Why America voted for Trump, a simple, sane summary

Bippy2024 · 08/11/2024 10:30

This is why Trump won so resoundingly - this is why 72 million Americans voted for him - in one of his voter's own words.

If you choose to monster and slur 72 million people, that's saying a lot about you. Every accusation is a confession.

"I know a lot of people who voted for Trump. Let me tell you their reasons.
They wanted a return to normalcy. Gender ideology is just too out there. They want to protect women and children.

The economy has been disastrous for them. They didn’t have a cushion to absorb the inflation. They are cutting out everything in their lives just to afford food. And some are cutting that out.

Their lives have gotten very small. When they tried to tell you, they were told they shouldn’t splurge on things like a frozen pizza.

They see people coming illegally into this country and being handed stuff. Their stuff. Their money is being handed over. They have nothing. They watch as others are just handed more than they have.

They can’t afford rent and don’t know what to do. More people fighting for the same housing units makes prices rise.

They see a frightening turn towards censorship. They value the first amendment. Remember, it’s very important. They are so tired of being lied to and called terrible names.

Every time the mainstream media made up a story to make people hysterical they rolled their eyes. This pushed more and more people away. They stopped having any faith in the media. A firing squad? Really?

They feel the hysteria is toxic and frightening. Again they want this all to calm down.

They watch as political protests are punished for only one side. They see crime running rampant.

They see the people who try to protect us from crime being punished. The criminals go free to re-offend.

Essentially, they want their children to be healthy, they want their family to be fed, they don’t want endless war, they want things to be fair, they want the bad guys punished and the good guys appreciated, they want to protect women and children.

I hope if you are frightened today you will hear me. I hope I can help you see that things are not dire. I hope I can help you see that these were regular everyday folks who want regular everyday things. Food, clothing, shelter, privacy, respect for boundaries.

That’s it. Just those things. Peace."

I wonder- do those currently raging against the result not believe in democracy?
Because the demos / the people have spoken and it is up to everyone now to settle down and accept the choice of the people.

I wonder - do those saying that the people who are unhappy with Trump's win should shut up, not believe in free speech?

Yes, Trump won. Who knows, maybe this time round he really will Make America Great Again despite his marked failure to do so last time. I await details of his replacement for the ACA with interest.

But I'm sure that you and I can point to a number of names of people who've won elections in the past who turned out to be wrong'uns and for whom a lot more scrutiny and suspicion should have been applied way earlier.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/11/2024 13:43

@Bippy2024 I do think there's a big element of not understanding 'why' grocery prices are high etc - it's more of an international issue and follows on from war and shortages in certain things and yes climate change too on many goods- especially imports. It's not a directive 'let's make groceries cost more' - I know fuel has gone up a lot in USA and in a country with little public transport that's a biggy and impacts on logistics costs of goods from A to B - I'm not sure why it's rocketed in USA , I've not read into that. The problem with immigration in US is that yep it's ridiculous levels but then again it's country who kind of rely on those immigrants doing the shitty jobs and has very poor controls of its black economy too- you have to invest hard cash to get those controls sorted and too many very well off people are invested in utilising that labour. I don't think it will be as bad as some think however those poorer people expecting some kind of miraculous change in their circumstances, don't think that will happen either. As I say I think both were lousy candidates in totally different ways -

What's the reference to the firing squad please?

Not 100 percent sure, but I think it's this - Trump said of Liz Cheney "She's a very dumb individual, very dumb. She's a radical war hawk. Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. OK? Let's see how she feels about it, you know when the guns are trained on her face"

This was apparently part of Trump's broader criticism of Cheney's stance on military engagement as she is more pro war than he is. And anyway apparently the media ran with "Trump says Cheney should face a firing squad".

This might not be right tbh, but it's what I have been able to find.

@Bippy2024

2016 : Hilary Clinton 65.8m votes ~ Donald Trump 62.9m votes
2020 : Joe Biden 81.3m votes ~ Donald Trump 74.2m votes
2024 : Kamala Harris 69.0m votes ~ Donald Trump 73.4m votes

Why did 12 million Democrats stay home ?
They DID NOT switch to Trump
they stayed home.

I mean, it doesn't really matter? Maybe they think the Dems are rubbish but couldn't bring themselves to vote for Trump. I don't know.

I just felt obliged to say your statement...

"Remember - and this is a fact - every accusation is a confession. Every single slur, insult and sneer you aim at this woman and the other 72 million people who chose this path is a reflection only, and solely, of you."

...is just total bollocks.

Saying someone is racist does not make you racist.

Saying someone is stupid does not make you stupid.

Saying someone is poor does not make you poor.

Saying someone is a liar isn't necessarily a lie.

Saying someone is supporting a fascist ideology does not make you a fascist.

Etc etc.

It's lucky nobody said they should shut up on this thread.

Acceptance of the democratic process, an ability to lose without becoming mentally unstable and without screeching slurs at your fellow citizens is what I would hope for.

But I believe in free speech, so if people want to have a screaming, weeping cry fest melt down on Tik Tok and call everyone a rAcIsT bIgOt! That's up to them.

It's hardly helpful though and if they direct it at people individually, could lead to being sued for defamation as free speech has never covered criminal acts.

Yep, this is a fact.

If you are branding 72 million Americans as racist bigots it's because you are a racist bigot. If you're screaming NAZI FASCIST at people you have never met or spoken to, you are, in fact a Nazi Fascist. If you are calling 72 million strangers a liar, it's because you are a liar.

Poor isn't a slur or an insult, so irrelevant.

Projection is real.

I won't respond to this again, because I believe what I have said wholeheartedly and have no more at all to say on that subject.

I am sure the 72 million people who voted for him will be deeply saddened to hear you think this.

Yank here. The "felony" charges were widely seen as lawfare and would never have been charged as anything other than dodgy bookkeeping for anyone other than Trump.

https://www.npr.org/2024/05/30/g-s1-1848/trump-hush-money-trial-34-counts

So the "felonies" were deceptive bookkeeping.

Lots of Americans think that the democrats are more of a threat to democracy than Trump is. And if you don't believe, me read about it in The Economist.

https://www.economist.com/united-states/2024/11/07/democrats-need-to-understand-americans-think-theyre-worse

Trump is found guilty on 34 felony counts. Read the counts here

A New York jury found former President Donald Trump guilty of 34 felony counts of falsified business records. Here, NPR breaks down the charges.

Similar number of voters or more than the total population in the U.K.
A much bigger country where states are the sizes of countries in Europe and much bigger. A country where they fend for themselves without the state supporting the majority. So being hungry and cold after working very hard does not leave room for nonsense campus politics. They can’t get it in here. It won’t stop the spread of misinformation and apocalyptic narratives. Even though it was democratic and fair and square.

I hope they can heal and unite.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/11/2024 14:26

@ThatsNotMyTeen I'm afraid I think that too- he's just a much better bullshitter - the fact is the US relies on a lot of cheap labour and it's wealthy people who take advantage in the main of using that labour- economic things to a large extent are also impacted by international events outside of the US too . If he tones down the 'woke' aspects too- then personally I can live with that- some of it has gone way too far

In the case of the US right those morons who don't listen and go straight for slurs unfortunately include the new president.
