Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

You, or any of your donors, should not be able to buy educational advantage for your child. All children should have access to luxury penthouses to get some peace to revise if it's noisy at home. I thought this was one of Labour's basis rules.

Can't berate him for this but I'll just stick it here so other people can have a go.

Newterm · 25/09/2024 15:50

Will he want another donation when his daughter takes her exams?

loulouljh · 25/09/2024 15:51

And meanwhile other kids will be leaving their private schools due to the VAT....

Arafon · 25/09/2024 15:56

I daresay he will get all sorts of special opportunities

Bromptotoo · 25/09/2024 16:38

Being candidate for parliament and heir apparent as PM is going to get a lot of attention including the press on your doorstep. Extra jeopardy if you really don't' want your kids over the front pages.

It would be better if our politicians didn't attract donations but that doesn't make accepting them automatically corrupt.

I really hope he paid VAT on this.

Spot on. Anyone who begrudges a kid a quiet room for revision when his dad’s constantly besieged by the media should really take a look at themselves.

Houseplanter · 25/09/2024 16:43

I just can't believe anyone can find this justifiable.

It's beyond me how anyone with any integrity can do this.

Surely there's tax implications at least. Perks of the job

What a corrupt, embarrassing government we have, no matter which party is in.

He’s an absolute tosser.

So, would that apply to the children of those that attract the media spotlight for less salubrious reasons as well then?

Moonshiners · 25/09/2024 16:45

I honestly couldn't give a shit about this. My son went and stayed at my parents house to get some peace and quiet. If you'd rented a room there it would have cost a about 150 quid a night on airbnb. Surely this is long the same lines?
Didnt Boris Johnson live in chequers for about six months after he was sacked? At the cost of the tax payer, thats more annoying.

Yeah I revised at my nan's because she'd sleep all afternoon and I'd get peace, or at my parent's office on a weekend.

Every kid does it

Of course. Why wouldn’t it?

Fintoo · 25/09/2024 16:47

Was Starmer really “constantly besieged by the media” though? I’m finding that a bit hard to believe tbh

What sort of quiet room for revision costs £20k? Don’t be so ridiculous.

Houseplanter · 25/09/2024 16:47

Bloody expensive room @BIossomtoes

RVEllacott · 25/09/2024 16:48

Lots of kids don't have quiet or suitable places to do their school work. Fortunately most schools and communities have libraries for this purpose. Not sure why Starmer junior needed a luxury flat instead.

Why would there be tax implications?

Donations are only corrupt if they're given in real expectations of gain.

If Lord Alli wants nothing more than for Labour to form the government and provides cash, goods or services to help achieve that end that's how our system works.

If there's an understanding, or even perhaps an expectation, of his getting contracts or favours then it's corrupt.

Maybe, just maybe, being Starmer junior makes it more difficult than using the school library.

BIossomtoes · 25/09/2024 16:50

The £20k is a notional figure. He borrowed someone else’s house or flat or whatever ever it was.

WinterMorn · 25/09/2024 16:51

BIossomtoes · 25/09/2024 16:46

Of course. Why wouldn’t it?

Well, not many would be willing to hand over £20k for the children of high profile criminals, for example, to buy some privacy. There’s no way of dressing it up, this is Starmer taking full advantage of his position.

All whilst other children’s education is impacted by the PM’s decision on private school’s VAT.

Nobody handed over £20k, it’s the notional value of a borrowed property.
