Ali - if Jacob is sucking for comfort, try putting your finger in his mouth before introducing the dummy, then he might not gag. Worth a try. Thomas has a dummy as when he finishes his feed he either, on the breast will do the quick sucking action but not swallow, so milk just pours everywhere, or when he has a bottle he does all his feeding cues, but will refuse more food. I know when he's actually hungry as he will spit the dummy out and scream for food (and he's on a 3.5 - 5 hour cycle). I do have the same issue as CTOFN in trying to get the dummy back in in the middle of the night and not poking his eyes/nose/ears by accident.

Congrats to all the new arrivals.

somewhathorrified · 28/01/2010 16:50

Have to say we've caved in and bought some infacol for Tobin's incessant wind driven afternoon crying and it worked a treat, although his poo's were a bit on the watery side and he sharts alot, bless him. Trying to avoid giving him any today to see if that's what's caused the BM issue.

Haven't dared to try a dummy yet as didn't want to have to contend with even more nipple confusion and tbh atm there isn't much point as he's on the breast most of the time anyway and sleeps beautifully at night (I swear he'd sleep for a full 8hrs if we let him!) as it is we let him sleep for 5 hrs at night max although this still meas I only get 3hrs sleep at a time...mustn't moan at that though.

Deemented · 28/01/2010 18:27

Not long back from our hospital appointment.

The good news is that Tate doesn't have a heart murmur after all, but they have found that the artery that takes the blood to his left lung is narrower then it should be - that's what the doctor heard. The sonographer said she couldn't really discuss it, but was able to say that sometimes babies outgrow this and it rights itself, and sometimes it doesn't and could require surgery. Either way, they will do more scans on him as he grows. We have an appointment for Feb.16th to meet with the consultant who'll be looking after Tate, so i guess we'll know more then.

Am feeling a bit mixed, and have vowed to stay away from google, but knowing something is better then being left in limbo to worry.

Fraochsmum · 28/01/2010 18:52

That is fantastic news Dee, you must be so pleased/relieved!
MrsMarjorie that is brilliant about the bf so far on - well done you
Congrats to MamaLaz on the birth of Luther and hopefully better times are ahead. My cousin (who gave birth a couple of months ago) is having to go for pelic floor surgery it really makes me realise how lucky I have been.
On an aside, I asked about intercourse earlier and am still a little unsure. We made love a couple of nights ago (3 weeks after bubba), but am now wondering what is 'the done thing', if people are concerned about using tampons - is it an infection issue?

MamaLazarou · 28/01/2010 20:49

Hello all, I hope you and your babies are well. Thanks to Cantthinkoffunnyname for adding me to the list. I will post my birth story when I am feeling a bit braver . My little boy is absolutely wonderful, and has made what would otherwise have been a hellish week bearable. He looks just like me, which I was very surprised about! I was expecting/hoping him to look like his father, but I'm ever so pleased that he is like me. I don't know why - maybe it's just that he seems more familiar. DH is pleased about it, too - he says it makes him easier to love .

How are you all getting on with breastfeeding? I've been struggling, despite endless patience and help from the midwives. I think my baby is similar to alibobins - loves to suckle, but doesn't actually seem to gain much sustenance from it. Yesterday, he was on the boob for three hours, and still hungry, so I gave him a bottle of formula and he chugged down 100ml. I then expressed 150ml and another 150ml in the evening, so the milk is definitely there - the midwives say he just has a 'lazy latch' and a bit of tongue-tie. I'm going to a drop-in clinic tomorrow for some advice (I find the thought of an outing with the baby daunting to say the least, also DH is going into work (though he will come straight home if I need him) which I'm terrified about).

Wow - can't believe that I managed such a long post! It's amazing what you can manage to type one-handed.

Deemented · 28/01/2010 21:43

Tate had real problems latching on, and the only thing that's worked for us is if i hold my breast underneath so the areolae(sp?) is really firm and hard - he's then able to get some purchase on it and can latch on well. We were in hospital for three days because he simply couldn't latch on - he'd be looking and rooting, and make all the right moves, but just couldn't get a good grip to feed. I think they call it an exaggerated latch hold or something - only things is it means using both hands - one to hold boob and one tohold baby.

I hope you can get your feeding issues sorted soon, MamaLazarou.

