It's sad to think that Ann's name will be joining Jo and David's in the Commons. Plaques in memory of 3 politicians who were killed for their political ideologies. Early, of course, to say with Ann but has there ever been a more dangerous time for politicians, since Thatcher?

The police have clarified that the murder was targeted but are still working on the motive - so basically it was either personal or political.

DontDareCallMeDarling · 18/07/2026 12:50

The suspect is plastered all over the Daily Mail. I just saw it in Morrisons.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 12:58

I know I'm surprised they've don't that but the DM must have had the go ahead. They've been withholding his name for legal reasons.

His name's out there if you Google (unsure if allowed to post it)

How are they allowed to do that? His name and photo is all over Twitter now. And details of his life.

KerryWeaversSpecs · 18/07/2026 14:13

If he ends up not being charged with AWs murder the Mail will be in big trouble.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 14:19

Seeing that pic of the suspect - what a brave big man. Easily being able to overpower a 78 year old woman.

If this is at all the wrong guy the Daily Mail are toast.

placemats · 18/07/2026 15:17

The picture the Daily Mail put up was taken Easter 2022. It bears little resemblance to the recording of him getting into the car.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 18/07/2026 15:46

I don't normally get involved in this sort of speculation but in the later pic he seems to have more hair in the sense of it has receeded less than in earlier pic. So unless he's had a hair transplant is it really the same man? I don't think it looks like him even apart from the hair, but the hairline just looks really different. And his face, what can be seen of it.
RIP Ann, I didn't agree with her on most things but she didn't deserve this kind of suffering and I've been struck by how people from all over the political spectrum say she was lovely and kind to them. We all have some bonkers views but how we actually treat others counts. So I may even have revised my view of her.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 16:15

No matter what was thought of both Thatcher and Widdecombe (Ann) ruffled the feathers of their male opposite numbers. It's disgraceful that Cameron never put forward Ann as a peer. Instead he went for two business women, whom, in my opinion, hadn't earned their spot in the Lords. Brady and Mone.

My goodness that's true! Rather see Ann Widdecombe in the Lords than Michelle Mone any day of the week.

It really came back to bite him after the PPE scandal. He played a poor hand there. He went for style over substance. Ann didn't immerse herself in scandal. On top of Mone's misdoings, Karren Brady has built her career on the back of dodgy businessmen. A really really bad call.

I don't know how the dates work out, but maybe they thought a Peer should not be doing all the celeb TV stuff ?

Then again, There is Baron Sugar.

Personally, I think they go well overboard with the House of Lords. But yes, I agree that for Ann Widdecombe, the Lords would have been deserved. I would have sat her beside the Bishops,

I knew people who knew her when she was MP for Maidstone. They all spoke very highly of her, regardless of political views.

Maybe she was offered a peerage and declined?

Hello @RedTagAlan! Nice to see you on another thread apart from the Trumpington threads! 😂

Mone did a stint selling crap on the QVC shopping channel, which seems to me (wadoo I know though?) pretty undignified. I can't recall the timelines either but I think she might have got her peerage while that was going on?
Anyway, the woman's a disgrace and seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth since her downfall.

Here’s a link to the MailOnline article naming the suspect.

The Mail (published by ANL) is very lawyered up. Very.

Tbh I wouldn't share that on the small chance that he is not charged, I don't care how lawyered up the Mail is. Look at what happened to Christopher Jeffries.
