Thanks everyone - yes DH is just home and DD is now safely tucked up in bed having been cuddled just a little too much for her liking! We are looking at flying out to SA for the funeral but it is likely to be the end of next week to co-incide with DD's birthday so I am now in a do we don't we about cancelling DD's birthday party or moving it to another week end. I know she will not know any better but I don't want her day to be sad. I should just wait for plans to be made and go from there I guess.

TwilightSurfer · 21/08/2009 19:56

Oops I am very sorry for your loss.

Oops the party can wait and when Poppy is older she will completely understand why.

oops I'm so sorry, so so sorry Go with what your heart tells you. Wishing you strength x

hotterpotter · 21/08/2009 20:35

Can any of us remember our first birthday? No. I have absolutely no idea what happened on my birthday for the first 5 or 6 years of my life. DD won't care Oops - like Cyteen says: go with your heart

RedLentil · 21/08/2009 21:33

Oops - my dear girl, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Growing up in and around 'emigrated' families, my strong feeling is that you should follow your heart go if you can at all.

It is very hard to deal with the reality of somehting like this if you don't manage to get to the funeral.

oopsacoconut · 21/08/2009 21:35

Well I guess the decision is more than likely ging to be taken out of our hands flights are looking VERY expensive for the shortest routes (direct to johannesburg then on to durban) it is going to cost us £3500 to get over. I refuse to even entertain the idea of leaving DD here with DH and DH refuses to let DD and me go alone. I know it will all become clear once we have an idea of plans. Her dad was so very sad on the phone tonight

If it is meant to be then we will get there but as her dad said if we can't get there then we can at least celebrate her life here and throw a whacking great party for DD with plenty of wine

pertelote · 21/08/2009 22:32

Oh Oops I'm so sorry. What an awful thing, and to have to worry about whether you can get over to the funeral just piles unfairness on unfairness. Very for you.

hotterpotter · 21/08/2009 23:21

Oh Oops what a bugger whatever you decide in the end will be OK, you will be able to find your own way to say goodbye

I don't know whether it is a comfort, but like VG said , at least she was chipper to the end. I have seen too many people with cancer die in a horrible, dragged out and painful way, at least she didn't have to suffer that

lwfh · 21/08/2009 23:45

oops, how sad. I find it really tough as well, being so far from friends and family, so when things happen and I want to just be there but can't it feels doubly tough.

But if you are still looking for flights I often find that I can get the best deals on www.opodo.co.uk

miamla lots of sympathy re: D&V. I had a horrid attack when DS was 6 months and got hysterical when my MIL took him away when I went to hospital. Both were fine, and I got better very quickly. But if you end up not being able to BF much (not for DS's sake, but because you are completely wrecked) try milk in a sippy cup and don't worry as I think a short break in BF shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Thoughts for all, especially some brave thoughts for Miss Buckets.

hotterpotter · 22/08/2009 08:04

Oops hope you are feeling OK today

Miamla hope you and DS are feeling OK too, D&V is grim at the best of times, never mind when you and DC are ill. At least DS is still in nappies

TS hope you got on OK at DD2's 12 month check. Am a little bit at the number of 12-month checks going on - we had one at 7 months and that's it now until age 2 Most HVs seem to have at least some degree of idiocy in them so shouldn't really mind. Just like other people seeing how gorgeous DS is

Buckets too. If you don't want chemicals, around here they recommend loading your hair with conditioner and combing thoroughly. The little gits can't hold on to the slippery hair and all come off on the comb. Not sure about the eggs but if you do it every few days they never get a chance to lay more once they've hatched. It is one time when I am glad of mine and DD's fine hair as it only takes two minutes to omb through. MY friend's DD has luxurious thick tresses and it can take her up to half an hour

Poor DS in a crying mood this morning, maybe has something to do with his black eye which he got flinging himself around

hotterpotter · 22/08/2009 08:07

Happy Birthday Marcus

Don't eat your cake until your mummy has taken a photo of it for us

oopsacoconut · 22/08/2009 08:15

Morning all

I am most likely going to hide for a few days. I am having a bit of trouble coping with all the e-mails and sorting out that is going on. DH being fantastic and supportive but typically man like, logical and clear cut.