Mama2b5 · 29/01/2010 00:15

Good morning all new mummies. I have finally joined your elite band of soldiers albeit 10 days late but a very happy mummy here.

Hope everyone is ok, have posted on ante natal as well, I was quite stressed at everyone leaving me so am still posting so they don't feel abandoned. Thanks for updating me on list cant although I need to change my name to 'Party of seven maybe eight sometime in the distance future when I have gotten over the stress of this one or something similar' but just Party of seven for short.

Birth story

Tuesday 26 - 40+10 due to go to hospital to discuss options, induction on thursday 28th.

Tues 26th 2am - woke up with stitch like pain on right side, thought nothing of it went back to sleep. Kept waking me every twenty mins or so. Got up at 6am, told dh thought this was it and went downstairs, sorted breakfasts and packed lunches for other dcs. Everyone up and out for 8am, dropped 2 lo at mums and headed for hosp.

9.15 walking to ward had 2 really strong cont which made me cry (wimp) thought it was immenent. Got on MLU pains every 10 mins, checked 1-2cms OMG. mw to come back and review in 4 hours. sister arrived so good to go.

2pm checked 4cms -said I could use pool now. Immediately after checked had cont which didn't go for about two mins, everyone in a bit of a panic but managed to get to pool room.

4pm got in pool - the best feeling in the world. mw bit concerned baby no5 not just flying out, so examined me in pool, last cm on cervix being stubborn so told to breath through cont and not push (IS SHE HAVING A LAUGH) manged to breath through next 3/4 but was starting to lose it. (could see dh in corner with head in hands - bless him but not helping.) Checking baby every 5 mins and even though was moving down and head right there NOTHING.

5pm baby heart rate v. high for 3 consecutive measures so had to get out of pool immediately (dh now nearly passed out in corner) OMG I am going to die with the pain/pressure but I am not to push (well do something so i can push you stupid woman) 'don't lose it now susan' if I could have got up I would have killed her, as lovely as she was. Babys heart rate back to normal.

Examined me and she pushed cervix over babys head, and I have to say through out it all that was the worse moment EVER! Then she says my waters are still intact and very tight over babys head, so she pops my water and one enormous push, head out, one more and baby arrives at 6.22pm. 'what it is, what is it?' Its a girl. Said to dh I AM SOOOOOOOOOO DONE ITS NOT TO BE WE ARE NOT DESTINED TO HAVE A BOY. No stitches or grazes, placenta 10mins later. left alone to have baby snuggles.

8.30pm everyone gone home, had bath, in nice clean bed just staring at my beautiful little girl.

Turns out baby was slightly turned so not pushing on cervix effectively enough for the last little bit, and mw said I have very strong membranes, have had to have them all popped.

Bit of a nightmare on weds, so wanted to get home, but short staffed so no one to do discharge and had listen to poor girl giving birth next door from 4am - still at it when I finally left at 5pm. but on the whole a very positive experience hospital was great, mws and students all lovely.

Ater two days of bringing up birth fluid, and having a bit of a fright yesterday when she couldn't get her breath whilst being sick, her lips went blue, she now seems fine. feeding every 4 hours and sleeping inbetween. I have been having a few after pains and my spd is improving so on the whole we are a happy little BIG family.

lol biccy I will change my name to Party of seven.

Told dh when I have next one I'm having an epidural!! How easily we forget, 60hrs later and I'm having another, oh well i suppose i should sleep while she is, happy birthing vibes to anyone that needs them, will check back later.

nappyaddict · 29/01/2010 10:58

Sorry to hijack but CRUMPETTE on the babymoon thread you said you hadn't told anyone about James. Just wondered if you'd had any visitors yet. I think you've definitely got the right idea with that one. With my next I'm going to tell everyone my due date is actually a month later than it is

somewhathorrified · 29/01/2010 11:17

frao I think that re sex, there's 2 schools of thought...1 says sex when you feel ready for it (taking it easy), 2 says wait for 6 week check (I think this is if you have stitches). At the end of the day I don't think that you have any thing to worry about re infection unless you actually tore in there. If you are really worried about it you can always phone the mw unit, HV, or someone like that.

Lottie so good to hear from you. I have to say I don't envy you having twins, I'm finding it hard enough work with the one! Hats off to you.

CantThinkofFunnyName · 29/01/2010 11:48

Very quick post from me to Fraoch re sex - of course! Look basically, if you want to and feel ready, then do it, particularly if you don't have any stitches!

