catgirl I hear you loud and clear and I am in fact going to but some formula today.
Mellin I expressed 2 oz this morning. Felt very pleased with myself. Gace it ti lo and he guzzled it all very quickly paused for a second and wailed for more please? He will be 5 weeks old tommorrow already. BF is getting me down but then I think of ds3 who was formula fed and theres nowt wrong with him I can tell you.
I hate to do this to Edward but Im not a happy puppy anymore and its killing me. Anyway rant over lo is crying yet again. Take care. Oh and Pizza Express sounds good in London atlaeast I know where that is.

taffy101 · 27/11/2006 15:34

re expressing milk -i was hopeless with dd 3 years ago i was always struggling to get enough milk for her even without expressing, so rarely bothered - only for when was going out and mil babysitting (not a hectic social calendar, prob went out twice!!)
Seem to have more to spare this time with ds but have only bothered to do two bottles so far. Can't quite decide best time of day to express, prob morning between feeds, but is like spending whole morning as a milk machine. Also boobs feel like going to explode when the expressed milk is being used and I miss giving the feed myself iyswim.

I am also amazed how LO changing already. He has a proper receeding hairline atm so looks like a little old man. Am v sad that his lovely soft hair is disappearing! DDs didn't fall out she was born with black hair and gradually developed blonde roots - weird - she's always had loads of hair. Wonder what colour LOs hair will end up - is dark brown atm

nicand2 · 27/11/2006 15:35

Youngmum - Yes night times sound very good. My Lo is 5 weeks and up until Saturday was going 10 - 1 going back down at 2ish then waking again at 4 and then about 5 - 8 so 2 night feeds at least. He has just started doing feeds at 10,3 and 6 so I'm getting a bit more sleep but strangely today I feel much more tired.

Gingeme - I think you have done really well with the breastfeeding to keep going this long. I gave up after 6 days because I was feeling unhappy about it (v painful, feeding all the time etc) and I decided that b feeding was no good for lo if his mummy was unhappy much better to have a happy mummy and a bottle.

Feel so tired today and we're moving house a week on Friday and we are so un orgnised haven't even thought about Christmas. On the plus side DS1 has just got the hang of a postman pat jigsaw we have been trying to master all summer - it's lovely and so worth it when they do things for the first time.

Mellin · 27/11/2006 15:47

Gingeme are you thinking of doing mixed feedings or swapping to formula only? I am contemplating giving the midge formula for last evening feed in the hope she might sleep for a longer stretch at night cos I am knackered. But then I read on Mumsnet you get problems with your bf supply diminshing...... Arrghh it's all so bloody hard!

On the upside I love her to bits and she is gorgeous and still smells so good (even covered in milk sick). Just wish I was more awake and alert to enjoy her!

jmcmugwump · 27/11/2006 19:36

6 week check up today - and Ellie has finally started to put on weight - she is now 9lbs6oz and I am very proud of my boobs as they now appear to be working properly - bloody hard work but perseverance finally seems to be paying off. Managed to express 2.5- 3oz this am so have put it in the freezer and and hoping to really build the supply up I still cannot believe this whole bfing lark is so damn complicated! E has been having the odd bottle feed a couple of times, maybe 3 times a week and I try to usually give her ebm, but if none available will give her formula - I must say she seems to have none of these nipple confusion problems - maybe I am lucky or maybe the HV's are just trying to scare us all into not using bottles - I am sure there is some sort of conspiracy!

She is currenly gurgling at a Regional Current Affairs program - I might have to moderate her TV viewing, but she seems quite happy - I took her into work today for 2 hours (didn't intend to sty that long) and they all adore her - ah doesn't it warm the cockles of your heart

Gingeme · 27/11/2006 19:42

Mellin I have been exclusively bf up till now. Just made up 4 bottles and am going to give lo a bottle before bed tonight. If he likes it and sleeps well Im goign to give him formula all the time. One feed at a time. Anywya hes yelling now so better get on with it. Have a good night. x

totallyfloaty35 · 27/11/2006 21:02

Gingeme,be careful going straight onto formula as its hell on the boobs, they get really engorged and you can end up with mastitis.Try a couple of formula feeds a day at first its easier. With 2nd DD ,breast feeding was agony so gave it up after 2 wks and i did it suddenly and ended up with mastitis in both boobs.
My other DDs were fine on formula and i have to say its easier to get into a routine using it.I plan to carry on BF for a bit though as i find it a great diet aid and with xmas coming im gonna need all the calorie burners i can getcant see me doing it til LO is 6 months old though,to stressful and i feel like i cant do anything without taking my baby with me,i miss leaving DH in charge of feeds for the day