HP thanks for asking I am okay but all those long feeds DD had in the night left me a lot of lonely thinking time which wasn't great but this morning we are off to do what we had planned for yesterday. We are off to Bucketrs land for a bit of shopping and lunch out (don't tell Sazzles) Poor DS hope all he needs is a nap to restor his joyous mood.

DD was stung on the lip yestrerday when she tried to eat a bee No real reaction and I managed to suck the sting out with a full poison sack. no harm done and she was back trying to pick them off theplants within the hour.

going to rescue DD from the recycling tube where she is head first only legs sticking out the top.

oopsacoconut · 22/08/2009 08:16

Sorry that was all memememe.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY* MARCUS* have a great day and enjoy your cake.

dizzydixies · 22/08/2009 09:10

HAPPYBIRThDAY MARCUS!!! hope you have a lovely day

oops me heart is just breaking for you, I can remember how frustrated when I couldn't go to my uncle's funeral in May - I felt like I was letting everyone else down when of course I had no choice. Your friend's dad sounds lovely and I agree with him entirely, if it is all getting too complicated then please don't do it - am sure your friend would be the first one to tell you that too. Have your party for DD, vow to tell DD all about your lovely friend and promise yourself that you'll keep in touch with your friend's children and father to help keep her memory alive for them.

and huge kudos for dealing with the bee sting - am pathetic in a crisis which is ironic considering my job

miamla hope you're feeling better

sazz hope you're enjoying your hen weekend

love to all else, am shattered, pathetically so considering I've only done two 5hr shifts but its very tiring sitting blatantly not being spoken to and we were busy last night too

off to see a woman about a cabinet she wants to give to the cafe and then to take the kids to a party - hope its as sunny where you all are

dizzydixies · 22/08/2009 09:12

me heart is breaking for you?!?!? sorry oops

time for me not to be here as my spelling/typing etc is all mortifying

hotterpotter · 22/08/2009 09:14

Oops hope you have a good day

Think I've discovered one of the reasons for this morning's grumpiness - just changed the most disgusting nappy I've ever see. They eat fruit of all kinds by the bucketful but have never had blackberries before. MIL sent some stewed blackberry & apple over yesterday which was delicious, but not only did it turn my teeth black (temporarily I hasten to add), it also turned Isaac's poo to black ink mxed with peas and sweetcorn.

Oops Thinking of you and your friend's fmaily. Hopefully it's an opportunity to have a really special time with DH and DD on your trip, your friend would like that too.

Hotter Yup, that's what I'm doing, but adding teatree to the conditioner each time.

Went to see Time Traveler's Wife last night - was impressed, it was a very good book-to-movie transition. Eric Bana is a v dull Ken-doll though, wooden acting but nice to look at. My friend is very expressive and hooted (loudly and poshly) at anything the slightest bit funny and kept gasping audibly at every plot turn, had forgotten how funny she is in cinemas.

DD went off to cinema ok loaded up with toys, photo of Kurt and blankie. I left her in bed reading her worry book last night so maybe some of it went in. Also told friend's dad not to take it personally if she cried and just let his girls deal with it. BTW They are the source of the nits! We saw them last Wednesday and apparently they had them then. DD's friend is v huggy and physical so we never stood a chance LOL.

sambo303 · 22/08/2009 13:01

afternoon all

miamla how are you and T? dp was up all night being sick, horrendous. We have cancelled all birthday party visits this weekend (were due to go to 4)
oops your poor friend, so sorry for her friends and family, it's very cruel
no1 hope M has a lovely birthday today

my phone has crashed, off to the shop to find out if it's fixable. Its at moments like these I wish I was organised and had all my numbers saved somewhere else
