Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

That’s utter nonsense and honestly 100% bigoted to Jewish people . Since the hen is the Green Party a radical left party ?

About three years now, I think maybe four

FableAndFern · 04/10/2026 20:44

I thought that unlikely too.

Yes I thought that was a weird comment!

Have been thinking about this and I’d guess that isn’t correct but also plenty of people have met someone Jewish but have no idea. I know quite a few closeted Jews. Personally I bring it up quickly if meeting someone as I’d rather know right away if there’s a problem, but plenty of others just keep it to themselves, including an awful lot of Jewish children I know from synagogue.

I don’t get how ZP wants the Muslim vote for his party

he is gay Jewish and has crap teeth
why would he want to support & pander to people who say that being gay is a sin and hate Jews

they use to be all about the environment
WTF happened to them

It's bizarre. How long does ZP think he would last in Palestine, or any similar state? Seriously?
I just don't get it.
He must know how Jews and gays are treated
.

I’m relieved not to have seen anyone on this thread supporting this antisemitic policy, but I would have liked to ask any supporters to explain to me why Israel is a racist country but Pakistan, created specifically as a homeland for the Indian sub-continent Muslims, isn’t.

Obviously I will never vote Green again (and I despise their leader the boob-botherer, as I saw him referred to recently!)

Just out of interest who will you vote for now

but this is so funny and so true as well
Gays for Palestine - don’t they know what they would do to someone if they are gay

I can only think of one openly Jewish pupil I've taught at my school in 20 years, and I don't know any socially.

Tbf it's not a particularly diverse area.

Hate that tactic, "Oh but I'm Jewish!"

You're still a crap leader mate, who has allowed your party to become antisemitic.

Yes it was the same response when people were canvassing here re the leader. I do think this party policy makes it harder to excuse a quite extreme view.

Yup - no more Mr Nice Guy.

Which was the image he wanted to project.

My kids are and always were the only Jewish children in their schools (primary and high school). And we live in a city. I imagine it’s even less common once you go north.

ErroltheSwampDragon · 04/10/2026 21:12

I've definitely been the first Jew people have met, particularly at uni. Someone asked me if Judaism was a kind of Catholicism 🤔

I'm not certain if Polanski is so thick that he doesn't realise who he is in bed with, or if he's just so desperate for attention that he doesn't care.

@ErroltheSwampDragon He doesn't care, he's just egotistical and power hungry and wants to use it for his own gain. He doesn't care who he throws under the bus as long as he gets ahead in the short term.

It sounds very right wing to me.
A terrible decision.

Yes the concern I had with the ultra conservative Islamic fundamentalists the Greens have courted is that they are pretty hard Right, extremely socially conservative, religious hardliners. The Greens have decided that because they are Brown, they can't possibly be right wing. It's a kind of colonial 'Poor innocent savages' mindset.

EdithStourton · 04/10/2026 21:31

TBH this vote is chilling, but I hope it will wake a lot of people up to the absolute lunacy of the Greens.

I can't bear Zach Polanski. I cannot imagine what sort of pretzelled thinking he uses to rationalise his actions.

They think if only they weren't being oppressed by the Jews they would stop being homophobic and embrace multiculturalism and socialism. It worked out well for them in Iran after all. Of course, every other Muslim state in which it is illegal to be Gay is also oppressed by default by the West or someone into being homophobic.

FKAT · 04/10/2026 21:34

There are 300k ish Jews in the UK population of 70 million. Many live in specific areas (I now live in the most Jewish constituency in the UK - not difficult to work out). Many people all over the country will not come across Jewish people in the general course of their lives. I grew up in Ellie Chowns constituency`& there are almost no Jewish people in that area. My mum on the other hand grew up in north Manchester where they were the only non-Jewish family on the street.

I was fortunate to become best friends with a Jewish girl at University in the early 80s. I suppose University is a great place to meet people from all walks of life, and I definitely did that!

Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism
Twiglets1 · 04/10/2026 22:15

The Guardian report that some Green members are consulting lawyers over whether the policy could be challenged for breaching equalities legislation.

Adam Wagner KC, the barrister who led a case that concluded Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour broke equalities laws over antisemitism, said such a case would have a good chance of success.

“I think there is a strong risk that the motion as passed contravenes the Equality Act 2010, which applies to political parties, as it will discriminate against and harass people who hold Zionist beliefs and Jewish people more generally,” he added.

Zionism when defined in the broad sense of supporting a Jewish nation state “is likely to be a protected belief” under the act, he said.

Most British people have never met a Jewish person?? Really? Chat GPT estimates 75% of the UK population live within 10 miles of a synagogue.

Google's Gemini disagrees with ChatGPT: it says 75% of synagogues are in Greater London, even if the other 25% were scattered throughout Wales/Scotland and the rest of England there's not going to be a synagogue within 10 miles for 75% of total population.

Then 60% of British Jews live in Greater London so it's very easy to believe most British people have never met a Jewish person.
