Can't berate Starmer for this but think some parents will be aghast.

At this point I have almost entirely given up on politics. There is no honesty, or integrity left. The conservatives were morally bankrupt and now we have this. Maybe not on as grand a scale but it is still very wrong.
All at a time when he has removed the winter fuel allowance whilst telling us all to prepare for hard choices.
He should have ensured his entire party was whiter than white to avoid any suggest of conflicts.

I bet no one would have been lending him the flat if he was leader of the opposition.

He was leader of the opposition when the flat was loaned. 🙄

Oh cmon, at least try to be credible. Everyone knew during the campaign Labour was getting in. If you thought otherwise you were alone.

He was still leader of the opposition. 🤷‍♀️

TLDR but I went to stay with a family friend for a few weeks before my exams at 16. I was too distracted at home and needed to focus so I did exactly the same, and went home at weekends. Minus the clothes and glasses!

He didn’t go to stay with a family friend, they had the flat , the owner wasn’t there, and starmer also lied and pretended he was at home when he was at the flat. He isn’t being honest. He’s done video calls from the flat, and the gcse timing is out. He’s lied as he took it for himself.

and the man is a multi millionaire, he doesn’t need to have his hand out. Or his wife with her free clothes. Or raynor with her freebie trips and clothes.

any decent hard working person can see they are on the take.

My daughters went to a school where there were a lot of girls living in overcrowded accommodation with lots of younger siblings. They all used to go to their local public library to revise in peace and quiet. Believe it or not Keir you can find quite a lot of free and quiet pubic libraries to study in in London.

I think you're remembering many years ago. See opening hours of Tate Library, Lambeth ( an area of deprivation ) and only small area there for study, usually full of adult people using computers etc. Apart from Tuesday when it's open till 8pm, it's not open at all in the evenings, Tuesdays, Sundays.

And is that family friend a peer?

Were either of your parents in the running to be prime minister?

The dates are off and what is with this idea media were camping outside Starmer's house anyway. That type of thing happens for scandals and door stepping

He was just doing scheduled events and photo ops, press had all the access they wanted. He was campaigning he wasn't in hiding.

It's a big old lie

Yes they weren’t camping outside his door, but even if they were it’s evidenced the man is lying. I can’t believe he’s basically blamed his own kid. That’s fucking low. Thought he wanted to protect them, instead he’s brought his own kid straight into the spotlight to protect himself. And the kid will know he’s lying.

AncientAndModern1 · 26/09/2024 08:38

Accepting clothes was stupid and looks a bit pathetic. To me, accepting the loan of a safe, secure and flexible place to stay for his family who felt unsafe after protesters were not just turning up outside their house but were coming right up to the front door is different. The polls made it obvious that they would be in number ten by early July so having a friend offer his place that was comfortable, safe, secure & flexible must have seemed ideal. Going back to the house after exams only to move again to Downing Street would be a lot of upheaval. I imagine everything has been declared now so the stories will die down.

Oh cmon, you can rent those places. And confidentially. Plenty of celebs do. There is no need for freebies.

He must have been traveling loads around the country at that point. Why would anyone camp at his door rather than turn up at a pre arranged location for a press talk

Nuts excuse

Ellerby83 · 26/09/2024 08:48

After saying he wanted to protect his kids he is wheeling them out to protect himself. Plus it's not wholly true as the dates don't match up.

He was clearly using it as a base. I can’t decide what is worse. Him and his wife accepting freebies as they do, basically on the take, or his lying about it and throwing his kid into the spotlight. At least Boris never used his own kids to defend himself.

keir is hardly skint, he’s worth about 8 million. I guess it’s how the rich stay rich . His wife has no reason to be on the hunt for free clothes. She can afford a few hundred,

it’s just so grubby.

Yeah you are. But honestly no matter how much you support one party, you should at least accept and be honest when things are going wrong, or they do something bad, or you lose all credibility. Yes he was the leader of the opposition, yes the poster was being sarcastic with the typo comment, but we all knew he was going to be pm. So trying to make petty arguments like oh he was only leader of the opposition when he had his hands out just makes you look either like you lack understanding or are such a desperate supporter you are trying to defend the indefensible

When you try as hard as he did to build up an image, toolmaker's son etc, then it's all freebies, set up videos and lies then yeh it'll unravel pretty fast

Then you haven’t read any of my other posts. My stance on this is clear. The clothes, glasses, etc are ridiculous and I’m bloody angry about such an unnecessary own goal. Furious in fact. The use of an empty flat for a month and the upgrade of an already paid for season ticket not so much.

I didn’t say he was only the leader of the opposition, I corrected you when you said the flat wouldn’t have been offered if he was leader of the opposition. This is what’s so incredibly frustrating about MN. The twisting of words and denial of saying something that’s there in black and white is so dishonest. Ironic really when the topic under discussion is dishonesty.

There is no defending it. It’s wrong. Period.
He should own up, pay the money back and apologise.
He should then ensure nothing like this happens again.
but we all know he won’t. They are all selfish, opportunistic, grifters.

Does Lord Alli want the money back? I somehow doubt it. In the case of the flat there’s no money to give back because it’s notional value.

He should pay whatever the going rate for the rental is. It’s not about whether they want it or not it’s about being able to say there is no conflict.
Just to be clear I am no conservative. But this is wrong and they all need to do the right thing.

zzpleb · 26/09/2024 09:50

The Telegraph (longer article behind a paywall) is reporting that the Guido Fawkes website has reported that Starmer's recorded TV message in December 2021 encouraging people to work from home if possible (following the Govt re-introducing restrictions re Covid) was filmed in Lord Alli's penthouse (because of the shelving behind him - better photos in Telegraph article).

Interestingly there's a photo of the Starmer family, including the children, in the background. Although judging by their appearances it was taken several years before, so not an accurate representation of what they look like now.

@BIossomtoes you're digging yourself in deeper to your pit. If something is wrong, it's wrong. You can't pick and choose which bits you think are ok. In fact that's worse.
No moral compass whatsoever.

It is impossible for any party leader to ensure that her/his entire party is or was whiter than white.

Edit to say I think there might be some spots of integrity in the House of Commons. I hope I'm not clutching at straws.
