Why America voted for Trump, a simple, sane summary

Bippy2024 · 08/11/2024 10:30

This is why Trump won so resoundingly - this is why 72 million Americans voted for him - in one of his voter's own words.

If you choose to monster and slur 72 million people, that's saying a lot about you. Every accusation is a confession.

"I know a lot of people who voted for Trump. Let me tell you their reasons.
They wanted a return to normalcy. Gender ideology is just too out there. They want to protect women and children.

The economy has been disastrous for them. They didn’t have a cushion to absorb the inflation. They are cutting out everything in their lives just to afford food. And some are cutting that out.

Their lives have gotten very small. When they tried to tell you, they were told they shouldn’t splurge on things like a frozen pizza.

They see people coming illegally into this country and being handed stuff. Their stuff. Their money is being handed over. They have nothing. They watch as others are just handed more than they have.

They can’t afford rent and don’t know what to do. More people fighting for the same housing units makes prices rise.

They see a frightening turn towards censorship. They value the first amendment. Remember, it’s very important. They are so tired of being lied to and called terrible names.

Every time the mainstream media made up a story to make people hysterical they rolled their eyes. This pushed more and more people away. They stopped having any faith in the media. A firing squad? Really?

They feel the hysteria is toxic and frightening. Again they want this all to calm down.

They watch as political protests are punished for only one side. They see crime running rampant.

They see the people who try to protect us from crime being punished. The criminals go free to re-offend.

Essentially, they want their children to be healthy, they want their family to be fed, they don’t want endless war, they want things to be fair, they want the bad guys punished and the good guys appreciated, they want to protect women and children.

I hope if you are frightened today you will hear me. I hope I can help you see that things are not dire. I hope I can help you see that these were regular everyday folks who want regular everyday things. Food, clothing, shelter, privacy, respect for boundaries.

That’s it. Just those things. Peace."

Unfortunately I think Harris was a poor choice of candidate against someone like Trump - I thought she was a poor speaker , don’t think I heard her give a good speech and her running partner actually came over far better- you need a terrier though against Trump, call out his bullshit but even more importantly needed to be addressing the very specifics people were anxious about - be that ‘too much woke’ or the economy .
Trump was a lousy choice and I’m disgusted the republicans allowed him to stand given his felon status at that point- but the opposition did themselves no favours either.

I think this thread hasn't aged too well. We are way past political squabbling. This is a matter of who accepts the end of liberal democracy in the US (replaced by an - at best- managed democracy, or even tyranny) and who stands up against it. This really shouldn't be a partisan issue.

Do you think guys posting things like this below are really suitable for a serious role? Not sure I would employ him as junior office. How unprofessional can you get!!

@SunshineOceanAndOranges oh I totally agree with you on that too- it was more a response to the OP - what I want to know is ‘where are the democrats’ ?? Or do they just hibernate between elections? It seems not very democratic to me not to have an opposition between elections

It sums up what I keep saying - Trump, his advisors and supporters are stupid and heaven help America!

@Bippy2024
The problem is that so many of the things you have stated are factually incorrect. To name but one, the economy was failing. The US economy was in the rudest health ever before Trump came in. The reason poor people feel poor is because of massive wealth inequality. This is being made worse by Trump etc al. They are cutting benefits, Medicaid etc.

The thing you said about criminals would be funny if it weren't so tragic. Trump is the only felon to be elected into his post. He makes Nixon seem like an upstanding citizen of truth. He has pardoned insurrectionists.

This is utter madness, not the voiceless 72m that you seem to want to believe. Personally, I think people have been manipulated by social media into voting for him.

If we are seeing a failure of anything, it's a failure of Capitalism which is scary and a potential change for the standing of the Western world.

Parker231 · 19/03/2025 14:26

Just seen this on X !

Alaska should be part of Canada. Canada helped build the Alaska Highway and without Canada, the US couldn't even reach Alaska. Alaska is blocking the mouth of Canadian rivers so it is a matter of national security. Many Alaskans agree.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/03/2025 14:40

@Parker231 I don’t think unless you have been to the states a fair bit (and I don’t just mean NY for a 4 day break ) that you can get how primitive it is in parts and the lack of even modest level education many get. To me it was like the 3rd world outside of the main urban centres or the very well off suburbs - I used to think the trailer trash stuff you read about was just a tiny minority but it wasn’t. I think also there has been a rise in the amount of younger people who see the American dream not coming to fruition, so we end up with a load of incels of the Andrew Tate variety and a load of women just looking for a cushy number that they can live off - because a combination of factors have made it that conventional ‘jobs’ and incredibly high expenses have meant that it’s hard to get by in many western country’s, but I think particularly the USA with its poor social support. So along comes Trump promising the moon on a stick if only we could get rid of those pesky Mexicans and get rid of lots of equal rights or protections and some simply suck it up!

the other end of the argument though is the very wealthy who don’t like to see anyone helped in any way if it’s not with their own cash- even basic healthcare is a moot point with some- they will always vote Republican and there’s plenty of them too.

We’re in Canada close to the border. Have spent a lot of time across the US for work and DSil lives there (although planning on leaving now). Pre Trump we would go over the border regularly for shopping/lunch.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/03/2025 15:05

@Parker231 yep just to say I was agreeing with you - the rest of my post was mainly to other posters who may not have visited the states much/ at all!!
I like Canada and most Canadians I’ve met-seems like it has the best bits of the US with a more European ethos- bugger off Trump is my view!!

