arghhhh.........ear infection here now too :( and we're supposed to be away on holiday next week, grrrr!

Off to the doctors again in a bit, any advice on coping strategies greatly appreciated!!! Will post more later when I get time.....

ps. jealous of those of you watching OBEM seen it couple times at my mum's but we don't have a telly here!!

StealthToddler · 09/02/2012 13:18

oh no! ear infections are horrid highlandbird. am constantly living in fear ollie will get another one as he has just had another snotty nose cold and he seems to then get an ear infection about a week after the cold goes....

He got his first bout of ear infections when we were on holiday too and it made the first few days absolutely miserable as he was soooo cling!

best advice - is make sure your gp gives you antibiotics that will actually clear it up - i.e not just 5 days worth but at least a week. In fact Ollie always needs 10 days or it just comes straight back.

The pain is much worse when they try to sleep - it can hurt to lie flat so if your little one isn't moving around too much you can prop up one end of teh cot so they aren't completely flat. if like ollie they now flip around at night time, that won't be much help!

Control the pain - maximise the pain relief at night time. You can alternate baby nurofen and calpol. I was advised to give the first dose a couple of hours before bedtime and then give the other one just before to enable him to settle. I then had another dose all lined up in a syringe ready to give him round about midnight and then the other one at 4 or 5 in the morning. It is extremely painful so the first few nights of an ear infection my DS' all woke every couple of hours and would be hard to settle without pain relief.

Keep the snotty nose as snot free as you can - I was advised to use the saline nose washes - i.e you squirt saline water (from the chemist in tiny little vials) up the nostril and that flushes the snot out and helps stop build up bacteria.

Keep ears very warm when out - cold air can make it hurt more so make sure hats have ear flaps!

Don't get water in the ears! (or let older ds try to pour water in ds ears!!)

Can you tell I've dealt with a lot of ear infections with all 3 ds??? could write a book!

hope this helps

haloflo · 09/02/2012 20:42

OBEM was so awful last night. I'm still thinking about it now. That poor poor woman. I wish I didn't want another baby as I think it will play on mind for a long time now.

Update on sleep if others are still having problems and still too soft for CC.

We are still cosleeping and the other day had an 11-5. We haven't reached such heady heights as that again but we often get 3-4-5 hour stints which was unthinkable a couple of months ago. The evenings still aren't great but from the 10/11 feed Hannah is sleeping ok. She no longer self settles for naps/bedtime (I have to pat her) but obviously manages to self settle in the night (I see her reaching for us both in the night, checking we are there and she is safe.) My next plan is to night wean her from say 11-6 but for now I am just going with the flow.

Anyway I hope all are well.

sam26oscar · 10/02/2012 14:57

stealth your comment about your DC pouring water in ears mad made me chuckle!!!

haloflo i wouldn't worry too much they will sleep thru eventually and as long as you are happy with the arrangement then thats all that should matter. Oscar regularly sleeps in my bed and he's 7, ( i often make him sleep in my bed to keep me warm!!!!) Cassie more often than not now sleeps 10 hrs but almost every night she will cry out, enough to wake me, get dressing gown, scarf, hat gloves and slippers on (!!) just to realise shes stopped Grr!!
she then has a bottle of cow's milk now at 5am then back to bed til around 8am.

Well, enough about babies i need sympathy !!! i have the most outrageous toothache Sad. As you may remember i went for root canal treatment a few days ago and had the final stage done yesterday. OMG, i was in the chair for 1hr 20mins with my mouth rammed open, instruements dangling and a very weak bladder, not a happy event. Then to top it all off i don't think its been done properly as i am in agony. I am almost eating soup thru a straw as i cant bite or chew on that side of my mouth.

Well, its school run time but i shall sit and await lots of Ahh's and OOh poor yous Wink Wink.!!!!!

highlandbird · 10/02/2012 17:06

Ahhhh, poor you Sam ;)

Thanks Stealth for the advice, much better today thank goodness!! Now, no more colds this winter please!!

me23 · 10/02/2012 21:10

Hi Everyone

The cc was going well and now E is ill he has a viral rash and diarrhea, so I am feeding him in the night again as don't want to risk dehydration. However he is a lot better at being put down at bedtime I bf him then put him down dozy but awake and the last few nights he has only complained for about 30 seconds! We have been having 1 wake a night which is so much better than before and this morning he slept in till 6:30am which is a lie in for us Hmm

Just wish I could sort his naps out too, he only ever has had one nap a day from 3 month old. It is usually an hour long, so trying to either make it longer or make him take 2 naps. will hae to wait until he is recovered though.

