So how is it going for everyone? Most of us have had our babies so how was the first few weeks?

Norash! Great that you are back!

Wow! I just checked out the prenatal thread! Well done Norash, he's a big baby! Hope you are doing well and recover fast!
How is everything going now you are at home?

Misdee - here they recommend to put put almond oil in the bath for babies wiht dry skin. hope her skin improves. I saw the new picutre you put on the members bit, she is really lovely!

3mummy - how is it going with the orange juice? Niklas filled 2 nappies yesterday! The first time since Tuesday!

OK so here is my diary from sat night:-

9/9.15pm finally falls asleep
sleep
1am big feed
sleep
6am small feed
sleep
8.30 small feed
awake
11.45 small feed
sleep
12.15 awake
awake
2pm falls asleep
sleep
4pm feed
awake & asleep in buggy
7.30 sleep
9pm/9.30 asleep
2am big feed
sleep
6am small feed
sleep
8am feed
awake
9.30 sleep
12 feed then sleep (he's sleeping now)

His daytime sleeps have no pattern, it depends a lot on what we are doing, if he in the car or buggy but usually has a long sleep early afternoon. at night he sleeps in his own bed until the early morning wake up then he comes in wiht us.
I definitely find that if he feeds in shorter periods than 4 hours he doesn't feed properly and isn't really hungry just needs attention or is tired. Popsycal keep trying to make Harry wait longer before the next feed. If Niklas gets grumpy or seems hungry before the 4 hours is up I carry him around, and give him a dummy and he's usually really happy. When I have the 4 hour thing working then he often doesn't even cry or seem to be hungry after 4 hours.

Leogaela · 25/04/2005 12:28

Shalaa that's funny! I really thought that I didn't want to have another one, but I am enjoying Niklas so much that I am starting to think about hte best time for the next one too! Dh is 46 so don't want to leave it too long, but want to go back to work for a year before starting to try for the next one.

norash40 · 25/04/2005 12:32

Ok, well here we go.

went into hospital on wednesday 6pm
was induced at around 9.40pm. 2ml prostin
thursday morning no change (cervix intact) 1ml prostin given.
still no changes on thursday evening.

Friday morning and cervix had softened but still closed. 2ml prostin. By now I had had the full dose of prostin and afraid that the induction was not going to work.

Friday night around 8pm and the contractions started. They were coming 3-4 every 10 mins and I was having contractions on top of contractions. Was on gas and air all night, was given pethidine at around 1am and by 9am was 3cm dilated and was transfered to the labour ward.

I asked for an epidural as soon as I got to the labour ward which worked well for the pain most of the time but the pump was faulty so twice I was in really bad pain . Got a fever and was shaking, pulse racing and in all this the baby was just fine (strong boy)

To cut a long story short it was not easy, but I did not expect it to be anyway.

1st stage(from 3cm)- 14hr 30mins
2nd stage - 1hr 31mins
3rd stage - 9mins

Induction to delivery - 3days 3hrs 21mins

Kieran arrived at 0101 and was delivered by forceps, a few scars on the head and face but he is beautiful regardless. He had to have antibioticts therefore 2 more days in hospital. Then he developed jaundice and needed treatment, another two days in hopital.

weight: 4.654kg (10lb 4.5oz)
height: 60cm

I don't know how I would have done all this without my hubby by my side.

Can't wait for next time (despite the extensive stitching)

popsycal · 25/04/2005 12:37

what a birth!!!
feel a little guilty about mine now

shalaa-2 mins after giving birth to ds1 i said i could do that again

OP posts:
norash40 · 25/04/2005 12:38

Why guilty? sorry must have missed it.

popsycal · 25/04/2005 12:39

will find it for you...

bonym · 25/04/2005 12:41

Norash - great to hear from you - congratulations on having Kieran and good to have you back with us .

Leogaela - I think I will try your method of trying to space feeds out more. Sometimes I think Grace is hungry (even though not long since previous feed) but then she messes around on the breast and it still doesn't seem to settle her. I have in fact got her in the sling at the moment - fast asleep!

Shaalaa - can't believe you're planning no. 2 already! We are definitely not having any more - have decided that we are too old now and 2 is enough!

