Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

Of course there wasn’t. Hopefully the focus on the Middle East will turn most people off. He should at least pretend he gives a fuck about people actually in this country.

Hasn’t even got the wit to pretend. It’s crazy to me that someone as stupid as him got to such a high position in UK politics.

From The Australian newspaper.
Brutally true.

Brilliant! Nutshell.

Absolutely. Is it the priority for most people in the UK? He came across as utterly obsessed.

It's extraordinary. He didn't even give an accepted definition of Zionism. Why does he think his family ended up in the UK? Why did they change their name to Paulden? What a fool.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/10/2026 09:24

I imagine it’s about as much of a priority for the average person struggling to hold things together as “trans rights”.

The Green Party is investigating the member who proposed the “Zionism is racism” motion at party conference, after it emerged that she had admitted to remaining close friends with an al-Qaeda terrorist who plotted a suicide bomb attack on passengers at Heathrow.

Zack Polanski insisted he “wasn’t aware” that Lubna Speitan, who proposed and campaigned for the policy, had offered to testify in defence of Minh Quang Pham.

Pham is a British citizen who planned to detonate a backpack filled with shrapnel dipped in rat poison in Heathrow’s arrivals area. He trained at an al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (Aqap) camp in Yemen in 2011, was arrested in the UK in 2012 before being extradited to the US in 2015 to face terrorism charges. (Times)

Good point.

Would Burnham want to get into bed with Mothin Ali if he took over from ZP? He seems to find Polanski palatable.

I am a very visual person so you just put quite an interesting image in my head despite that being a popular expression

😮

This is so true and nothing is being done to stop it happening.

I worked in the prison service nearly two decades ago and it was known then that Islamists were targeting male prisons, as they saw a supply of angry young men, with violent tendencies and ripe for radicalisation by extremism.

It also happens in mosques. There must be moderate Muslims who can understand what is being said in these places. Why are they afraid to speak up against ‘enemies of god’?

I could answer that question on behalf of my friends that are Muslim and ex Muslim but that would create a totally different thread. One that at some point I should probably start myself to discuss this because a lot of people have trouble understanding why they don't speak out publicly. Maybe one day when I am feeling up to it and have a lot of time.

Polanksi is unaware of a lot of things, it would seem.

I think we all know where this path is leading.

Mothin Ali would be my guess.

Then lets hope David Collier has the goods from the Green conference to do something about him other than get him to pose for a piss take photo

Yes agree again. He only spoke about the two state solution part. Burnham and Philipson's statement seem to be signalling that if the greens drop that part, all will be well. Its extremely worrying that Burnham has waited this long, said very little, and then failed to rule out a Labour/Green coalition.

My fear is that the Greens used this motion as a way of testing the waters. Destroying Israel is still too far, but they have got the signal that if they drop that part, everything else will stand (the destruction of Israel will still obviously be implied but just not explicitly, that is still currently too much for polite society).

I worry that they will drop only that part of the motion for the time being, and we will be right back to where we started. People can't forget this or be willing to accept it.

Yes this is my take too. Labour are basically telling them to do just that.

Interesting that Jenny Jones has suggested that the wording of the motion needs to be "clarified".
Vague, but could mean they're about to do as you describe to stay in Burnham's good books. Very worrying.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 09/10/2026 10:00

They know they need the Greens, don’t they?

According to the latest MRP poll, yes they do. If they can't use the greens, they'll have to pivot to a Lab/LD/SNP coalition which will probably mean IndyRef#2.

He’s the cat’s paw for extremists infiltrating British politics.

(Aesop’s fable, I think. The monkey wanted the nuts roasting on the fire, but couldn’t get them without burning his hands. So he persuaded the cat to use her claws to steal the nuts for him. The monkey ate the nuts. The cat singed her fur and starved because she could not eat the nuts.)

Thinking about it more, I also worry that the Greens knew this would happen, and this is a sort of dog whistle to make their intentions clear before they amend the motion. It can be a wink-nudge 'we changed it so we're above criticism.' Like how Roe v Wade being overturned was leaked in the US ahead of time, to take steam out of the protests when it eventually happened.

I wouldn't be surprised. We all now know their true intentions whether they amend or not, as do their supporters.
Labour know now too, but they would prefer the greens to appear more cuddly on paper. So depressing.

Chersfrozenface · 09/10/2026 10:43

Zippy's problem is that he's not an old school political operator. He's just a bloke who has picked up some (pretty meaningless) soundbites about "hope" and "fairness" and repeats them with some natural confidence and some actorly techniques, and was, in his own terms, in the right place at the right time.

I'll be fascinated to see what he does and what happens to him
