I don't clean his ears aubergenie, and have never cleaned dd's either! The wax drops out when it's ready.

And another question: Is anyone doing baby signing? We've just started it with S. I've only used the sign for milk so far, but I'm going to introduce some more. I thought I'd try as the signs will be useful for work too, as we have a lot of children with special needs in my school for whom basic signing would be useful.

heather1980 · 05/03/2009 22:20

i did it with dd. it can get a bit confusing because there are 3 types of sign - baby sign, makaton and bsl.
makaton is the same one that's used on something special (mr tumble)

aubergenie · 05/03/2009 22:24

I'm doing signalong which is based on BSL, I think. Signalong is the one that's mostly used in our local schools, so I thought I'd kill 2 birds with one stone, so to speak. How did you find it Heather? Did dd start to sign back at you?

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/03/2009 07:22

I did some signing with dd, but we started when she was still very unsettled, so the classes were hard work. The teacher was also barking, and I wasn't massively good at remembering to do a lot of the signs (and dh never remembered), so we gave up.

star6 · 06/03/2009 08:42

myjob - it was only the "this is cbeebies" song with the characters dancing around over and over and over again on the cbeebies channel (305 tiscali). It wasn't an actual programme, just the "filler" for before it actually begins. But Q doesn't know the difference
I want to try the signing. It's like another language to me. I speak 4 other languages and would LOVE to pass on linguistic flexibility to DS. DH does NOT have this at ALL! I think signing would be a good start!

aubergenie · 06/03/2009 09:06

Star - there's quite a nice book on baby signing here:. It's based on British sign language though, and maybe you will want an American one which, I think, is completely different. I know what you mean about wanting to encourage ds's lingustic flexibility. We keep talking about moving abroad (Europe, France or Germany probably, as I've got those languages) and that's a very important reason for me.

I've got a back massage this morning at the sure start centre. Can't wait!

star6 · 06/03/2009 09:40

Thanks aubergenie I'll use BSL since we're in England... when in Rome... or the UK...
We want to move into Europe in a few years as well. 2 more years until we have indefinite leave to remain in the UK and then we will have an easier time getting jobs/visas in Europe than we would without it.
Enjoy your massage! Sounds lovely

heather1980 · 06/03/2009 11:42

we have that book! she did some of the signs but not many. like milk and food etc.
i did baby sign and would have prefered bsl but couldn't find a course so i taught myself some signs.
my tesco delivery driver is deaf so i practice on him!

star6 · 06/03/2009 12:15

I feel so nauseous all of a sudden I'm at work, have loads to do and can't function. Q went to sleep at 9.45pm last night that's more than 2 hours past his normal time... and I've been falling asleep with him a lot of nights at 7pmish I can't help it. I feel like I deserve the sleep Can't wait for weekend!

star6 · 06/03/2009 12:17

wow, that was a lot of smileys in one post! oh my goodness. I just realized that there is an instruction guide on how to post links right underneath the smileys...

star6 · 06/03/2009 12:39

where is everyone today? Did you start another secret thread?

Ekka · 06/03/2009 12:45

Star, I'm longing for the weekend and I don't even work! Hope that you manage to get some rest this weekend and recharge a bit.

We've been looking at schools today for dd, as dh has no real idea of the UK school system so we're trying to visit all the local ones, both independent and state schools. Dd caused havoc, she loved being in the classrooms and with all the other kids, ds on the other hand just fell asleep! He did sleep for 3 hours at one stretch last night (unfortunately between 8-11pm when I was downstairs on the phone, so I didn't get any more sleep.... And he was up loads between 3-5am. I think its his eczema as he is red raw & itching like mad today. Docs appt this afternoon to see if they can do anything for him, plus the HV has promised me some info on 'wet wrapping' which is supposed to help. I am remembering to be dairy free, though I'm going to have to cook dh a dairy free b-day cake for next week as I don't have the willpower to resist chocolate cake! Any good recipes are always welcomed!

csws sorry I cant seem to find an easy way to access groups on FB other than go to home page and click on groups in applications! I thought maybe they could be put in the tabs where 'wall' 'info' 'photos' etc are but they wont go there!

aubergenie I pick the wax out of DD's ears!!! I dont use a cotton bud excpet for in the top part or around the hole but dont stick it in the ear, apparantly ears are self cleaning and you are not meant to put anything in them but I hate yellow wax am a real picker to do pick with my fingers

