Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

I don't understand why a multimillionaire would struggle for space in their home to help their child study?
So he needed a separate accomodation, for several months?
Was he given access to a shed that was rented by the hour?
Did they rent him a space in a WeWork?
Put him up in an Air B&B?

It does sound bizarre. But no matter, I'm still delighted to see the back of the Tories.

Houseplanter · 25/09/2024 16:55

I am aghast tbh.

All that bollocks about understanding the working class. The constant talk of cronyism.

There should be a way of us sacking him because he deceived his way in to the job.

What a lying, weak, deceiving scum bag.

MrsMcGarry · 25/09/2024 16:56

Nobody handed over £20k.
Lord Alli, who happens to be a really rich man who wants a Labour government and is a personal friend of the Starmer’s let them stay in one of his properties that was quiet and secure so a 16 year old didn’t have to run gamut of press and protestors every day during he GCSE’s

the notional value of that donation had to be declared because starmer is an MP

Nobody handed over £20k, it’s the notional value of a borrowed property.

The principle and value is the same

The same as what?

He’s an absolute tosser.

Could not agree more, but also sanctimonious, vain, delusional, cruel and greedy.

The same as what?

The same as the fact he has once again used his position and taken full advantage of it. It’s so disingenuous.

I doubt it was for space per se.

It would have been for space away from doorstepping press and the like (and probably a fair few loons), along with less disturbance from people coming in and out and calling, etc, as part of the campaign - the one that was only in the middle of GCSEs because the other guy, whose kids were generally hundreds of miles away - and still subject to press and loon diversions, by the way - called it.

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 25/09/2024 17:12

He has mentioned being very aware of the difficulties of the election campaign and now him being PM for his children. If he was so concerned about them, maybe now wasn't the right time to go for this role. Instead he went for it, putting his own ambitions before his concern for his children, so he'll just have to deal with the public's disgust about him doing stuff like this.

I'm not sure why anyone would be shocked at a politician doing any of the stuff reported. As much as he tried to present himself as mr average person by going on about his parents normal jobs etc, he's far from it. He is not interested in helping anyone, he is as self serving as anyone else.

80smonster · 25/09/2024 17:12

Sounds like privilege being bought to me. Surely Kier Starmer has a moral obligation to pay the £20,000 himself? If that’s what he feels is best?

He didn’t have any position pre election. And that isn’t what disingenuous means.

There is no £20,000.

Why can't his son study at home?

Of course he had a position! He was the leader of the opposition, not some MP from a distant hamlet. You can’t seriously pursue that as a reasonable justification. Apologies, disingenuous wasn’t the word I was looking for, it was hypocritical.

You know he may have actually asked his children.

They aren't little any more.

There are quite a few current and former politicians who got involved in politics as younger teens than 16.

LipstickOnHisGuitar · 25/09/2024 17:18

There is no £20,000.

🙄

If his child needed a peaceful environment, then he could have afforded to pay for that. Instead he took another freebie.

Which is fine. But it's his problem to then manage. Going on about it to the public and taking freebies, expecting us to feel sympathy for a decision he made that put his kids in that position in the first place is too much for many of us I'm afraid, especially when he could have just quietly paid for a suitable house temporarily for his child to have peace.

I wondered when these words would start showing up in a word cloud and lo on googling there's already a savanta poll

The one word that came up the most was Liar

"The word cloud shows that "liar" is the most prominent response from the 2,000 people surveyed ahead of his keynote speech to the Labour conference."

For someone who constantly rubbished the polls before the election you’re putting a hell of a lot of credence in them now. What’s changed?