It was supposed to be his development review with the HV today but he fell asleep in the car on the way so we are going to have to reshedule as I didn't want to wake him as he would have been miserable and woulsn't have had a nap all day then.

Does anyone know what has happened to Kpidgeon? Is she still around but nameschanged or not? just wondering as she used to be on here quite a lot but hasn't been for ages, hope all is ok with her and her LO.

highlandbird · 12/02/2012 08:15

Me poor E hope he gets better soon, there just seem to be so many bugs going about at the moment. A has just got over his ear infection and now he has another cold, grrrrr (his 4th since christmas!!!!) well done on the sleeping though. wrt naps, maybe he is just a one nap boy??? I know now is about the time they should be dropping one of their naps anyway, which I'm dreading, its hard when theyget up so early isn't it?

Hope you're all having a good weekend, I'm getting a bit fed up iof being stuck indoors with a snotty, clingy child (love him really!!) but am looking forward to a birthday meal out on thurs (the first time me and DP will have been out together for a YEAR!!)

ckny1 · 12/02/2012 15:56

Highland, happy birthday in advance and am jealous so happy for your night out with DH! Hope A feels better soon. Franz has had 4 - 5 colds since we moved to NY and I'm just about fed up. I'm dreading the ear infections, but Stealth, will keep in mind your tips!

Me, am happy to hear the cc worked, though hope E feels better soon!

Hippo, amazing about the walking!!!!!!! We're expecting it any day now as Franz continues to stand against something then lets go with such pride! He even attempts various activities, like drinking water while standing unaided! He can't seem to focus on one thing at a time...Muser , like your coment about I on FB, he also doesn't like to hold our hands while walking, definitely prefers to do things on his own and is very very stubborn independent.

We've been having all sorts of troubles with sleep, naps, teeth, feeding, etc. these days, and I'm trying to understand what to do! DH and I are exhausted from the new night wakes, Halo, I don't know how you function!

Can others share their experiences with food and amounts of milk these days? His GP visit recently was positive, except that the nurses told me he is drinking too much formula (24 - 32 oz, or 4 full bottles per day)! They said it's time to increase his food intake and reduce his bottle, so I've been trying to give him a small snack 2 hrs before dinner and cut 1/2 of a milk bottle and increase water and he has been miserable and not finishing his dinners since! :( I would stop snacking except that he gets so winey in the afternoon for something. He was such a good eater before, but now he's becoming picky. (So much for the theory that BLW reduces pickiness, though I don't regret going in that direction). I think this is all part of the messed up sleep now, but I don't think I had changed things too much. Ugh.

Muser · 15/02/2012 10:54

My little girl is a year old today!

haloflo · 15/02/2012 13:27

Happy Birthday I! I can't believe all our babies will be 1 in the next month or so. Are you having a party?

We are sick household. DP and H got it Sunday night and now I am ill. Luckily my mum is on half term so took H this morning whilst I slept the worst of it off. They are on their way back now, hopefully she will want to play quietly and have a long afternoon nap.

StealthToddler · 15/02/2012 13:33

Sick household here too. Ds2 went down with croup last night. He's not had it for almost two years. Horrible as it panics him. Think ollie gave him the cold virus but fortunately he just has a cold and it hasnt turned to croup!

ckny1 · 15/02/2012 14:52

Yeah, Happy Birthday Muser 's little I! And in case I miss anyone, Happy Birthday to all the Feb/March babies!!! I'm getting emotional now, gotta go...

highlandbird · 15/02/2012 16:56

Happy Birthday Isobelle!!!

bleurgh, lurgy here too, all of us getting over a vomiting bug, and still all full of coughs and colds, wish had family nearby to take A off my hands for a few hours!
Hope everyone feels better soon, can't believe our babies are all turning 1 soon......

Medee · 15/02/2012 17:04

Medee · 15/02/2012 20:04

thanks Petty, so many birthdays to celebrate!

Lozario · 15/02/2012 20:14

Thanks petty, lots of people seem to have disappeared don't they? Glad lots of us have stuck around too though! Can't believe the birthdays have started. In my head, Lara is still a tiny newborn, whenever she does something clever like clap or wave I say "WOW she's a genius!" until DH points out its all age appropriate! Still no moving though... Lazy thing.

