Suspicious death, suspected murder. Think there is a press conference soon.

RIP Ann, she was still the political spokesperson for Reform on Immigration and Social justice so may have been politically motivated.

PropertyD · 10/07/2026 17:42

If Ann had said something similar to what this ‘Heather’ has said she would probably getting arrested.

Hopefully the police are on their way to speak to them NOW

I’m reading the updates from the Independent.

It’s a bit frustrating as the reporter is comparing it to other politically motivated deaths and implying that this is what it was.

Of course it could be, but it could be other reasons to and I feel it’s quite irresponsible to speculate.

Look what happened when the attack in Belfast was misreported - it was whipped up into an apparent ‘beheading’ and an Islamic attack which lead to dangerous riots.

There will be no rioting in the streets here. After all, it's just another woman killed at the hands of a man.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 10/07/2026 17:43

I live quite close - well, 15 minutes away, and know her house and area well.
it’s really sad, and very very shocking.
i guess it could be aggravated burglary but that it so rare round here - I actually don’t know anyone who has been burgled.

The GLP are already representing the polycule in another case - I’m sure they would extend the coverage for a headline and another justgiving money pit.

In the late Ann Widdecombe’s honour I am spelling her name correctly before I shoot off to Pedants’ Corner. And yes, getting someone’s name right is a mark of respect. RIP

Weeellokthen · 10/07/2026 17:45

Rip Ann, i'm gonna miss you on Jeremy Vine 🌻

Maybe assisted suicide? Although I admit, that doesn't seem a very Ann Widdecombe thing to do.

Without want to sound bad, was anyone else surprised she was only 78?

She had a nasty head wound.

I think it’s important that we condemn the murder of people we disagree with.

If this becomes clearly politically aggravated, I think it’s important that people who don’t agree with her politics have made it patently clear that they don’t believe murder is a proportionate response to disagreement.

Someone’s already started bandying about “murdered by a lefty,” maybe the “lefties” would like to make clear they don’t associate with that whatsoever.

Edited

Ah come on, the intent is clear: I need to denounce this awful murder (show that I'm a good person), but am worried I'll be ostracised by the kind folk on the left unless I produce my (currently fashionable) political credentials.
When Jo Cox was murdered I was as aghast as anyone and not once did I feel the need to say I disagreed with her politics- which I did.
Mind I didn't have to worry about appeasing right wing purists- it just doesn't work like that on the right.
Let's be honest, aggression from the left far, far outweighs that on the right. Don't be disingenuous, we all know it.

26 year old male arrested at Newton Abbot. Described as white British male

Puddlewoman · 10/07/2026 17:47

Well she was a tough old thing, and it's awful this has happened, its come to something when you have to hope its just a aggrevated robbery or a wrong place wrong time thing

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 10/07/2026 17:47

They have arrested a 26-year-old man.

26 years old! Perhaps a burglary gone wrong.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 10/07/2026 17:50

This is awful. 26 year old man beating up an old lady.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 10/07/2026 17:50

The officer is saying not to speculate.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 10/07/2026 17:47

They have arrested a 26-year-old man.

I hope they have the right man.

SwedishEdith · 10/07/2026 17:52

Wonder if she or a neighbour had a ring doorbell? Very fast arrest.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 10/07/2026 17:53

WrongKindOfFeminist · 10/07/2026 17:51

I hope they have the right man.

It's going to be robbery. Maybe even someone she was helping. I doubt it as a disgruntled LGBT.

"no evidence to suggest it was a politically motivated crime"

She was bludgeoned to death.
This wasn’t a ‘beating up’.

"no evidence to suggest it was a politically motivated crime"

Well they would say that wouldn’t they.
Just like Rudakabana was a Welsh choirboy.

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 10/07/2026 17:54

The police at the press conference have said it is not being treated as terrorism.

Jo Cox's murder WAS treated as terrorism.

This strongly suggests non-political motivation.

Glad to hear they have already arrested a suspect.
