yeah one breast at a time is the "recommended" way to feed but sometimes it is necessary to break the rules.
creamy separating milk contains both fore and hind milk and the more watery looking stuff (your 2.5oz) is fore milk only.
think of full cream milk (high in calories)- got a layer of cream on top yeah? skimmed milk (very low fat) = no creamy layer.
if baby is a lazy, slow feeder then they may only take foremilk then slow or stop, getting very little or no hind milk at most feeds. hence, the need to offer only hind milk (ie last breast they fed on) at the beginning of a feed so they have the energy to suck and get guaranteed high calorie milk.
Does this make sense? I know what i mean but just want to check i'm explaining it clearly??

daisyandbabybootoo · 21/07/2007 22:40

I think so, it's just knowing when they've had enough. Sometimes she sucks for ages, but shortly afterwards seems hungry again

daisyandbabybootoo · 21/07/2007 22:42

she won't settle tonight at all, and has been grazing since we got home at 7:15.

She seems to be asleep now, so I'm off to try and get some kip.

Have a good night xx

TALLULAHBELLE · 21/07/2007 22:47

Yes - makes sense. I guess you just wonder how do you know that they are getting it all. Can you say approx how many mins of sucking to get to the hindmilk or does it depend on the individual ? Is that a silly qu ?

daisyandbabybootoo · 21/07/2007 23:00

i think there's some good info on kellymom on this tallulah.

defo off to bed now....good night xx

TALLULAHBELLE · 21/07/2007 23:12

Cheers - will look tomorrow. Sleep well (as if ).

bumperlicious · 22/07/2007 08:14

Morning girls, just finished HP! Went to visit the in laws yesterday and were lucky to get back because of the floods! Envisioned having to spend the night in the car with DD!

Did a little bit of shopping though and bought a lovely dress from H&M and some comfy brown linen trousers (which will never be ironed!). All the clothes that I have bought in the past month have ranged from size 10-size 16

Tried to "resume relations" with DH last night - fucking ouch! Felt like something was tearing Think I may be broken forever "down there".

derlor · 22/07/2007 11:52

Tallulah i'm crap at explaining things when i have to write them down!!! i've taken Daisy's advice and looked on Kellymom - here is what i'm trying to tell you but described in a much clearer way this and this hope these links help.

derlor · 22/07/2007 11:56

hey Bumper - it will get better, just give it time
i can't believe the awful flooding you are being affected by down there, it's weird to see it on the news when it's lovely and sunny here - it's so unfair for any of you struggling at the mo with water issues.
anyone heard from Natty, Catkin, Seansgirl or Dogus recently?? where have they gone?

foxybrown · 22/07/2007 12:15

morning everyone! Hope you are all well.

Can't hang around for long, thanks to Annobal and her Fat Face sale link .... must go and buy some pretty things....

What would we do without our Derlor? Top tip about putting a twist in your bra strap too.

foxybrown · 22/07/2007 14:35

Blimey its quiet here today!

Jamantha · 22/07/2007 15:52

Well, don't know about everyone else, but we've just been out for a 2 hour walk.

justbeme · 22/07/2007 18:23

Hi - i wasnt given any advice re bf - ive been giving lo both boobs unless she falls asleep - and then when she wakes up giving her the other one! she didnt lose any birth weight tho so must be ok.

the last 2 nights shes started crying at 2330 - the first night it went on until 0230ish and last night i cant remember what time - but when i woke up she was across dps chest fast asleep - so ive out her on infracol as she wouldnt even go on my boob so thought maybe it was colic.

she just wants to be held all the time or feeding - i dont remember this with dd1.

daisyandbabybootoo · 22/07/2007 19:01

Helllloooooo.

It is quiet here isn't it.

Been spending quality time with DS today....we went swimming this morning and had a great time. I think he really benefitted from some time with just me (DH at home with babyboo and some EBM)

Popped back to Next this afternoon as well and got a pair of jeans for a tenner and the loveliest most comfy pair of linen-mix combat trousers for twelve quid. Yay...now I don't need to wear maternity trousers any more (although my maternity jeans and combats don't look maternity and are very comfy still)

daisyandbabybootoo · 22/07/2007 19:02

DD was a bit like that between a week and two weeks, JBM, but she settled down a bit after that.

justbeme · 22/07/2007 19:05

oh i look forward to that then daisy!
typin 1 handed
have 2 go and check dinner now

daisyandbabybootoo · 22/07/2007 20:00

where is everybody????

justbeme · 22/07/2007 20:10

just had dinner - Lo been asleep in her pram for last hour - cant believe it!

The rats are back in my garden - saw one climbing up the bird table - we've put poison down again

foxybrown · 22/07/2007 20:11

Evening.

Sat here ready to type, but realised I have nothing to say! Best part of a week and a half spent holding and feeding a lo and not much else.

Suppose I really should get out more!

Good to hear you had quality time with MRR, Daisy. Makes a difference, doesn't it? (Although I am still maintaining that my DCs rotten behaviour has nothing to do with their new sis!)

DS1 used the word 'frickin' today. Am not quite sure how bad it is. Anyway, I made him repeat it infront of his dad - and then blamed DP for swearing in front of him. I think I proved my point!

foxybrown · 22/07/2007 20:14

Eurgh! Rats - my neighbour has started a compost heap next to our fence at the top of the garden, near her backdoor. Am sure it will encourage an infestation.

justbeme · 22/07/2007 20:19

Hows it going Foxy?? and tell me - whats your routine like?? (I havent got one but am interested)
I noticed you said earlier that you wake your Lo up for a feed - I dont think i'd be able to wake mine up or if I did she'd fall asleep within 2 mins of going on the boob.

annobal · 22/07/2007 20:21

Evening all!

Foxy, did you buy from Fat Face?

Another question for Derlor or anyone else out there in the know - how do you know when your breast is empty? I can always squeeze some out

Hope everyone had a good day. DS3 has been asleep for most of the day, just waking for feeds (no amount of coaxing would wake him) so he's either having a growth spurt so will sleep well tonight OR be awake all night! Who knows!!!!

annobal · 22/07/2007 20:22

euuww rats - we haven't had any sign of them coming back.....yet!

justbeme · 22/07/2007 20:26

i know ..rats - they were climbing up the hedge and then onto the bird table - i dont want to keep my patio door open now.

Lol at squeeze some out annobal - i get all queazy trying to squeeze - i tried the pump the other day and gave up after 3 pumps when i saw my nipple extend!!

Yesterday i had awful engorgement in 1 boob - but after using the heated up microwave oat thingy on it and massage and nipple shields ive managed to sort it out.

annobal · 22/07/2007 20:27

LOL at nipple extend - it is pretty gross isn't it...