Have come down with a cold again. Urgh. Might have a bath and an early night.

Happy happy birthday to your girl Muser. Bet you can't believe she's a year already.

stealth even the word croup makes me shudder - DS suffers too. My sympathies! Supposedly they grow out of it between 3-6?!

me23 · 15/02/2012 20:26

Happy birthday I :-) hope you have had a lovely day muser I've always thought the first birthday is a much of a celebration for the parents having survived the 1st year of parenthood!

E is has a cold, he is a lot better at puttin down at bedtime but e is still waking in the night granted it is only once at 4:30 usually but I'm not sure what to do about it I tried cc but the he wakes at 5am anyway! The last two nights I have fed him and he has slept through until 7! Too bad I don't get to sleep though I'm out of the house by 6:30.

Jupiter118 · 16/02/2012 00:08

Ahh Petty thank you!!! Happy Birthday I via Muser and other babies with imminent birthdays. [Waves to all]

Also wondering what happened to all those people from the list (an so unbelievably nosy)? And where are some of the more/used to be regular posters (disclaimer as am hopeless at posting myself) cheese, mixed geek 1Catherine Kpidgeon - hope all are well!

Wow where did a year go? I don?t like to think about my posts from a year ago ? seriously TMI about mucous plugs and ?is this it moments? cringe. Too much time spent MNing.

News from here?

am still crap at posting ? sorry.

Lots of standing, cruising and crawling. Think E is pondering taking first steps ? arrrggghhh. Gave in yesterday and bought cruising shoes. V cute though.

Teething hell ? refusal of most foods ? very fussy baby, sore bum, red cheeks, buds all over gums, excessive saliva, coughing as a result, but only 2 teeth so far which she?s had since December. Are there suddenly going to be about 8-10 teeth I wonder.

Going back to work in less than 3 weeks ? absolutely dreading it. Was fine after DS, but not looking forward really, apart from being able to have a wee on my own! Think it is because she is probably the last (I could be persuaded to have another, DH very against as says I am vile when preggers [wonders if she can persuade him] am 36 so probably need to crack on tbh.) Anyway I digress, on plus side re: work only going back 3 days, Tue, Wed, Thur ? Phew!!!!

Sorry to hear lots of illness about ? grimbo! Sympathies.

CKNY food/ milk ? glad it?s not just me. E has (is offered) 7oz first thing in morning and before bed and then offered 6oz in the afternoon. The morning and evening she generally takes 5-7oz but afternoon very hit and miss ? sometimes she drinks it all, sometimes hardly any. Should I drop it, can I remember what happened with DS? No ? absolutely no clue.

God just seen the time, not remotely sleepy but half term and bouncy children will be up in a matter of hours (why am I not in bed???????) so must go

toodle pip x

pettyprudence · 16/02/2012 22:13

Ah just the hardcore few left or the others have real lives to get on with. I think some of our MIAs such as cheese, catherine, mixed etc... are over on the fb group every now and again though.... I can't read my old posts either Jupiter esp my "is this it post"! I think everyone else was screaming "yes" but I still wasn't convinced until A's head had nearly popped out - doh!

Thinking of mixed I think it was her who set up the fb group and suggested meet ups? I'm in the process of trying to get together with some other friends from all over the country and it got me thinking "ooh wonder if some of the March 2011 MNers fancy getting together for a big meet up in a central location?" So, does anyone? How feasible would somewhere like Birmingham be (that's in the middle innit? Excluding CKNY - I don't think the middle of the Atlantic is feasible! Or maybe you could host us all and we have an MN holiday!!!). If we plan now, maybe we could meet up by this time next year Grin

Purplefan · 17/02/2012 21:51

Hi everyone,
Where does time go?!!! Been busy in the purple household..Bethan has had her Physio apt which went ok... but too be honest was not a great deal of use, however to look on the positive side (as I always do Grin) the physio was not overly concerned and is happy that Beth is making progress and says that the delay is probably size related and she is still age appropriate!! She gave us a few exercises to practise and I can ring directly if concerned at all within the next 12 months.

I was then ill for a few days with a nasty tummy bug that had been making its way around school, so had to take 2 days off work and take to my bed, however the 2nd day Bethan was poorly too, so I can't even be ill on my own!! Wink
Then half-term arrives and I have been busy trying to entertain both girls. DH had yesterday and today off as today is his birthday, so we had some nice family time.

