What will happen between the US and Canada?

I’m in the U.K. but have been following events in the US with mounting disbelief at Trump’s behaviour.

I see today Trump has increased the tariffs on Canada to 50% and is threatening to stick tariffs on car imports from Canada that will “shut down” their industry. Trump has also reiterated the fact that Canada WILL become part of the US.

Canada has reacted strongly so far and has again today said that there will be a response to the latest tariff announcements.

I have to be honest, much as I understood the U.K. attempt to flatter Trump to try and ease global tensions, there’s a large part of me that’s cheering on Canada’s refusal to back down.

What do people think is likely to happen? Can Canada sustain their “fuck you” response to Trump or will they eventually have to back down? Is there any genuine chance that the US will be able to annexe Canada?

I’d appreciate hearing people’s thoughts as this is all fascinating, albeit awful.

There needs to be world moratorium on Trump. India and China are on the receiving end of the tariff weaponisation too. We should all get together in some fashion and literally demand his removal from office. No trade and no tourism allowed until the lunatic is removed. Humouring him politely and strategically just makes his supporters believe he’s in the right. They need to see how much the rest of the world actually disrespects him in order to wake up.

Is he crazy enough to invade Canada? Would the US army obey or would there be civil war?
He Is so thick he doesn't realise the US car industry gets its parts from Canada and Mexico, the Americans will be paying the tariffs!

There was an ex US army General saying that the US armed forces would refuse to invade Canada and that would bring him down.
Agree that we should remind him that the King is King of Canada and any more threats will be met with a withdrawal of the invitation of the State visit.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm also really perplexed by Trump's behaviour here. What is he trying to achieve? Surely he doesn't ACTUALLY want Canada to join the USA as a state? He seems to be antagonising them for nothing - or at least, nothing obvious. A distraction?

He's just seeing how far he can go and who will actually go along with what he says, however outrageous. I wouldn't say he actually has any goals, it's all a sick game to him.

No average US citizen has any interest in "annexing" Canada, Greenland or any other country for that matter.

I'm a Brit living in Canada and everyone is in utter disbelief at Trump

The shelves are empty of US wine and no one is buying the cheap Florida strawberries and celery from the States!

I think this will lead his supporters to support him more. Unfortunately ( because some Americans didn't vote for him) they need to suffer in the pocket as a direct result of Trumps policies- job losses, higher food prices etc. The US Forestry has had to close some National Parks because Musk sacked too many rangers. They then had to hire back a load of people, but his cult followers don't see that. They see Trump sacked people ' doing nothing' and then in their eyes, nothing happened when in reality they've basically fired people for show then had to hire them back. Hopefully they demanded a pay rise!

Fair enough... But when will Trump stop? It's not like the general population has any say about his decisions

apart from their voting for him

Vitriolinsanity · 11/03/2025 20:08

I can't think why Canadians aren't in the streets full-throat embracing the notion. Who doesn't want to be part of the maddest country on the planet?

ItisIbeserk · 11/03/2025 20:10

He's approaching this like an aggressive company acquisition. Trump hasn't worked out that there's a big difference between business and world politics. He thinks if he shouts and squeezes long enough he'll get what he wants with no lasting repercussions.

If the pressure of the Presidency does for him, and I suspect he was on the edge even before the election, we are faced with Presidence Vance. Who is not mad, just evil. I'm coming round to just evil now in preference, as he at least doesn't have a self destruct button that could blow us all up with him. What a choice.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 11/03/2025 20:14

Canada buys more from the US than any other country. Trump would be a muppet to want to rock that boat. The US has more to lose than Canada does.

Tinseltuttifruitti · 11/03/2025 20:17

@coxesorangepippin apparently the US military has quietly hated him for years because he doesn't respect any chain of command, so I think the scenario @coxesorangepippinmentioned is likely, and the only thing that would stop him.

The Dow took a hit. I'm not sure the Donald understands that economics isn't The Apprentice

valder · 11/03/2025 20:34

The Marmalade Moron does NOT have dementia. That's an insult to those who actually suffer from this. Imagine any of our relatives with vascular dementia or alzheimers being considered as crazy as him. He is just hopping a ball, throwing fits, and saying all kinds of shite to cause chaos. A bit Musk like if you ask me.

For instance he announced tariffs, then rescinded them for one month (I think), now he's off again, I'm sure to follow with another delay, while awaiting a capitulation which won't happen. He's all mouth and no trousers. I'd laugh in his face TBH but I'm not the PM of a targeted country either.

I'm hoping he'll just run out of ideas. Very soon his ability to shock will be gone because the follow through is not happening. I see his shenanigans with Zelensky as another rehearsed drama, just for Putin's singular audience. It wasn't real. Look at me Vlad, I'm sorting out Z for you, we are great buddies aren't we? Meanwhile things go on as planned and not much changes. But Putin might think he is his ally or something.

My fevered brain won't accept that the man and his advisors are as trigger happy as they sound. Bullies, yes, but when faced down well we know how bullies react to that.

TeenLifeMum · 11/03/2025 20:38

In January the more right wing party was winning the polls in Canada (their Conservative Party rather than extreme right) but now the liberals are winning since Trump has scared voters to the left for fear of aligning policies with Trump.

Mrsgreen100 · 11/03/2025 20:41

Trump is an idiot. He needs a Canada for a start. They get all the Timber from Canada. What a crazy man.
he’s gonna call cause a recession in America and globally unless we all stick together and freeze him out

They also hate him because he’s a draft dodger.

CaveMum · 11/03/2025 21:20

Trump is about “headlines”. He’s a reality tv star and thinks he needs to keep generating content to keep The Base (which FYI he does not think of as a political base, but more a fan base) happy.

The administration are following the Bannon approach of “flood the zone with shit”. If he keeps pushing out all these ridiculous orders/proclamations people don’t know which way to turn and it allows them to push through their more nefarious agenda - see Project 2025.

Ultimately, Trump’s #1 motivating factor is making as much money for himself as possible. He isn’t an ideologue, he has no “plan”, he doesn’t even want power - just money.

That would be illegal. A moratorium by any means but enforced regime change is against international law. The rest of the world needs to be better than him, not the same.

GildedRage · 12/03/2025 02:44

both politicians and both parties suggested decreasing our reliance on american trade. so i expect trade with other countries will increase.
as a big country sometimes it's easier to use usa or chinese imports vs transporting from the east to west coast, so i think the country plans on facilitating improved infrastructure from east to west. both parties are keen to improve the military (although recruitment is an issue).
i look forward to hearing both party leaders discuss this (elections by law before october, but signs seem to suggest the liberals will call the election sooner than later).
trump's power and aggressiveness is painful.

That's interesting, I was wondering if he had the backing of the military. I think a lot of police are pissed off with the pardon given to the Jan 6 rioters.

Yes, I have Canadian family, and my Facebook is flooded with lists of produce Canadians can buy instead of US produce. They are getting a lot of support from Americans.
