Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

He has since said he is not going to accept large gifts any more. However they've all done it at times. There definitely should be a cap on the cost of gifts.

It is time to move on from that, it didn't cost us anything and it's over.

Yes move along now. No need to pay attention to what our politicians get up to. We can trust them implicitly.

I hope that applies equally to all politicians of all parties. You know, to be fair.

Chersfrozenface · 26/09/2024 12:07

All it takes is some research on accomodation sites.

Short term rental for a property like that starts at £700 a night i.e. £4,900 a week, and heads upwards.

The figure Starmer used is the lowest figure for a long term rental.

The approximately six weeks he said the flat was lent for would be a short term rental.

Starmer just tried to deceive parliament and the public as to how much he is on the take. It's disgusting and plenty of kids go to the library to study peacefully.

Damage is done for them but I thought they'd only said no to clothes

The other stuff is still good to go

I thought he said no more free clothes, can you link? I personally don’t think the issue is the fact he’s had his hand out. For me it’s the lying about it. Boris was crucified for it. Now keir has rolled in and is doing the same shit.

they lied to get elected. They lie every time they put a policy in and blame the tories, they cream off the top and lie. But using your own kid is friggen low.

Cranto · 26/09/2024 13:18

It’s just so excessive.

How disruptive/out of control is Starmer’s household that they can’t tell the others living there to keep it down for a short period of time?

EasternStandard · 26/09/2024 13:08

Per the BBC

"It is not clear whether whether it [the new policy of not accepting donations for clothes] will apply to other donations in kind."
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwyvpv1lzq6o.amp

Silence on this aspect suggests that other freebies will indeed be good to go.

Oh, and in the BBC story, remarkably sensible words from Bernard Jenkin. Flippin' 'eck, what is the world coming to?

No he didn’t. The whole reason we know about it is because he declared it and it’s all on the Members’ Register website for anyone to see. However much you might argue it’s ethically wrong, no attempt has been made to deceive.

Notaflippinclue · 26/09/2024 13:31

It didn't cost us anything? The Government is in hock to some guy - why - what's he get in return?

justasking111 · 26/09/2024 13:35

No more clothes, so jewellery, watches, new kitchen, furniture, car, you're good to go.

Honestly Tories, labour, two sides of the same coin.

I wasn't going to vote at all after researching my contenders. We're in Wales. Poked into all their social media

Labour - dim as a night light
Tory - invisible, never bothered to move from Suffolk.
Liberal - spun like a weather vane
Green party - Pro farming, pro flood defence. She spoke my language so voted for her.

Labour landslide result. 🤷🤷

I agree, Blossom.

This issue (& others), was thoroughly aired in last week's Question Time. If you didn't see it, it's worth watching. I was particularly impressed by Tim Farron.

Then you haven’t read any of my other posts. My stance on this is clear. The clothes, glasses, etc are ridiculous and I’m bloody angry about such an unnecessary own goal. Furious in fact. The use of an empty flat for a month and the upgrade of an already paid for season ticket not so much.

I didn’t say he was only the leader of the opposition, I corrected you when you said the flat wouldn’t have been offered if he was leader of the opposition. This is what’s so incredibly frustrating about MN. The twisting of words and denial of saying something that’s there in black and white is so dishonest. Ironic really when the topic under discussion is dishonesty.

I actually it was me that you ‘corrected’ with your patronising eye roll.

You corrected a type! Well done you! And you actually didn’t address the point.

He wouldn’t have been offered that flat if he wasn’t the leader of the opposition. You read the whole post ignored it and then, instead of wondering ‘clearly he was the leader of the opposition, could that be a typo?’ You jumped in with ‘haha something I can say you are wrong on’

The pass does matter. Because it’s not given to anyone. He has been granted access whilst giving gifts. To many Labour MPs. Pretending he is just doing his mates a favour is ridiculous.

If you work on government contracts, you can’t accept gifts at all from clients or suppliers, certainly not gifts of any great value. There’s also tax implications on any sort of benefit in kind.

and KS is saying it was for his son so he can use the ‘I am not discussing my children with the press’ line that he loves. When in actual fact it wasn’t just his son. Who moves their 16 year old to flat further away from school, to live on their own during GCSEs? No one.

But if he had wanted to, given all the banging on about shit and corrupt the Tories are, he could have paid for it himself.

Oh come on Blossom, minimising it as "his mates spare room" its beneath you. Its a premium property in a premium location with a very high rental value as Starmer plainly knew when he logged it as value 20k. It was for six/seven weeks including several weeks after the all GCSEs had finished!

Read @Portalsalways post upthread - its spot on about the rules when engaging with public figures and contracts. I have to log every tiny "gift" of entertainment I pay for when any level of public official is involved. The odd coffee is just about the limit due to the risk not just of corruption but public trust being at risk.

Starmer used to run a government agency - the idea that he is ignorant about both the letter and the spirit of these rules is absurd. In some cases he was responsible for prosecuting the offenders.
Its also nonsense that random peers, MPs etc get passes to No 10. Planned visitors go on a day list for a specific time and recieve a temporary pass and need to be escorted. To get a regular pass you need to be approved as a regular access user working in the building. So what was Alli's regular job in Downing Street which required a regular pass?

It was wrong when Johnson thought the rules (or more accurately the spirit) didn't really apply to him and it was equally wrong and also stupid of Starmer to accept these kind of freebies . He doesn't even have the excuse of not having the money to put his own hand into his pocket like the rest of us.

Yes it has, he said it was for his son. But he had it well after GCSE’s.,so a blatant lie. He was also filmed in it twice and lied it was his own home.

Maurepas · 26/09/2024 13:44

Good old Starmer.

Do as I say, not do as I do.

Copper-plated, ocean-going hypocrite.

There are several posters on here who will defend him to the hilt, irrespective.

Yes I’m surprised at that, reminds me of the Harry and Megan threads, no matter what thy do someone defends it.

im fairly sure the posters defending it were first in line attacking when Boris had his hand out and was lying. But yet it’s ok for keir. Nah I don’t think so.

im stunned though, genuinely, I honestly thought him and raynor wouldn’t do this , I can’t beleive they’ve done it so so quickly and for so much money. Then hes lied through his teeth to cover it, up, and used his own kid too.

what is it someone said in the run up to the election. Kier has no strategy, he just really wants to be prime minister. I suspect that’s true. 5 years in office and he can fuck off out of it.

I actually agree with you. It was stupid and naive and I’m furious about it. But nonetheless it is within current rules and he did declare it. It’s only because they declared it all that we even know about it. So please berate them - because it’s not just Starmer - all you like for taking donations but accusations of deception are unwarranted.

By the way, I haven’t minimised any of it as a “mate’s spare room”, nonetheless using an empty flat is in no way the same as being given thousands of £.

If this were a Tory taking all these backhanders and freebies Labour would be going crazy shouting jobs for the boys, Tory Sleaze, corruption, old boys network etc. Yet here is Starmer taking tens of thousand of freebies, he's no different to any of the others. A pure 100% hippocrite.

It was all sticky taped together soundbites like my father was a toolmaker and people bought it as if it meant anything

The reality is image cultivation and freebies, power and pretty much laughing at anyone who has questioned this

Bad excuses and bad lies

At least it's coming back to bite. A year ago it was 'boring' now it's 'Liar'

They can try to spin boring to 'adults' nonsense. Liar - nope