Gingeme · 27/11/2006 22:10

I hear ya totaly. Just gave him 4ozs with a couple of mammoth burps in between. He polished it all off then turned to me as if to say'more'!. He then did a thunderous fart and is now laying quietly in his cot. I bf ds3 for 4 weeks then ff straight away and I felt and looked as if Id had breast implants for a few days so yes Im going to do it one feed at a time this time and make a better bed time routine for him from now on too. My parents are coming down this weekend so Im going to suggest they babysit for an hour or so just so dh and I can go out with no kids in tow. Wow cant remember last time we did that. Well heres wishing you all goodnight.

PelvicDoors · 28/11/2006 07:32

OK. Who can do the Pizza Express just off Oxford st on Monday 11th December?

Thought we needed to make a decision one way or the other....

Marthahm - sheepskins contain levels of naturally occurring arsenic which the lambs/sheep get from the food they eat. Organic ones are apparantly OK. They found this out because New Zealand has highest rates of SIDS in the world and all babies over there used to be put on sheepskins. if you type in Stop SIDS now Sheepskins into a search engine you get the info. The risk of SIDS drops by more than 90% once babies reach 4 months so I guess fine to use non-organic sheepskins after that.

Gingeme · 28/11/2006 09:32

Ill check my dh shifts and let you know. lo settled a bit better after his bottle last night. Felt weird going to sleep without hhim laying with me thus resulting in a realy horrible dream that I lost all my children and was panicking running around trying to find them. lo woke about 3.30 and I gave him a bf. Which he slept till about 6.30. Gonna give him another ff soon and another one tonight. Anyway hope you ladies have a good day and don't get too wet in the rain. xxx

pmoore · 28/11/2006 09:49

Feeling a bit lost this morning- I've decided that LO should sleep in her cot during the day instead of in my arms! So I've got the baby monitor on with a cup of coffee- watching home birth diaries

Really need to go shopping but the weather is awful. Anyone know where I can get a raincover for the car seat?

Was talking to DP about next baby and to get my desired 18 month age gap need to start trying again in July seems not that far away! And I don't want to ever carry thru summer again.

Sorry am rambling today...........have a nice day all.

pmoore · 28/11/2006 09:51

Re. meet up I am free on that day and Oxford Street is much more accessible for me- wonder how I'll cope with the tube!

totallyfloaty35 · 28/11/2006 10:19

pmoor,mothercare do universal raincovers,they cost about £8

Gingeme · 28/11/2006 11:02

pmoore Ethal Austen sell universal ones. Weve got one for ours and its a very good fit. Cost us £2.99. lo had another bottle at 9.30. Guzzled it again but was a little bit sick after. Im well impressed with the burps hes been doing though. Would make his Daddy proud. So next feed will be a bf and they sure are ready. Ive had to change my breast pads 3 times already.

totallyfloaty35 · 28/11/2006 11:23

why is it that as soon as i put on a re-usable nappy,my baby does a massive poo,one of those ones that can not be contained!?Its a nightmare trying to clean them off towelling and the liner just disolves.
LO has her 6wk chek this afternoon, will finally find out how long she is.
Well off to do xmas shop, what do you buy for the 8yr old who wants everything

MadamePlatypus · 28/11/2006 12:17

Those of you who are expressing, what kind of pump are you using? I have an Avent manual pump from last time, but got a Medela electric pump (sp?) this time thinking it would be easier, but the one time I tried it I didn't think it was much better.

Anyway, I have been inspired by this thread to give this expressing thing another go. Atleast it will mean I can confidently hand Dd over to somebody else for half an hour. Compared to DS she is much more unsettled (DS was happy as long as he was feeding and he could feed pretty much 12 hours a day). Everybody else hands her back to me 'for a feed' after about 2 minutes when in fact she is just feeling a bit uncomfortable. I may have boobs, but if DD isn't hungry they don't have magic powers!

nicand2 · 28/11/2006 13:16

HV has just been and lo is now weighing 13lb 1oz but she's suggested trying sma white for hungry babies as he's still feeding every 2- 3 hours maximum and last night went back to waking up every 2 hours. Has anyone had any experience of using this??