Had a photographer from the Guardian here this morning to take piccies of Grace and me for an article they are running about birth choices. The journalist is someone that Pupuce knows which is how I got involved. My 15mins of fame at last! . Grace was good as gold the whole time which was a relief as she had been a bit grouchy earlier, and low and behold, was grouchy again after he'd left!

Hope everyone else is doing ok today.

popsycal · 25/04/2005 12:41

cut and pasted....it was halfway down my birth announcement thread so you might not have found it

Harry James - sounsd like there are a lot of them about. Harry is after my lovely grandad who unfortunately wasn't alive long enough to meet baby.

Well - the birth was actually even a bit quicker than Peckarollever said!!

From about 1:30 am I woke with a sore tummy. went back to sleep. Woke afew more times then woke proper ay 5:45 and told dh it might be starting. Started getting perio dcramps and thought it might be starting and oday might be the day. Got more regular so rang parents around 6:20 to ask them to watch ds. Rang hospotal but they said to wait until they were a bit closer and to ring back.

Mum texted me at 6:45 to say they had set off (15 minute journey on a good day). Gave ds his brekkie and started hurtng more.....but still didnt realise how bad lol.
Parents arrived around 7 and had a abd pain so rang hospitsl who said to come in.

Got in car and had big contraction. Started hurting more. Dh drove a 15 minute journey in 5 mins. Got to front door of maternity unit and I couldn't move. Dh grabbed a wheel chair, whizzed me along the corridor. Greeted by midwife and shown into the assessment room. She asked if I need the loo and I reposnded by my waters breaking, her telling me to get my pants off. Quickly followed by her saying she could see the head and I needed to push. Harry was born in two pushes at 7:21 to the screams of "F**k I need some drugs". The paracetomol I took at 6:45 didn't quite cut it! 8lbs 11oz!!!

It has tajen me 3 times as long to type this as it did to give birth as Ds is here with me on cbeebies. DS1 that is!

We are happy and pleased it is over!

norash40 · 25/04/2005 12:45

Oh my God that is so cool. I only wish.

Maybe next time iot will be better.

Leogaela · 25/04/2005 12:46

Oh Norash! I can't believe they kept you going for a natural birth for so long! Wow! You are amazing (and your dh for giving you the support you needed)! the start sounds similar to what happened to my cousin but she had a cs at the doctor's suggestion after 6 hours of contractions. Its amazing how tall kieran is, Niklas was born 48cm (but me & dh are both shorties). Nature is amazing! Congratulations again!

Funnily enough yours is the first birth story that has made me feel envious that I had to have a cs and not a natural birth!

norash40 · 25/04/2005 12:47

Thanks Leogaela and bonym. It is nice to be back.

norash40 · 25/04/2005 12:52

He is so big people don't believe that he is only 2 weeks old and they find it even harder to believe that I had a natural birth.

Funny you should mention cs, as as soon as they told me to push I started asking for one. It was too late though ], until then it was not too bad as I took any form of pain relief that they offered me. Even asking for some that were not offered and could not be given hehehehehe .

3mummy · 25/04/2005 21:51

Hi Norash, sorry to hear you had a rough time of it - maybe it'll be better next time !!

Leogaela - The orange juice doesn't seem to do much I'm afraid . Faith has managed one poo, which was on Friday, and she still spends much of her time straining, so I shall be seeing HV tomorrow.

I am finding it so hard to get on here and type at all!! DH back at work again tomorrow for another 4 days, so the chaos that is 3 girls will descend on me with full force once again in the morning. I'm looking forward to the day when the 4 of us go shopping together while Daddy's at work!!!

Bye for now ladies

misdee · 25/04/2005 21:54

popsycal, hows you going with the breastfeeding? i think your Harry has overtakenb serena weight wise, last time she was weighed (3weeks ago??) she was 9lb 14oz. i really want to post a pic of her with big hair but my camera batteries are dead. grrrrrrr!!

norash40 · 25/04/2005 22:59

thanks 3mummy

3mummy · 26/04/2005 09:47

Hi all, I have done the school & nursery run and Faith is asleep in her car seat, so I thought I'd catch a few (very addictive!) moments on here .

