Why America voted for Trump, a simple, sane summary

Bippy2024 · 08/11/2024 10:30

This is why Trump won so resoundingly - this is why 72 million Americans voted for him - in one of his voter's own words.

If you choose to monster and slur 72 million people, that's saying a lot about you. Every accusation is a confession.

"I know a lot of people who voted for Trump. Let me tell you their reasons.
They wanted a return to normalcy. Gender ideology is just too out there. They want to protect women and children.

The economy has been disastrous for them. They didn’t have a cushion to absorb the inflation. They are cutting out everything in their lives just to afford food. And some are cutting that out.

Their lives have gotten very small. When they tried to tell you, they were told they shouldn’t splurge on things like a frozen pizza.

They see people coming illegally into this country and being handed stuff. Their stuff. Their money is being handed over. They have nothing. They watch as others are just handed more than they have.

They can’t afford rent and don’t know what to do. More people fighting for the same housing units makes prices rise.

They see a frightening turn towards censorship. They value the first amendment. Remember, it’s very important. They are so tired of being lied to and called terrible names.

Every time the mainstream media made up a story to make people hysterical they rolled their eyes. This pushed more and more people away. They stopped having any faith in the media. A firing squad? Really?

They feel the hysteria is toxic and frightening. Again they want this all to calm down.

They watch as political protests are punished for only one side. They see crime running rampant.

They see the people who try to protect us from crime being punished. The criminals go free to re-offend.

Essentially, they want their children to be healthy, they want their family to be fed, they don’t want endless war, they want things to be fair, they want the bad guys punished and the good guys appreciated, they want to protect women and children.

I hope if you are frightened today you will hear me. I hope I can help you see that things are not dire. I hope I can help you see that these were regular everyday folks who want regular everyday things. Food, clothing, shelter, privacy, respect for boundaries.

That’s it. Just those things. Peace."

Why did Trump win?

  • Misinformation and propaganda online, most likely financed by Russia and increasingly creating division and discord though the Western world.
  • Low levels of education in many areas of the US. Illiteracy is staggeringly high.
  • The economy. It has not been managed well, inflation is high, and people are struggling.
  • Religious extremism being a cultural norm.

There are many more reasons, but those are the main ones. We think we're similar because of the shared language and media, but the US is massively different to the UK.

How does that explain Trump getting less votes than he did in 2020 ?

Fewer.

Perhaps Republicans who couldn't bring themselves to vote for him? I don't know the answer to that - voting levels change all the time.

Labour currently aren't doing themselves any favours and the people of this country will remember how they have acted to quell any voice that dares to argue with them. If they won't confront these issues then the next election will see a landslide for either reform or reform plus Tories as a coalition. .I'm sorry. I know that's an awful prospect but that's what is going to happen if Labour don't address the real issues that people are worried about.

Labour won't address the issues because they think that they know best and think that they are right. Just like the Democrats.

The Democrats thought that their Black and Latino voters did not care about immigration and took their votes for granted and would not listen to people when they said that it mattered.

Harris got 12 million fewer votes than Biden
so its not like she benefited ...

North Korea has been rattling its sabre for 70 years. This was nothing new. Kim should have been patted on the head and ignored. Instead, he had Trump fly over, fluff his ego make him look like a serious player.

But you're right, I can't imagine Starmer (or Badenoch) doing that because it was a fucking stupid and pointless thing to do. The only person who came out of that in a stronger position than they went in was Kim.

BTW if you think NK will give up its nuclear weapons programme because of Trump or anyone else then you're delusional.

LadyRoughDiamond · 08/11/2024 17:19

If you create a society that requires a high level of income to survive, with no real government safety net, expensive healthcare and expensive higher education; then add in rising housing and food costs, don’t be surprised when people vote for the candidate making economic promises. Britain: be warned.

@IMustDoMoreExercise interesting point about the Hispanic and African American votes. I saw a clip on CNN and it was a Hispanic lady saying the Democrats banked on their votes and assumed they supported their immigration policies but she said they and their grandparents etc had to apply legally and go through due process to enter the country and they believe others should do the same

I think the Democrats lost a fair bit of their base, and took quite a few votes for granted

You're missing the point because you misunderstand North Korea and its position in global politics.

North Korea is all bluster. Its economy is fucked to an extent that is difficult to comprehend and a war wouldn't improve that. Its armed forces are relying on weapons that are so far from the state of the art it's frankly embarrassing. Sure, it's got a lot of bodies in uniforms but they're so ill-equipped they're useless against even a moderately prepared opponent. It's got absolutely no chance in a proper all-out war. All Kim can do is make baseless threats to prop up his image within NK and to hopefully persuade other countries to give them some aid here and there to hopefully stave off mass starvation.

Kim knows this. Starmer knows this. Badenoch knows this. Biden knows this. Even "nice but dim" Bush Jr and "should've kept it in his pants" Clinton knew this. Every fucker who could point to NK on a map two times out of three knows this... with the exception of Trump. Trump took Kim's empty threats seriously and thought it'd make him look brave and powerful to go over there. All it did was waste Trump's time he could've spent on the golf course while making Kim look like a serious player who can command the US president to spend days of his precious time travelling to NK and back.