Gingeme · 28/11/2006 13:30

nicand2 I used SMAgold with ds1. Mind you I was mix feeding but ended up giving it to him full time in the end. Hes now 12 and big and strong and healthy. Im currently using Cow and Gate Comfort for comfortable digestion and ds4 has been asleep for 2 hours now which he has never done. Even stayed asleep when I put him in his sling to pick ds3 up from nursery. Feel better now he seems alot more satisfied as far as feeding is concerned.

catgirl · 28/11/2006 14:15

hi - feeling better after venting yesterday (thanks Gingeme for 'hearing' me). Was in a grotty mood yesterday anyway, so lack of bf support put the tin hat on it all. Better today! ds2 had a good feed from left side this morning, rotten from right. He has had bottles since then, so next feed, once he wakes will be breast - should be ready by then! And right one should not be sore anymore .

Can't do 11th, but have a great meet up and I will hopefully make the next one.

Think SMA white just takes longer to digest, therefore leaving them fuller feeling for longer.... I think.... happy to stand corrected.

DS2 is 6 weeks today - guess it is another 'growth spurt' time isn't it? Have 6 week check on Thursday.

Hope all you lovely ladies are having a good day today.

pmoore · 28/11/2006 14:40

My understanding is exactly of what catgirl suggests- the SMA thing- all to do with the ratio of cassien and whey I think. Anyway thats all technical. I swapped Samantha to hungrier baby food last week. Watch out for constipation though not nice but once your over that, LO was much more satisfied and I have had 6 nights of sleeping at least 8 hours. LO didn't get on with SMA White so I swapped to Cow & Gate (Plus)- we seem to have settled now.

youngmum21 · 28/11/2006 16:05

hi all,

Well las nite was fun lo seems to be be really colicy at nite and wont settle after her 10 pm feed she just screams so have to put her in her car set till she falls asleep then try and move her in to her crib eith out her waking!!!

Me and dp are finding it hard with the lack of sleep and keep falling out he actually left and went for a drive last nite and left me with the screaming lo the slept on the sofa !!! men!!!

Hv came yesterday and lo now weighs 8lb 7oz cant believe how big she getting and she only 16days old she changing so much!!!

BENDYB · 28/11/2006 16:16

sorry 2 hear ur having trouble at nite youngmum, have u tried infacol? my lo gets really colicky around 5 or 6 & screams 4 ages! Infacol does seem 2 have improved it & so does layin him on his tummy & rubbing his back.
sorry 2 hear bout ur dp aswell! men eh?

I also cant believe how quick they change! was looking at his newborn photos & he looks so different now! He is gettin so big! Cant wait 2 c what he weighs, HV coming thur. He weighed 8.12 last time so he must b over 9 pounds now!
He will b 4weeks old on fri, the time is flying by! Its scary!

youngmum21 · 28/11/2006 16:24

hi bendy,

Yeah we are using infacol with every feed she fine during the day and she burbs so much im not sure why she so unsettled with it!!!
I dont blame dp we both so tired we just snap at each other and it so horrible when nothing you do seems gud enough for you lo and they just scream, we sorted things out anyway and after lo finally went to sleep at 11.30 she didnt wake till 5.30 had a feed then went back to sleep until 8.30!!!

BENDYB · 28/11/2006 16:35

I dunno what else u could try then, maybe some1 else knows? I'd be interested 2 know if there anything else I can do 2 help my lo, its so upsetting when they just screaming & screaming isn't it? What formula r you using? We changed ours when he 1st started getting colic & that helped a bit aswell, so maybe thats an idea.
He's still so good at nite though so we are lucky! Normally goes 2 sleep bout half 8 then wakes up at 5 then back 2 sleep from bout 6 till 9. ur lo seems good at nite though aswell, at least she's not screaming all nite!

youngmum21 · 28/11/2006 16:39

well my hv sed to sit her in her car seat or bouncing chair for half an hour after her feeds so am going to try that out from now on!!!

We are using sma gold at the min wit are you using?
