What will happen between the US and Canada?

I’m in the U.K. but have been following events in the US with mounting disbelief at Trump’s behaviour.

I see today Trump has increased the tariffs on Canada to 50% and is threatening to stick tariffs on car imports from Canada that will “shut down” their industry. Trump has also reiterated the fact that Canada WILL become part of the US.

Canada has reacted strongly so far and has again today said that there will be a response to the latest tariff announcements.

I have to be honest, much as I understood the U.K. attempt to flatter Trump to try and ease global tensions, there’s a large part of me that’s cheering on Canada’s refusal to back down.

What do people think is likely to happen? Can Canada sustain their “fuck you” response to Trump or will they eventually have to back down? Is there any genuine chance that the US will be able to annexe Canada?

I’d appreciate hearing people’s thoughts as this is all fascinating, albeit awful.

sorry the "51state" stuff has been threatened before and is not a joke and can't be assumed to be. the usa has blocked our attempts to buy military equipment.
tariffs will be resolved just like nafta and cusma.

It’s not a joke but it’s not going to happen either. It’s like a bully tactic, he’s taking the piss out of Canada, asserting his dominance and enjoying the fall out.

This isn’t really true. Canada would get NATO assistance and the UK would be part of that of course but the Commonwealth is not a factor in mutual defence. We’re both in Five Eyes but of course so is the US and that is about intelligence not military force.

With respect, @ItisIbeserk , you really think that the UK would stand by and do nothing were the US to invade a Commonwealth country?

GildedRage · 16/03/2025 00:47

@Odras regardless of his real intentions his comments have caused a lot of stress and worry.

MC has said at the ceremony where he became interim pm that although it's nice to hear that other politicians stand with us it's not necessary that we can manage on our own (which in some ways was calming to hear).

If that country was a NATO member, like Canada, then the military response would come via that route. If not, then there is no reason why the UK would be involved outside a UN effort. Do you know which countries are in the Commonwealth and how many of them have seen conflict in which the UK has played no part? The Commonwealth is not a defence union.

Just read this comment in an article about Trump - At the very least, Trump could emulate Putin if his territorial ambitions are frustrated and start a military build-up along the border. Incursions and fighting could not be ruled out after that.

how many have been invaded? I know Grenada, but i would be interested to know about others

ItisIbeserk · 16/03/2025 10:51

I think I’ll leave the research to you as my Sunday is all about my novel today, and countries have a habit of joining and leaving the Commonwealth over time! Purely off the top of my head I’d offer Uganda, India and Pakistan (complicated potentially by India and Pakistan invading each other). And as you say, Grenada was invaded by the US. The point however is that the Commonwealth is NOT connected to any military defence agreement.

Thank god for all the hockey kids in the neighbourhood. I have dancers.

although considering the rest of Canada forgets my province exists, and America absolutely forgets that the state I’m attached to exists, I’m probably fine.

New Brunswick...?!

GildedRage · 16/03/2025 17:14

we could batch cook some nanaimo bars and lace them with some (legal) THC then provide large sums of nibbly foods to distract them. or simply burn the marijuana grow ops and blow the smoke south? we could vary the electrical power sent so all their clocks go both slow and fast, slower by day and faster by night?

Parker231 · 16/03/2025 17:20

Someone suggested cutting off their electricity one day a week ( would need to be different day each week and no advance announcement) and cutting off oil on another day.

Hm. Double goodie. Living literally 5 minutes from the border is gonna be a real treat if shit goes down, eh?

Hiptothisjive · 08/02/2026 22:18

Of course we can and we will. I am Canadian and no one I know will just roll over and just let Trump in. Over our dead bodies. Seriously.

And to those who like the softly softly approach from the UK maybe it’s worth saying that Charles is the king of our country too. We are part of the commonwealth and fought in both wars and didnt have to.

I am ashamed at the UK response. There is no special relationship (we all laugh at this that the UK would get so excited) and there certainly ain’t now. Anyone with a brain knew Trump
would turn on whomever he fancies and I thank God we have Carney now.

Yeah we may be small in population but we have decimated certain places for tourism, we have taken billions out of their pockets in terms of alcohol for example and iIf Trump wants to continue being this ridiculous Doug Ford (premier of Ontario) wilL tuen off all
power to millions of Americans (yes millions we supply energy to millions of Americans).

It’s time to take a stand against this bully. Otherwise we enable the behaviour.

We’re an hour from the border and no longer go over for lunch and shopping. We’re checking where the products we buy come from and buy locally.
I’d love for the electricity to be turned off - can you imagine Trump’s response - although would feel sorry for the people suffering in the cold especially at the moment.

Well that would be the time to do it. Mega cold right now. Great job otherwise! My parents live very close to the border and have said the bridge is almost empty every time the go by. They have nexus so would pop over but have completely stopped now. A lot of their friends have sold their homes in Florida, Arizona etc.

Winning the hockey would feel a bit awesome right now and can you believe that Canadian tears as? They have no shame.

Each day that the US hasn't attacked us in some way is a good day.
I hope we can arm up and get our own major projects going quickly.
Personally I believe Trump is a major global embarrassment, his level of corruption is staggering. Once you see all these major loopholes in the US constitution it just can't be unseen.

I'm seeing a lot of articles about Canada curtailing their visits/purchases across the American border.
Good. Keep up the good work.

Not just a global embarrassment. A global threat!
