Good luck today DH, hope the weather's better than it is here!

6oz? Wow, I just expressed 5!! I got a feed (almost!!)

Now next question - I've got the bags for freezing it. Can I refridgerate this batch and express again this afternoon, add it to the refridgerated batch and then freeze the lot so it's one full feed? Or do you have to freeze straightaway/keep the batches separate?

vinorouge · 05/07/2007 09:32

my hv told me a good BF is equiv to 6is oz

2Happy · 05/07/2007 09:33

Aw, happy half-birthday Zach!

This time about a year and a half ago I first joined MN and started my first ever thread. Guess what it was about? Trying to manage weaning and returning to work

2Happy · 05/07/2007 09:33

OK will try and get one more ounce.

Thanks guys

Wilkie · 05/07/2007 09:35

I would freeze straightaway 2H xx

Wilkie · 05/07/2007 09:35

Congratulations on your excellent udders BTW

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 09:37

2happy you can add to it later on yes. As long as you only add to it today it's fine. You can then freeze.

2Happy · 05/07/2007 09:38

Nope, am empty. Do hope I make a bit more by the time ds2 wants a feed!

Thank you Wilkie! I am a bit worried they're going to round me up too the next time they get the cows in up the farm!

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 09:40

www.kellymom.com/newman/27expressing_milk.html info on expressing and storage times.

Wilkie · 05/07/2007 09:42

Listen to Jodie - my boobs closed for business a looooooonnnnggggg time ago

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 09:43

www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/milkstorage.html seems like eve adding different days pumping together is fine

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 09:46

Guess I'll have to learn all this if I'm going to be a bf counsellor Have to get accepted first though hehe.

theUrbanDryad · 05/07/2007 09:48

Wilkie - dh has now decided the pain isn't in his bollock, it's above it so he reckons he's pulled a muscle god knows how though!!

2Happy · 05/07/2007 09:54

Thanks, Jodie, I forgot about Kellymom (stupid emoticon).

I think I might print off some of that info for the CM (like the not shaking, and how long to store after thawing etc) really useful info. Loved the way they tell you how to guesstimate how much the baby would need per feed (divide 25oz by the number of feeds per day). They tell you a different way to express than the woman siad last night though - she said express one side until it slows, swap to the other side until it slows, swap again. But Kellymom says express one side until it's dry then swap and that's it. I would have thought the Kellymom way would be better - surely the other way you'd end up getting more fore and less hindmilk, but I really trust the woman she knows her stuff Confused.

However, am stupidly chuffed at that, it came out so easily, 5oz just like that. Why did it not work with ds1??? (well ok I have now been bfeeding for 20 of the last 24 months, that might have something to do with it ) Did you know in America they will buy breast milk to put in their breast milk banks (which they then sell to SCBUs for prem babies)?

theUrbanDryad · 05/07/2007 09:56

in this country, breastmilk banks were stopped because what is in one mother's bm might not be good for another baby. tis why wet nursing isn't encouraged either.

well, that's what my mw told me anyway!

2Happy · 05/07/2007 09:56

Ooh, looks like it's nearly time for a new thread!

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 09:57

I would definitely express from one side at a time, I always have done just the same way I feed from one side at a time. Expressing the other way seems the same as feeding for 10 mins a side which means too much foremilk as you said.

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 09:58

UD - I thought there were still bf banks in hospitals? They sterilise the milk anyway from what I've read.

2Happy · 05/07/2007 09:58

I'm sure that's true, UD, because your milk adjusts to the needs of your baby. But according to the woman last night, bmilk contains somethine that prevents "necrotising enterocolitis" (how posh do I sound?!) which very prem babies are prone to (I think Abby and Luka's baby might have had that on ER ) and that's why they are liking it. But I would have thought that someone expressing who has, say, a 6m old's milk would be very different from that needed by a baby born at like 28 weeks.

Jodie - when do you hear if you've been accepted?

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 10:12

2happy - I need to write my forms out first, need to write about my pregnanies, births and breastfeeding experiences which will take a while so I'm going to sit down at the weekend and get it all done. Need dh to take the children out so I can get some quiet to concentrate in really. I've got the reference forms done so once I'm finished I just need to post them off. They only accept 4 women a month so I may be too late for this month already.

Dragonhart · 05/07/2007 11:20

DH's interview went really well wilkie. It is a double promotion so not sure if they will give it to him as they said that it was a case of raw talent over experience (dh had no production experience). He has another interview for a job he is much more likely to get a week on monday when we get back from ils. That is better hours as it is 3 12hour shifts per week then an extra day per month. The other job is nights so wouldnt be as good but pay is much bigger cos of the shift sppliment. They are both st

2Happy, well done on the expressing. I was hopless at it with Luke so wasnt sure whether to try, but might give it a go for when I am weaning her.

EAH Congratulations!

How'd you manage to double post that with a 50 minute gap??!! Glad the interview went well.

Think I may have got carried away with the expressing. ds2 not a happy chappy

Dragonhart · 05/07/2007 12:16

Luke did it! Too busy packing to see what he was doing!

Oh dear 2happy!

JodieG1 · 05/07/2007 12:46

2happy you'll still have milk for him as the more you express or feed the more you produce and your body produces milk the fastest when it is being removed.