CovenOfCheeses · 19/03/2025 22:46

He has removed protection from segregation. How was removing segregation a move too far left? If you think that segregation was a move too far left for you then there is something seriously wrong.
If you think threatening to lock people up for lying when they fact check Trump and refute his lies is extreme, there is something. Wrong.
if you think that there are moves to lock people up on mental institutes if they say something against Trump, due to this Trump derangement syndrome that they are talking about and is a move towards sanity, then there is something seriously wrong.

Nothing Trump is doing is sane or rational and anyone who thinks what he is doing h is a counterpoint to the wokeness that has captured western thinking really has to have a hard look at their sense of morality

You know this is fallacious.

The majority of the US population voted for a man who said he would impose tariffs, cosy up to dictators he liked, would seize land and assets he wanted, deport millions, ignore the rule of law, free people who committed crimes in his name,is a convicted rapist and felon and the American public voted for him? He scapegoated immigrants for losing jobs and low US wages however job loses and low wages have been caused by 3 factors; the rise of automation that has resulted in the loss of 80% of manufacturing job; the rise of high tech manufacturing which requires an educated workforce and cannot swallow up the least educated; and the destruction of unionised labour under Reagan and subsequent GOP Presidents that have pushed down wages due to a lack of collective bargaining. Housing has become unaffordable due to three factors; supply line issues caused by global issues stemming from the pandemic, issues in the Gulf with Israel and the Ukraine war; the lack of supply after the pandemic due to workforce issues; and the likes of Blackrock, Vanguard and many other private equity funds becoming the main purchasers of starter homes causing demand issues that have pushed up prices for housing as well as rent.

But people want to scapegoat immigrants and voted for Trump because they were either racist, gullible or ill informed.

Worth noting that the Senator who introduced the "Trump Derangement Syndrome" bill is a nonce:

Birds of a feather stick together.

A Minnesota State Senator has been arrested after allegedly soliciting a minor for prostitution just days after sponsoring a bill that would recognize "Trump derangement syndrome" as a legitimate mental illness.

We road tripped with our two young girls ( POC) across Arizona,Nevada, Utah and it’s a completely different world compared to the usual tourist areas. We were shocked to see confederate flags in the porches and the level of poverty . We have travelled all over the world and felt unsafe in certain parts of our trip.

Crikeyalmighty · 23/03/2025 16:07

@ProfessorLayton1 totally agree- it really isn’t what many people think it is - I kind of have a love/hate relationship with it -but I stand by my view that a lot of it is 3rd world - Michael moores book about this was incredibly accurate- it’s like for instance in West Hollywood they have a fantastic upmarket - supermarket -forgotten its name- but walking to get there even just 1/4 mile you may well have 3 or 4 total down and outs walking past you pushing empty trolleys with all their goods in them- it’s incredibly sad - far worse than anything I’ve seen in UK -

While staying in Seattle a few years back we drove through Aberdeen
(where Kurt Cobain grew up)
and 'crossed the tracks'.

Suddenly Grunge made utter sense

It's basically the same reason populism is taking off accross the world. Global capitalism doesn't work for those at the bottom. Industry has been automated or moved abroad. They have nothing and rather than calling this out they blame immigrants. It's an old playbook but a dangerous one. If it's not addressed ww3 could be a reality. Sparks dangerous and xenophobic narratives

Oh and thank you in advance to the sneery hysterics who have no actual argument for the 72 million people who chose Trump, except to try to mock and denigrate people they do not know and have no understanding of, and no actual ability to even try to understand.

Remember - and this is a fact - every accusation is a confession. Every single slur, insult and sneer you aim at this woman and the other 72 million people who chose this path is a reflection only, and solely, of you.

I just posted this because a few of you aren't as thick as fuck and actually might be curious. I don't care how much spewing you do. This is why they voted Trump, take it or take it, you can't leave it.

It doesn't matter whether you like it, or whether you froth, foam and screech about it. He's in. Get used to it.

Gosh OP, has someone said something to upset you. It all seems so personal. I'm sure you're a super clever individual, if it helps.

The thing is though, it's wealth inequality that has reduced living standards for probably most of Trump 's voters. It isn't immigration. Immigrants in the US don't get anything for free. Certainly not "their stuff".

You said something about his voters wanting their kids to be healthy, well RFK isn't doing particularly well on the measles front.

I get that you're angry, but to find solutions, you've got to look for the cause. Trump's administration may make it seem like there are simple answers, but I'm just not sure there are.

There are many places like that in WeHo and yes it's shocking. Homelessness in LA is a real issue with no solution in sight. It's also getting worse: reading up on it, it seems homelessness in 2023 was 70% higher than in 2015.

dubsie · 15/04/2025 08:50

People have lost the ability to read and make sound judgment. They have lost trust in science and the establishment because we've allowed fake news to pollute our homes through phones and junk media.

Look at the measles outbreak in Texas and then look at JFK junior. Then have a look online and see the rubbish being posted by people with absolutely no medical qualifications giving opinions as facts.

An opinion is just that and science has given us what we have today... antibiotics, vaccines, transplants, surgery etc etc. The day people stop trusting science is the day great nations fall. Our homes are full of technology that improves our lives and it was made by people who understand scientific principles. You heating, the fridge, electricity, microwaves. Why do people honestly think the MMR vaccines will do more harm than good.

We must get back to where we were and start teaching children that most of the stuff on X and YouTube is lies. A lot of adults need educating and all this non sense needs to be stopped. Anyone caught spreading baseless lies needs locking up.
