Has he only been charged with murder, not the other potential charges he was arrested for?

OwlCalledSage · Today 15:31

Horrible to read of her brutal end as she sat in her kitchen. Poor Anne.

He’s been charged with one count of murder, nothing else and the police have said they will not be commenting further unless new evidence about a motive comes to light.

Poor woman, absolutely horrific.

LuckyHazelFox · Today 15:33

Fucking men, as usual.

Who the hell drives all that way to bludgeon an old lady with a hammer and then drives back.

What would have happened if he had arrived when she was on the scheduled zoom call

LuckyHazelFox · Today 15:38

She was old school and left her doors unlocked. Oh Ann.

He was apparently only in there for 2 minutes so must have been really frenzied.

BBC News also says her gardener found her. I feel sorry for them as well - how can you unsee that?

Many people do in rural areas. We never leave front door unlocked, but with this weather patio doors are open, although have locked garden gate, so hopefully we are secure. But you see it on here all the time, 'why should I lock my front door when I am in the house'

I know. I'm the same where I live but we aren't in the public eye. So he not only murdered her he then took her purse.

Strange that the BBC report said that the medical report doesn't yet state cause of death. Is it possible she had a heart attack midway through the attack

daffydreams · Today 15:51

What group advocates for hitting women with hammers?

Babyboomtastic · Today 15:53

Disgustingly grim and a horrible way for her to die.

It was also a slight relief to me, believe it or not. I was worried that either:

  • she'd been subjected to a very prolonged attack, given she wasn't found for 24 hours.
  • that like so many murder victims, I was worried that she'd been sexually assaulted, which given Ann's beliefs would have been about the worst thing that could ever have happened to her.

Him being in and out within 2 minutes means at least those things didn't happen.

I hope that she died quickly, wasn't conscious for more than the first blow or two, and wasn't left to die.

Poor Anne 😢.
I didn't like her politics, but I loved her forthright attitude, and her sticking to her beliefs. I also occasionally followed her cats on her adorable widdeweb.

I was on another thread and some twit said we need to try and understand why people undertake crime and support them so they don’t do
it again.

I had been burgled and my dog beaten up. Would that person have the same view on this crime?

Let's hope those people don't pop up after this. I think we've all got a good idea why this was done. She was a woman, elderly and outspoken.

@Babyboomtastic I also thought both those things.

derxa · Today 16:12

I was on Jeremy Vine today and one panellist was Michael? from the left wing group Novara He is also gay so not a natural ally. But he clearly liked Ann very much.

RumpleDumple · Today 16:17

This has upset me greatly, as im surebit has others. A piece of scum battering an old lady like that, it's horrendous to think of what she went through. I so hope she was unconscious after the first blow.

JulietteHasAGun · Today 16:23

The news report today is odd, that he went in, asked if she had bank cards, battered hero death, rifled through her purse and left in under 2 mins. Makes it sound more like a burglary, but who drives that distance to burgle someone? Plus I assume he must have confessed to this as no other witness, so they wouldn’t know what he said unless he confessed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dollymylove · Today 16:26

The picture posted in the papers after he was named bears no resemblance to the CCTV of him allegedly getting in his car outside his home

I think we the disagreements we have with politics, we can all come together on this.

Absolutely.

Our politics were different, but I agreed with her on many occasions. She was warm, funny and whipsharp with the best eye roll in the business.

But more than that I admired her. She was a principled, hardworking, uncompromising, uncorruptable, gobby woman.❤️

I was always going to be sad when she died. That she was silenced by a violent murderer is so sickening and heartbreaking.

KnitFastDieWarm · Today 16:28

NoDrums · Today 15:15

Same. It’s beyond horrific. So brave, a 28 year old able bodied male, attacking a 78 year old female (apparently whilst having lunch), and hitting her on the head repeatedly with a hammer, all in the name of ideology.

The absolute BEST of the be kind brigade, who think they are righteous absolutists and that therefore violence is justified against anyone who thinks otherwise, because those others are bad people. They have to be bad right, because the righteous are good. Unbelievable, the state of this nation.

I can’t remember who said this - it may have been someone on here - but it’s always stuck with me:

Far too many people are stupid or morally bankrupt enough to think that what they believe is what makes them a "good" person, rather than how they behave to everyone else around them.

I hope Ann’s faith was a comfort to her in her last moments. She clearly treated people with respect and kindness regardless of whether or not they agreed with her.