I just got my habd stuck in the hoover before I was carrying it upstairs and when I went to put it down I was stuck to it I had the skin on the side of my hand stuck in a massive crack (which must be new as never seen it before) and it pinched the skin and I could not undo it, quite funny now when I think about it but bloody painful at the time and not nice to see! It looked like one of those practical joke things you stick either side of your finger and looks like it has gone straight through the middle!! Anyway, I have the smallest red mark and no war wounds to get sympathy from now !!!

got friend coming over today and getting chinese tongiht...yummy!!! Mum picking dd1 up from playgroup and bringing her home tonight .

myjob she is growing, just slowly and is fine I am sure, my friends DD is the same where as mine is now over 14lb! They are all different and the way I look at it is we are all of different shapes and sizes

star hope you feel better soon. Maybe you need some food? Or are you pregnant!!!! Its prob tiredness and hunger, hope you feel better though.

star6 · 06/03/2009 13:40

Ekka - have you heard of Elidel? It's steroid Free and works really really well for eczema - and is for children.
Have you used Oilatum Jr. cream?
For wet wrapping - oilatum cream + vaseline or just vaseline and plastic wrap, wrapped around the area a few times (not too tight).
This info is based on what my dermatologist told me several years ago - I had some horrid eczema on insides of my elbows and a patch on my neck. The wet wrapping, oilatum jr. cream and most of all, Elidel cleared it up quickly. I know of several parents who have used Elidel with their children (because it's supposedly for children) and it has worked wonders.

star6 · 06/03/2009 13:42

That almost caused heart failure. If I am pregnant from the ONE time I had sex in the past 5 months then I will scream so loud you will hear me in Scotland.

Ekka - you'll have to tell what you think of the schools - I went to several round here...(actually, I went to lots!...)

jenwa · 06/03/2009 13:54

Oh, can anyone tell me if you get notifications when someone writes/posts a link on the wall on FB??
I changes it so I never got a email as they always were emailing me to tell me someone had commented on a pic, wrote on wall etc and it annoyed me but they dont bring htem up in the notification box that comes up on FB when someone writes on your wall etc!

star Sorry, I was joking, but that would be scary!!!

Marthasmama · 06/03/2009 14:11

Just a flying visit I'll read your posts later when DH is back. I just wanted to confess something. DD is not quite 5 months but has become really interested in food. So yesterday, when DS was eating some steamed carrots with his dinner, I put one on the tray of her high chair. She managed to get it in her mouth but then spat a load out. However she also gagged and looked like she was trying to swallow. She had a huge grin on her face for the whole time. I paniced and took the rest of the bit of carrot away from her as I feel like I did something naughty. I changed two dirty nappies late last night and no sign so I thought none had gone in. However, this afternoon, tiny bits of carrot were present. I don't know whether to be or with myself. I don't think I'll do it again though. Oh the guilt, which is ridiculous considering DS was on solids at 3.5 months on the advice of the HV.

Marthasmama · 06/03/2009 14:12

Sorry about the spelling there, I'm holding a sleeping M and it's hard to type.

Honeymoonmummy · 06/03/2009 14:46

Hi all,

Re the quickest way to groups - I've just noticed a shortcut at the bottom of my screen wtith 2 blue people on it that takes you to groups...I think on the settings it might be a "bookmark" but not sure.

I had a lovely morning with some friends and their babies, will post pics on FB at some point.

I'm off to see the osteopath this afternoon, still not sure what to wear and I'm dreading it, getting really nervous!!! But hey, at least my nipples will be hair-free

Good news re weight MyJob, at least it's going in the right direction! x

Star, I do hope you're not PG for your sake!!!

MM - tut tut

ok well you will all tell me off but I just gave Phoebe baby rice so myjob go for it if it feels right. Phoebe been so interested in food and everything is in her mouth at the mo, When her bottle comes she is grabbing it and pulling it in her mouth and necking it so to speak! She seems to want it sooner aswel now and also has woken last couple of nights, I just thought I would try her with a spoon and gave her a small amount and she opened her mouth straight away and went crazy excited bouncing around in the chair shreiking in delight(which was fab to see but not when too much bouncing + too much eating = sick, although we were lucky as she was not!)
Anyway I tried and she loved it so will go on that way and see how she is over the next few weeks. DD1 had baby rice at 4 months and was fine and really feel dd2 is more of a porker and is really wanting it. Will see what the nappy produces later