Today was also our first visit from speech therapist about Beths eating.... she was lovely Grin and so supportive. She watched Beth eating and discussed her mouth and lip action (apparently all good and as it should be) - she gave us a little flexie cup to use for gloopy textures and a little mouth massager tool.. I have some face and mouth exercises to do with her as she believes her gag reflex needs to move backwards (which apparently usually happens naturally without us really knowing) - I have been doing the right things, now need to try home cooking again and gradually thicken the textures - let her play with the food etc.... basically weaning again as she is probably more ready now! She is going to e-mail me a list of bite and dissolve foods (there are not any healthy ones, but it is a starting point). Bethan wouldn't let her look in her mouth properly, but she thinks her pallets are ok?!?

Anyway - I hope everyone is well and that sleep issues have improved... great to hear that some are taking their first steps (that will be a long way off for us!!! Wink

sam26oscar · 18/02/2012 20:00

Happy Birthday I (sorry haven't been on its half term!!) i think there are a couple more before Cassies!!
Jupiter Cassie will only eat weetabix or ready brek somenights as her teeth apparently are hurting...she's still only got 2!! So how she can be so fussy when i can't see anymore i don't know!!!
Purple sorry you have been poorly but happy that Bethan is progressing so well!!

Petty i'm up for a huge MN meet...really going to be difficult but lets se if we can be the first antenatal group that can manage it!!! If its far enough in advance we should be able to do it and make arrangements for siblings!!??

Well, those on the fb page will have seen the video of Cassies first steps!! She took them exactly one week before her 1st birthday Grin. Oscar was the same i think he was 2 weeks before his birthday!!
SOOO cute, hopefully now she can begin to work off the fat on her butt and get rid of the cellulite, although i will moss it when its gone..so lush to squidge!!!

Thinking now especially of spilttheteaagain And Tooimmature does anyone know if they have had their babies or when they were due??

Well, am trying to watch Sports relief got to dance so will sign in next week!!

Kagey · 20/02/2012 07:17

Morning all Smile. I thought I'd quickly check in as it's been a while and can't believe some of the babies are 1 - the last year has gone too quickly!!

Dd2 is being a good girl except the whole waking up early on my day off . work is going well though so I can't complain.

Happy birthday toddlers x

ckny1 · 20/02/2012 15:21

Petty, would be fun to host everyone here in NY (maybe b/c of our lack of space though, it would be a bit cramped)! Have never been to Birmingham, but seeing as Franz's hair looks like he should be in a B'ham boys' band from the 80's, perhaps we should meet you there, too!

Purple , hope you're feeling better, and glad to hear of B's progress. She is a beauty, and her smile is a heart-melter! ;)

Sam , I continue to watch C's video as it's the cutest site ever!!! Thanks for sharing (and hope DH finally enjoyed!)

Franz's sleep and nap patterns are still a bit of a mess, but I've decided to give him as much formula as he needs. If he's still drinking 4 8oz bottles within 24 hrs, then that's what he needs. He's always indicated when he needs less/more, so I'll have to trust him and not the doc's office on this one.

Lozario · 21/02/2012 14:22

M'lovs!

Just a quickie as I expect the kids will be up shortly from their lunchtime nap... I'm exhausted as been catching up with the house after a long weekend of illness from Lara, I had to sleep with her Fri and Sat night which I hate as I'm rubbish at co-sleeping and anyway she was burning up so not much sleeping happening! She's back in her bed now but still so bunged up she can't breastfeed - I'm worried my milk supply is going to conk out - any one had a few days of no feeds?

And can't be arsed with pancakes. In a sleep-deprived grump!

I see it's Mendipgirls DD's birthday today - happy birthday if you are reading this!

sam the walking vid is great. I showed it to lara to show her what she's meant to be attempting - still nothing here!

purple glad everyone is pleased with B's progress :)

big meet I'd try if I can get a sitter for the older one; not sure I'd attempt it with both kids.

Right Lara has actually just woken up so I'm going to use the short nap as an excuse to go and get her weighed - I want her to go in the upright car seat now as she is still in the lie-back one and hates it! No way is she the required 20lbs but hoping she's getting there as want to buy new seat today - are yours in upright car seat yet?
