Why do some people think Trump is a good man?

There are a lot of people, even in the UK who act like you have offended their mum or dad if you point out what an awful person he clearly is. Even his own family don't like him and plenty of people have said how his relationships with his own children are merely transactional.

If people like him, is it because they are fascists themselves deep down? Or is it some type of mass hysteria?

To clarify, I'm not asking why people voted for him, I'm asking why some people act offended at the assertion that he's a lying sociopath who incited an insurrection.

I would have thought that was obvious. People don't like being told they're stupid and vote for lying sociopaths. (See Brexit)

CabbagesAndCeilingWax · 16/11/2024 20:38

I heard on R4 that less than a third of Americans who voted Republican are ardent trump supporters. And of that third, I don't think many of them are under the illusion that he's a nice guy. I just think he's the sort of not-very-nice guy who they think would be good to have on their side.

Lyannaa · 16/11/2024 20:38

Most people who voted for Brexit are now whining to me about how much their shopping costs.

People want simple solutions. Even when those simple solutions are heinous. Deport immigrants and your problems will be solved. Build a wall and you'll have jobs. Make America great again. Vote for Brexit and the health service will be saved (oops, sorry, wrong country). Speak to people's self-interest and don't spare blaming somebody else for their problems. It's a winning formula.

That's because they're the whining classes.

Because there are news channels in the US who support him. They must heavily censor what they put out because my friend, who used to live in Texas, was a Trump supporter before she moved back to the UK… she couldn’t believe some of the stuff he came out with when she saw footage of him here!

That’s really interesting. Did she really not know?

Coconutter24 · 16/11/2024 20:50

Why do some people think Trump is a good man?

Why do you think he isn’t?

MushMonster · 16/11/2024 21:13

I do not think people think he is a good person per se. But I think they appreciate that he speaks the truth of his intentions and mind, at times when many politicians keep taking more u-turns that humanely possible. As an example, he said he would build a wall and he built it.
I think wgat you observe is the consequences of much of the media and democrats stating that only thick as mince people could possibly vote for Trump. So, obviously, they are going to feel touchy about this.
Most USA voted republican. They will have to come up with some other explanation, won't they? Certainly, the republicans are offering a better solution to the problems the population faces.

SallyWD · 16/11/2024 21:17

I genuinely believe that not many think he's a good man but they love what he stands for, and they despise the "woke" people he stands against

PureBoggin · 16/11/2024 21:19

Because he reflects their fears and concerns back to them. They think he tells the "truth".

FrippEnos · 16/11/2024 21:35

Most of the time its because those that start these types of conversation start by saying that those that vote for him must be racist and thick, so why would they even engage?

Notaflippinclue · 16/11/2024 21:39

Because he says he will - deport undocumented migrants, tax cuts, cut climate regulations, end the war in Ukraine, pardon some of the J6 rioters, sack Jack Smith, end the pushing of gender nonsense in schools and the military and enshrine in law sex is binary. Lots of other stuff but this looks good to voters after the last 4 years.

Why do some people think Trump is a good man?

Why do you think he isn’t?

Because he’s a convicted felon and a rapist.

SweetSixty · 16/11/2024 22:10

I'm asking why some people act offended at the assertion that he's a lying sociopath who incited an insurrection.

The biggest Trump fan I know has been so brainwashed by conspiracy theory sites that he sees Trump as the true hero who has been the victim of a campaign of lies put about by a liberal cable who seek to control the universe.

According to him Trump isn't a racist - he had a black girlfriend don't you know. Trump's incitement of insurrection was a brave response to a corrupt elite who stole his leadership. Trump loves women - the grab 'em by the pussy thing was just boys being boys/deep fake tape etc etc etc.

To him Trump is the saviour of the people and anyone who questions that needs to 'open their eyes to the truth' and stop being bewitched by the fake climate news driven lefty, woke media.

Utter batshit.

Honestly, no.

Those who knew her were astounded by her support for him whilst she was there!

@GentleFlower but surely people who absorbed all that information would also know about the rape/assults, grab 'em by the pussy comment, the Stormy Daniels adultery whilst Melania was caringfor a baby, the batshit lawsuits coming out of his ears, the 'I'm the father on IVF' bull etc?

They must have just ignored the downsides.

I take an election to be voting for someone's job so which person would I think better for the job of the 2 candidates and would vote for that

It is not a popularity contest to me

Echobelly · 16/11/2024 22:48

I think some people see him as 'anti establishment' and as a needed 'outsider' and for them that's enough to make him a good guy.

I am personally very well up for people who aren't 'professional politicians' and with life and business experience being in politics, but that doesn't mean people like Trump. Trump is absolutely only in it for Donald Trump. He doesn't want to actually make people's lives better. He wants veneration and worship and he knows he doesn't actually have to do anything positive to get that - he just has to punch down at vulnerable groups and then people can be distracted from the fact that their lives are not getting any better. I could even see the benefits of having a conman in charge of your country if he were wily, clever, good at reading others and playing people, but all Trump's one trick is hiring smaller businesses, refusing to pay them and having more expensive lawyers so he never has to pay them, which is a basic and dumb as gets.

Also a lot of people want to identify with powerful people because they think this will help make them rich/powerful, but they don't understand that the last thing those at the top want is to make more people rich and powerful, especially poor and disempowered ones. But they think rich people must be clever and better, even if all they did was get born rich (see also Elon Musk) and surely they'll want the best for everyone.

Those are quite some downsides to be ok with.

And look how that ended for Johnson and the country.

People never learn.

Why do some people think Trump is a good man?

Why do you think he isn’t?

Oh come on. Even if you think he'll be good at being president, no one who brags about sexual assault is a good man.

People who think he'll make a better president than Harris would have but who don't really like him/his personality are far more sensible than people who think he's a wonderful and decent man who will manage to (in his words) "solve every problem in America". Any politician in any country who says "I can solve every problem" is either a liar or a complete idiot.
