linnet · 17/11/2003 22:43

Oh Georgina, don't cry, Aren't they going to reschedule your 20 week scan?
Since that is the scan that they use to look at the heart and spine I would have thought that "technically" it was more important than any earlier scan, IYKWIM.
If they have been cancelled due to staff sickness is it not just a temporary cancellation? In 6 weeks time the staff will be back to full health and able to do scans once again surely.

Good Luck with your scan on Wednesday and let us know how you get on

GeorginaA · 17/11/2003 22:47

I may have got the facts twisted, but I was told cancelled (as they already have huge backlogs) - they're just cancelling a month's worth of scans. (My friend is 9 weeks pregnant and had the midwife visit today while my ds and her dd were playing).

I think I will phone up and ask the midwives directly tomorrow in case I've got the end of the stick. If I haven't and I can't have it on the NHS I think I'll look to get it done privately - the scan was so reassuring the first time around, and I don't want to miss out

GeorginaA · 18/11/2003 08:55

No, I haven't got the end of the stick - the radiology department have "withdrawn the service" presumably until further notice. Apparently due to illness they can no longer cope with demand and they can't get through all the cancer patients.

Eventually they will get themselves sorted out and have a protocol for which high risk pregnancies will still get scans (which I wouldn't be anyway). Their reasoning is that they wouldn't pick up much at that scan anyway so it isn't "important" (it's not?! It's the only damn diagnostic test I'm having ffs!)

The midwife has also tried to put me off going privately saying there's a danger for what they look for and that they might not be accredited and look too long and damage the foetus!

So I'm really upset now and don't know what to do. I was so looking forward to that scan and had planned to take ds along with us to see the new baby and find out whether it was a brother or sister, and I was looking forward to the reassurance. I just don't know whether to start looking into a private scan or not and now I'm really confused what questions I should be asking if I do look for a private scan.

libb · 18/11/2003 19:20

Hello everyone,

Georgina, I was so sorry to hear about your 20 week scan - I really hope that they can re-assess the situation nearer the time maybe? I had my first ever scan today and can understand your desire for the next one, I would be heartbroken so I am thinking of you and hope that it will be sorted out soon.

Much love, Libb xx

Bozza · 19/11/2003 14:32

Georgina I read your other thread about the scan and would really think you should take action to get it done privately or whatever. What your midwife said about risks seems very odd. Would definitely ask a second opinion about it.

I am having my dating scan on 27 Nov and then my fetal anomaly scan on 2 Jan so not very spaced. Am a bit cross about dating scan being so late (am 14 weeks already) and midwife said go straight round for blood tests afterwards as will be 15 weeks already. So what would have happened if I had got my dates wrong - it would be too late to have them.

Anyway was quite miserable over the weekend. Started being sick (couldn't decide if it was morning sickness or bug) and had headache and cold. Managed to go out on Friday night and stayed at PIL where bedroom was incredibly stuffy. So felt hungover even though all I'd drunk was one orange juice and water all night. BUT I think the tiredness is just about lifting a little at last. Although went Christmas shopping yesterday and was in bed asleep at 8.45 pm so not there yet.

GeorginaA · 19/11/2003 14:51

Thank you so much for all your support. Bozza - sorry to hear you've been feeling so ill. Feeling crappy seems to be magnified a thousand fold when you're pregnant, doesn't it? Hope you feel better soon.

I'm feeling on a high at the moment. Just come back from my dating scan. Much newer equipment at Worcester hospital compared to the Croydon one - it was such a clear image! I saw the little hands and feet moving around - little one was playing with his toes, rubbing them together, was SO SWEET! I've been so ambivalent about being pregnant up to now, but I think I'm falling in love!

I'm 13wks + 3 so a new EDD of 24/5/04. And there's only one in there (bit worried about that - twins run in the family!)

Best of all, while we were there, we were told there's been an update on the 20 week scans. Presumably they've received a lot of flak about it, as they've started drafting in doctors to help the sonographers catch up. We will get 20 week scans, but we may get very little notice. I am feeling so utterly relieved.

Pleasantly surprised about the hospital - I'd heard a fair few horror stories, but it looked really clean, I was seen on time, everything seemed very efficient and modern. Such a change from the hospital I had ds in! Feeling altogether much more relaxed about everything as a result.

So all in all, a very very good day.

Bozza · 19/11/2003 16:00

Oh that all sounds brilliant Georgina especially about the scans. I could just imagine how you felt about that. Not altogether surprised that people kicked up a fuss though. I suppose little notice seems a small price compared to the prospect of not having one at all.

I'm already feeling loads better. Still feeling a bit queasy but only how I have been for weeks and my cold's much better. Its just so stuffy in the office that I'm having to mumsnet to stay awake!

BTW Georgina how much has your EDD moved? And do you believe the scan dates or your own dates?

GeorginaA · 19/11/2003 16:17

It moved 3 days later to the original EDD... don't really know which I trust more really! My ds was overdue anyway, so I don't tend to pay too much attention to the date

Bozza · 19/11/2003 16:21

They moved mine to 3 days earlier last time not sure there's much point in bothering. It made DS 1 day overdue instead of 2 days early. But they originally cocked it up and got it a week across. As far as I can see the main effect is on work and eligibilty for leave, date by which decisions have to be made etc rather than anything to do with mother, baby or birth. Apart from if they try to suggest an induction on due date as my midwife mentioned.

Egypt · 19/11/2003 20:10

Great news Georgina. SO pleased for you. Isnt a scan absolutely brilliant! It's amazing to think that you are looking at a little baby inside of yourself! Could stay watching all day.

Am feeling much more myself as well. Still got those awful headaches but some people have suggested getting a vaporiser from boots, so will do that. And of course, still got the wind! Where does it all come from? And only in the eve immediately after tea and last all night.! Anyone else!?
