Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

Is this even legal?

That’s a great question. I can’t see how it would actually be legal under the EA2010 to expel someone by association with a Zionist synagogue. So the Greens, by rejecting amendment 3, may have served merely to advertise their antisemitic intent to expel such members, rather than actually being able to do so under UK law. 🤞

There will be legal challenge. Zionism must be a protected belief. These racist shits and those that enabled them at the top of the party deserve everything that's coming to them. The pathetic cowardice of the leadership and Green MOs us obey of the nastiest things I've seen in British politics.

Not very canny political operators are the membership of the Green Party it seems. Everybody knows you are supposed to not come out and say what you want to do with the Jews and Israel because now you can't go on national media platforms and call everybody a liar.

Oh well, better luck with your next political endeavours you fools.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 04/10/2026 19:24

The problem is not just in The Greens but in a number of other organisations too - The Greens have over 200,000 members but this policy vote was made by only the 1800ish who were physically present at the conference. All political parties and campaining organisations (eg Trade Unions) should have a good-governance expectation that no new policy gets adopted without the positive support of at least 50% of their members - obviously with postal and online voting as you couldn't organise an in-person conference for that many people but policies shouldn't be set by the die-hard believers who dedicate themselves to influencing these kinds of decisions. There's too much potential for crackpots to swing the vote to be totally unrepresentative of what the main membership of the party believes.

The fact that they voted down an amendment that would have protected British Jews ( so not ' Israelis or 'Zionists' but British Jewish members of the Green Party) shows exactly their intentions. They deserve to be bankrupted out of existence for this. Just at a time when we need a party that prioritises the environment.

Reactions from other politicians:

Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: “British Jews should not have to disclaim a belief in Jewish self-determination and the existence of Israel in order to be accepted by a British political party.

“One look beneath the surface of Zack Polanski’s Green Party shows a party toxic to its core. It is clear the Green Party cannot bring itself to stand unambiguously against those who hate Jews.

“Antisemitism has no place in our society. The Conservatives will always stand with British Jews. The next Conservative Government will put 10,000 extra police officers on the streets and give forces the powers they need to keep every community in this country safe.”

Lord Austin, former Labour MP and independent peer, suggested the Green Party had echoes of the Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn.

“The Greens are going to discover - just as Labour did when antisemitism poisoned the party under Corbyn - that whilst most ordinary decent British people might never have met a Jewish person, they can spot antisemitism and they don’t vote for antisemites,” he said.

The Green Party needs to sink without trace after this. Shame on them.

PurpleThistle7 · 04/10/2026 19:36

This honestly makes me feel sick. I know the greens have fallen apart in recent years but they are a legitimate political party who have existed for a long time and they’ve decided the best way to fix their image is to attack 0.4% of the population. Given the experiences of me and my children lately they may indeed be right.

A decent number of people in my social and work circles are green voters and I’m not confident at all that this will stop them. The main union at my work has often stated their alliance with the Pro Palestinian organisation that supports the full destruction of Israel so I don’t think this is really a fringe opinion.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/10/2026 19:38

So, how would they propose to police evidence this? Have people staking out synagogues with cameras to take photos of everybody walking in? Surveillance of mikvao after dark to see if they can catch a couple of women coming out? Keep an Excel spreadsheet of recorded sightings and associations with other people?

That's not problematic at all, is it?

Most of those 200000 members joined in the last year. They have joined knowing all about ' Greens for Palestine'. This proposed motion has been on the table for a while. There are likely to be a substantial number of that 200000 who agree with the policy.

I think we’ll find in the next few months that deputy leader, Mothin Ali, will sideline an openly gay and Jewish Polanski and the Greens will become a fully fundamentalist party that will be tapping into the Biradari system.

“In countries like Pakistan, as well as in local council elections in Western nations with large South Asian diasporas (such as the UK), political candidates negotiate directly with clan elders. The candidate promises political favours, infrastructure, or jobs in exchange for the elders delivering the entire clan’s bloc of votes.”

“Because the system is traditionally patriarchal and hierarchical, the choices of male community elders often dictate how the rest of the network, including women and youth, are expected to vote.“

Now I want to hear clear, unequivocal condemnation from the Labour Party.

Bridget Phillipson MP, Chair of the Labour Party, and Minister for Women and Equalities, responds to the Green Party’s vote on Zionism at the Green Party Conference, said:

“It is shameful to vote against a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine and to condemn the vast majority of British Jews and Jews around the world as racist for supporting Israel’s right to exist. It is fundamentally wrong and the leadership of the Green Party must make clear that this will not be their position moving forwards.

“The Labour Party has always been clear that criticism of the policies of the Israeli Government is not antisemitic, and the Labour government has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank. But today’s vote at the Green Party Conference crosses a line and should be condemned across the political spectrum.

“This vote underlines how important it was that we changed the Labour Party from top to bottom and ripped out the scourge of antisemitism from within the party.

"The Labour Party and the Labour Government will continue working every day to ensure our Jewish communities are safe, feel safe and have their rights upheld, as well as making sure we rid our society of antisemitism once and for all.”

I'm sure there will be some of the 1000 people who voted for this who would like nothing more than to do just this to intimidate Jewish people and eliminate them from the party. And what would the party do about it if they did? Their own party policy allows it.

Neverstopwondering · 04/10/2026 19:54

Racist people pose a racist question

Then racist people vote in favour of what they have put forward

Am I surprised? No I am not

Does it change my view of the racist people? No it does not

Does it matter what racist people think of Jewish people? No it does not

They can vote on whatever they like most the country know they are a bunch of misfit fuckwitts that don't matter in the great scheme of things

I have often been the first Jewish person people have met. I’m in Scotland though.

And in Wales the only active synagogues I can trace are in Cardiff - one Orthodox and one Reform. I know there are scattered informal gatherings of Jews elsewhere, but few people outside Cardiff would be likely to encounter one in daily life or at all.
