Burglars and robbers often operate a long way from where they live as it lessens the chances of being caught if no one knows them locally. We had crime sprees every year here in the winter - farm and gardening equipment stolen. We are in the SE and it turns out the gang was from Cumbria and would come down for two weeks every winter and then go home.

He knew what he was going there for and it wasn't cash. He took her money to replicate a burglary.

My understanding was the attack was caught on camera in her house.

I read that article and wondered if he took her ID and bank cards to prove to ‘someone’ that he’d been there. Like some kind of sick trophy. Which would make sense if there is some kind of group behind this. I also read that it was captured on camera in her home, hence they knew what was said and how long he was there.

Exactly, and it just so happens it was Ann Widecombe’s house he happened to stumble on, no one drives 300 or so miles to a Devon hamlet to steal a purse and then drive back again, it’s beyond ludicrous if anyone swallows that line.

If that's the case it should be a slam dunk. And the question of motivation could impact the sentence.

It's such a horrendous thing to do to an old woman just eating her lunch. I abhor the views of several politicians but can't get my head round this at all.

@SadiraOfTyrThis isn’t the case for murder. Travelling criminals tend to do low level petty crimes before moving on. It’s impossible to slot someone travelling so far, going in with a weapon, a frenzied attack in two mins into that profile.

I read that some of her belongings (purse?) and hammer were found in his bins. Either he's the stupidest burglar ever or he wants to be found guilty for his own reasons.

An awful attack on an elderly female. RIP to Ann, it's so sad for her many friends and family and I feel horrified reading about the details of her final moments.

Yes, that's reported in the DM. The attack was all caught on the kitchen camera and he was also caught on camera parking on her driveway.

Apparently he walked into her kitchen hiding a hammer behind him and asked if she had any bank cards/ID.

It's a truly horrible crime and I hope the police get to the bottom of it.

You can’t, the poor gardener, and poor people who had to watch the video footage. Sickening.

The DM also reports they found photos of her ID/cards on his phone which IMO sounds like he was possibly posting proof of his crime to someone.

I hope this individual (or lawyers for him) don’t start playing the incapacity card. It may be insane to do such a thing, but also evil .

That's just so horrific. Those last moments of her life must have been terrifying. It's terrible to think people actually rejoiced in her death.

I just read the details and I can’t believe anyone could rejoice in such horrific evil.

I despair of a world which gets excited at the thought of violent death.