Trump going there achieved nothing. But it was an absolute propaganda coup for Kim.

Bippy2024 · 08/11/2024 21:47

For the person who keep crapping on about how many million votes Trump got - who cares? It was a resounding victory and a clear mandate, maybe people didn't vote cos they thought the Dems were crap and couldn't vote for Trump. Nobody knows and it doesn't matter.

For those who managed to stay civil and on point, I appreciate an adult conversation. So sick of the screaming hysterics and monstering of anyone who doesn't vote left. It's time the left learned that shouting RACIST BIGOT PHOBIC at their opponents just loses votes - though that's not why I stopped voting left. Yep, always did until the last election. If you thin that's a lie, I assume you're someone who just lies and believes everyone else does too.

I haven't had a chance to read through the thread properly but will try to do so later. Appreciate those adults having adult discussions, nice change on Mumsnet.

Isn't it fascinating how you call those who disagree with you uncivil while simultaneously describing them as sneery, screaming, hysterical, thick as fuck, frothing, foaming and screeching?

It almost smells like... hypocrisy.

Ok. So you think that NK's economy isn't a dumpster fire, that its military isn't equipped with arms that are laughably out of date, and that NK is in a strong position on the world stage.

Please explain to me what, precisely, Trump achieved by going to NK. What bluff was called that couldn't have just as easily been ignored?

Isn't it fascinating that nowhere did I say that those who disagree with me are any of those things, but you project that meaning on to what I actually said?

So, to be clear, if you're not hysterical, thick as fuck, sneery, screaming and slurring people wildly I wasn't referring to you - whatever your beliefs and views. But I find those that do that irritating and unhelpful.

But that was already obvious of course :)

Jamming words into someone else's mouth is another deflect derail and shout into submission tactic. And yes, you are doing that. I can't stop you from doing that, and it doesn't matter to me at all:)

I came here to make an important point, and it is well made. Many have read it. Some will think about it. Not you, obviously ;)

Must fly, busy.

At the end of the day the facts are the Americans had a presidential election and the electorate voted. That was their right.

In fairness they had a poor choice of selecting whom to vote for but that’s not their fault.

The result came about for a lot of reasons and I think there are too many in this country who don’t understand the dynamics of it all.

There are too many to go into. But a good starting point is that the Democrats didn’t have a good term in office. Not to mention they had a President who obviously became unfit for office with severe cognitive decline. But throughout everyone was told he’s fine which was obviously such a blatant lie. Then to have the temerity to say he’s standing for another term when it’s obvious he can’t actually fulfill the fundamental function of the existing presidential term he’s serving really is simply beyond belief. Then to expect people to vote for a party that suddenly realises that they can’t uphold this lie anymore and needs to swap their presidential candidate for their deputy (without going through the primary process that is normal) and to have a candidate who can’t spell out effective policy is a recipe for failure.

Couple all of this with a man who understands that the economy is the key driver of what people will vote for and tells the people he’s going to do xyz to make their lives better and it’s easy to ignore his history and vote for him. They may not like what he stands for on some levels but they like some of it.

I think he’s loathsome but I can also see how the Democrats fucked this up big time. And I also think you need to go further back in time to 2016. They fielded the wrong candidate then in Clinton. Biden wanted to stand then and was blocked. If he had stood then he may well have won but Trump got in. If he hadn’t he might have stayed doing tv shows and his own empire. There’s always a chain reaction to things.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/11/2024 00:32

Trump clearly has cognitive decline, too. Why were there no calls for him to step aside as candidate?

friendlycat · 09/11/2024 00:52

Yes body these are things that too many people here don’t understand.

There have been tonnes of calls for him to step aside! Just not from Republicans, because he attracts votes. Like Boris did. Can’t stand either of them personally, but people do vote for them both in droves.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/11/2024 01:24

Honestly, I didn’t hear any during the campaign? Friends and I discussed several times how weird the silence on this was. He’s clearly losing it.

Maybe he just didn’t seem so bad compared to Joe 🤷‍♀️

Bloody hell, what a thing to be able to say about two presidential candidates. How TAF did it ever come to that?

If you google “Trump cognitive decline” you’ll find loads of articles in the Boston Globe, NYT, Las Vegas Sun, San Francisco Chronicle etc from around June.

I don’t know enough about American local newspapers to know if those are all strongly partisan democrat papers, or more evenhanded, but definitely lots of people discussing it, with quotes from various doctors saying it was dementia and quotes from his staff saying it was all totally fine.

DdraigGoch · 09/11/2024 04:12

The main reason is that America has a lot of problems (many of which are outside the control of the government, such as the inflationary impact of the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine) and he turns up claiming to have a solution to those problems. He doesn't of course, nothing that will work anyway. But no one else is offering an easy solution (because there isn't one) so they latch onto him. They'll get a shock when they see what the consequences of his punitive tariffs are.

bottomsup12 · 09/11/2024 04:44

Precisely and they also want to stop being patronised by people who are in the minority and yet think they know better?!