A friend of mine who had kids years and years ago used to basically be at it 1 or 2 days afterwards - and they were a several times a day couple !

I have to say that I absolutely feel ready for it - particularly having gone without for much of the pregnancy due to bloody SPD and not being able to open my legs much (sorry TMI), it's only the fact that I've had a c-section, have not got to 6 weeks yet - oh and of course that DH and I are now like passing ships in the night due to feed duties that we haven't.

So go ahead and then post back all the gory details so I can be v v envious of you !

Mama2b5 · 29/01/2010 12:16

hahaahhah CTOFN- your just so funny! SEX talk anywayhow are you with your spd? im still abit sore and sometimes turning over or sitting hurts! im hoping it will soon fade out, well praying is more my stance!Sore boobs ahhhhhhhhhh!
its seem that isaiah has wind and some times is just doubled up and crying i feel so helpless, have got infacol but he spits it straight back out! never had this before - HELP!!!!! well is it wind?

Partyofseven · 29/01/2010 12:39

Hi all, just updated my 'Partyofseven' name. did someone mention SEX, I'm not sure I'm up for that but hopefully it won't be too long. Like cant me amd dh are passing in the night, but she is only 3 days old so maybe a bit keen.

Yangymac has had a little girl and Devotion in labour and all set up for her longed for home birth!

I've started today trying out the EASY Baby Whisperer routine/techniques with Olivia. Do you know, despite this being my 3rd, I seem to have forgotten everything ! With the other 2 it was really easy peasy and this one seems to have floored me a bit. Didn't bother with books and just fell into a routine that worked but for the life of me can't remember what I did or how I did it! Oh well. She was supposed to sleep from about 11:30 but was completely grouchy and finally went off 10 minutes ago, I'm now supposed to be feeding her but not sure I have the heart to wake her? Still, no pain, no gain. I guess the first few days of putting the routine in place will be the hardest.

WMDO - hope you find us here when you get time to post! x

What is this 'sex' of which you speak? I haven't had it since October. Seriously. DH is worried about 'damage' though I have assured him that at 8 weeks post-partum it has all healed up and me getting pregnant again, but refuses to do anything about the latter by buying any condoms, leaving me to decide I will buy some at Waitrose tomorrow with the rest of the shopping to avoid the .

Lottie - we have Thomas in the sitting room with us in the evenings as he doesn't have a bedtime yet and is often awake between his evening and dreamfeed so it seems cruel to shove him upstairs. We'll change this when he starts dropping the night feeds but until then it seems pointless.

The NCT counsellor has just been and all seems well with the bfing . I just need to build confidence and get more comfortable when I feed as I'm sitting in a variety of hunched and awkward positions, but its just practice. I was thinking of posting my story on the breast and bottle feeding boards, but thought it might sound a bit self congratulatory? (Or should I do an AIBU post - Would telling my bfing story make me look like a nob? )

The sun is out for what feels like the first time in about 700 years, so we're off for a walk to the park.

lottie no routine for me (I haven't got dressed yet or had breakfast and it's already 2pm, am on MN with baby feeding and typing one-handed and and aaaargh)
With DD, there was no real routine until she got a bit older. DD used to 'hang out' with us, play with her toys, sit in her bouncy chair or swing quite contented but on her own she'd scream. Tried so hard to get her used to sleeping on her own initially but failed and by 8 weeks were co-sleeping..By the time she was about 6 or 7 months she was able to go to sleep on her own in her own cot at about 7.30, then sleep through til 3 or 4 at which point she'd come into my bed and sleep til about 7.
The only thing that worked to get her used to it was having a mobile that lit up and played some nice songs so when it was switched on it was officially bed time, and then she knew it was time to be quiet and try to sleep. With piglet I'm hoping he will be as good as she was, so I'm just not bothering with routines etc while he is tiny.

and (due to xpost)

crumpette - I found Thomas favouring one side and read some great advice on mumsnet (search breast rejection) about putting the baby to feed on the same side as the favoured breast, i.e. if the baby lies on their LHS to feed off the right breast, hold them in the rugby hold to feed off the left. I have ended up actually sitting Thomas up to my left on the sofa / bed facing my boob which has worked really well, particularly as it helps him get under the nipple.
