had a lovely day today my grandma won the regional final of grandparent of the year 2009, we got taken to a swanky restaurant and had lots of nice prezzies

buzzybee · 07/03/2009 04:19

Speaking of parenting books does anyone have a good recommendation for one aimed at older children and more specifically girls aged about 8 and up? Am worried that the tried and trusted tactics of threatening an early bed with DD1 won't work for much longer and we seem to be rapidly heading towards truculent teenager some days!! For example, she frequently ignores me when I ask her a question - even quite innocuous things, it can drive me a bit barmy.

Clairey I don't think my advice would be much use to you as it sounds like we're very different in our approaches. I'm absolutely paranoid about NOT doing things like taking DD into bed with for fear of setting up hard to break routines/expectations (except when she's obviously unwell). I did do CC with her when she was younger and even now don't go into her if she cries in the night unless the crying lasts more than about 1 minute. I just decided I needed to a bit selfish about the whole sleeping thing with being on my own and all. On the whole its worked and that's despite DD being an extremely light sleeper who is quite easily woken by something like a heavy rain shower. So we do have quite a few broken nights but generally I get up at most 3 times and then only for 5 mins at the most as she seems to understand that I'm not going to get her up and am only coming in to provide reassurance and to help her out an awkward possie in the corner of the cot if necessary. Very occasionally I will give her some Pamol if I know that she's teething.

Hi all! Back again for now, had no internet or phone lines for a few days and its surprising how quickly you get out of the habit of using the computer!

Clara and Louise, I really do think talking about things helps you with depression and anxiety. When I was feeling particularly low last year my HV referred me to a link worker who I met a couple of times for a chat. She said my main problems were low self-esteem, OCD and a touch of anxiety thrown in for good measure but did not think I needed any ADs (neither did I). Just being reassured that what I was feeling was normal was enough to make me feel steadier IYKWIM? My score on the PND test thingy was high but I think because I am aware of it and aware of where my problems lie, I can keep myself in check - if I start to slide again I will go back to HV.

Congrats to you DrSkid!!!!!!!!!!

Hi to everyone else too and all your little ones! Hope your shingles is clearing up Arcadie and not too itchy!

Evie is doing really well although she has had awful nappies for a couple of weeks now, really stinky and a bit loose, she's happy in herself though so am not too worried but I have put her MMR off for a couple of weeks so she will hopefully be nice and healthy by the time she has it. She is getting so cute too - we were singing Row Row Row your Boat yesterday and when I finished singing she started singing "Rowrowrowrowrow", when I asked her if she was singing Row Row she said "Ses" and nodded! She's just yummy!

Arcadie · 07/03/2009 18:54

Hey beckle long time no post... missed you

becklespeckle · 08/03/2009 11:34

Mwhahhh!

cazzybabs · 08/03/2009 11:37

beckle...snap nappies with my Evie...loose but not ill (poor nursery )

BouncingTurtle · 08/03/2009 11:39

Yes, ds has had a few loose nappies lately - but he is full of cold as are the rest of us! We are now referring to him as the snot monster! Feel sorry for nursery as all the babies have streaming noses, they wipe them one after the other, by the time they've wiped the last nose, the first one needs doing again, according to one baby room worker!!

insywinsyspider · 08/03/2009 20:43

clairey - bw worked for us when ds's were small so its kind of the first on I pick up, PU/PD does now wind ds2 up more - i think she describes 'types' of babies and both of mine are spirited so their main problem is they can't wind down/settle to sleep, looked at Ferber and didn't do CC but found his info on sleep associations helped, cut ds1 milk at bedtime, completely blacked out ds2's room and gave him cuddly toy and seem to be back to them going back to sleep in night rather than ds1 coming to us and ds2 screaming... sh*t I think I might have jinxed it by saying that its so hard to know what would work though and its hard work putting new thing in place those extra nights of realy really crap sleep make you want to revert back!

buzzy - no recommendations on books for older ones I'm afraid, no where near that stage

arcadie - df (although called bump a foetus seems weird!) doing ok, am looking huge which is pretty rubbish as people think I'm further along than I am and worried am going to have massive baby, how are you feeling?

drskid - also sympathy about not being able to go out, we had this on Fri, my day off, ds2 threw up all over me when I picked him up from nursery Thurs eve, nursery nurse changed him, I had to do with a mop up and stank the whole way home, gross, so didn't go to playgroup on Fri just in case, ds2 fine and ds1 seriously did my head in going stir crazy at home, ended up out for lunch just to get out, dh then cross I'm spent the money hope ds better soon

its diy crazy here, getting ready for baby, on sat looked at new carpet for the 2 kids rooms, found mega cheap place and ended up buying them to be fitted tomorrow, eekk whole house is a diaster zone as boys rooms got to be emptied tomorrow am before dh goes to work, hoping everything will be finished soon as hate living like this - especially, as said before, when stuck at home

becklespeckle · 08/03/2009 23:24

Lucky you Arcadie and BT, I get the nasty stinky job pleasure of all DD's putrid bad nappies at the moment - I do snigger to myself when she does them for DH when I'm at work though!

Insy big bump doesn't always mean big baby, could be carrying a lot of water! Big babies aren't too bad to deliver though - trust me, I've had 3!

Evie seems to be resisting going to bed at the moment, not sure if it is just a way of pushing boundaries or whether there is something up. She just wouldn't settle last night whether I was holding her or not so tonight I made the decision to try CC on her so she doesn't get used to being fussed over when she cries. She went to sleep in about 5 mins but with the odd scream thrown in. She has also decided she doesn't like being cuddled to sleep in the daytime anymore but will happily go off to sleep by herself in her cot!

BouncingTurtle · 09/03/2009 07:30

Beckle - Daniel will go off to sleep by himself in the buggy during the day, and sometimes in his cot.
Last night he woke up at 10.30, fed him, cuddle him but every time I tried putting him back in his cot he cried, very upset. I think he had a bad dream poor love, because I eventually brought him into our room, laid him on the bed and he was quiet. Got in and spooned up behind him and he went straight to sleep! He did wake up at 2pm and was snacking for about half an hour. But then he slept through to 6:30.
I must confess to wishing we co-slept all the time, as I hat getting out of bed to see to him, and he is so very cuddly too But it can be uncomfortable as our bed is fairly narrow.

Amani · 09/03/2009 08:54

Justa quick query for me - anyone else LO started to guzzle down milk at night - my DD wakes up 3 times and has 9 oz each time! Only just started, but her appitite has also improved as well. Do you think she might be making up for all those months she wasn't feeding well?

insywinsyspider · 09/03/2009 20:09

beckle - hoping not too big baby, ds2 was 8lb 3oz, that was ok just don't want one too big as got some really cute newborn clothes that need a final (maybe!?) airing
ds2 has periods of not settling well usually when has major developmental change like walking or most worrying was starting nursery and me going back to work, made me feel like we caused it, only way I could keep him quite and chilled was sitting next to cot stroking his back till he went to sleep, hope dd gets back into 'routine' soon

amani - not much help on milk front, ds2 still sicky, can they get sick from teething?? as running out of options if not... anyway he's having watered down milk before bed and can just about tolerate it, maybe dd having a growth spurt or is she suddenly more active?

mememummy · 10/03/2009 14:13