HV is coming at lunchtime to weigh Faith, she will be 6wks old tomorrow!! The last time she was weighed was 2wks ago andshe was 8lb 1oz, so she had been putting on about an oz a day since birth . I do think she's still gaining well as she fits some of her clothes now .

I also have a "health check" appointment with my DD1 at her school with the school nurse - what is that all about??? Apparently they get weighed and measured and they like a parent to be there for the first one then they will continue to monitor her health throughout her school life and let me know how she's getting on. I thought they'd got rid of school nurses after I left school. Anyone else had this kind of thing?

We had a really good night last night with Faith, althought she had colic all evening and cried virtually non stop (had to pop out and get gripe water - most effective!! ), I put her in her cot at 11pm and although she grizzled a little - and still straining(!!), she went off to sleep and woke at 5:30 for first feed! I am relieved, as DH got up for work at 4am and I really thought him shuffling round the bedroom would wake her, but it didn't!

Anyway I'm off for a walk up to school to see the nurse - think she'll check me for nits!? - Ooooh, remember those days?

popsycal · 26/04/2005 09:57

hi girls

misdee - nice to hear from you....a week gone monday, harry had his 6 week check and was 10lb 7oz but that was a week ago...so my guess is he will be about 11lb now...will email you a photo.

We have had a few really unsettled nights and I am starting to feel the lack of sleep now. Feeding is going great and I am trying to express (not with a great deal of success) so that dh can help out a bit.

DS1 is at my mams today so me and harry were going to have a lazy day then pop to a breastfeeding group this aftermoon.....BUT! DH's friend rang last night to see if we had remembered he was coming up today to stay for two days while he has work up here. DH hadn't even told me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The spare room is unusable...piles of clothes, thick of dust.......thankfully DH is taking half days leave. If Harry sleeps I can get plenty done but it is touch and go lol!!!!

argh

3mummy - just a suggestion for Faith - my DS did better with Apple juice for constipation OJ did help him much. Might be worth a go? (if you'll excuse the pun!) good luck

3mummy · 26/04/2005 12:34

Hi Norash, I took Faith out her first day, we got home 6pm and popped straight round my Dads. Then did school run the next day. But that was to show her off really!!

I must admit though I didn't get out that soon with my last two, I had lots of stitches and waited til I'd healed and felt more comfortable. The cord usually drops off with in the first week. If I were you I'd take things easy - let everyone come to you !

3mummy · 26/04/2005 12:36

Thanx Harrizeb - will try that today. She did poo this morning, but not very much and she's still straining .

norash40 · 26/04/2005 12:44

Hey 3mummy having problems?

norash40 · 26/04/2005 12:49

Kierans code fell off this morning.

I have been out a few times but I have not taken him out with me.

ZoeC · 26/04/2005 14:16

Norash - congrats on your birth and finally graduating

Popsy - nightmare, hope you get sorted in time and the visit is short

Got the hv round to weigh dd2 tomorrow - she was 10lb 8oz but that was nearly 12 days now so I'm guessing well over 11 pounds now (she'd nearly gained a pound the following week).

I did make a note of our day, it's a bit long and more random than even I'd realised so I'm not doing another - it'll just depress me!

6.55 feed
7.15 - 7.45 sleep
8.15 feed
9-9.30am sleep, feed back to sleep 9.35-9.45
10.15-10.45 finally asleep again in wilkinet
11.20 feed
12.40 feed
all afternoon alternatively feed/sleep as should have been asleep and kept waking - 20 mins sleep, then feed, etc. until:
3.00pm - 4.10 sleep
4.10 feed
4.20 - 7pm sleep
7pm - 9pm feed off and on, dozy in between
9pm - 10.15pm sleep
10.15 feed
10.50 sleep for night: feeding at 12.10, 1.50, 3.00, 5.15, 7am and 8.10 (got up then).

Think it was worse than usual for some reason at night - I'm sure we were down to a late (11/12) feed then 3 and 6 ish before the 8am wake up. We have no proper bedtime for her yet - she goes to bed when we do, but I may try to implement a proper bedtime routine for her soonish.

No wonder I'm tired, all those feeds - hope it settles down into something more sensible soon. Dd1 was on formula so we had a more structured day by now.
