I think Gretchen Whitmer has taken herself out. I've seen reporting this morning (always a possibility it's erroneous) that it's between Kelly and Shapiro. Sarah Longwell, the fabulous pollster, says she can win without Arizona but not without Pennsylvania. For what it's worth.

I enjoyed this article
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/07/trump-looks-older-and-more-deranged/679186/?gift=hVZeG3M9DnxL4CekrWGK3_J-buHC7QCC_8SDbE40c1s&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/07/2024 17:32

How about Mark Kelly? He might be a help with winning Arizona, and I just like the idea of an ex-astronaut as VP, as well as ex-navy generally taking no shit from people. Also, he is nobody's yes-man as far as I have seen, he has name-recognition because of his wife (Gabby Giffords) and unlike Vance he seems able to reason from a to c via b.

Edited to add: oops, hadn't seen Across's post when I wrote that.

I wonder if US media will run stories about Harris council tax bills ?

We don't have 'council tax' in the US.

Can you give a link?

borntobequiet · 23/07/2024 18:19

That Atlantic article is very good, Wallaw!

It reminded me of George W Bush’s remark about Trump’s inauguration speech, “That was some weird shit”.

AcrossthePond55 · 23/07/2024 18:23

Kerry Katona?

Oo's she when she's at 'ome?

The Party is going to have to be extremely practical. And unfortunately that means excluding some excellent choices.

Pete Buttigieg "Too gay for the USA" He'd be my choice but it's too 'iffy' for now if the Party wants to get disaffected conservatives & independents

Gretchen Whitmer - Michigan No chance of having 2 women on the ticket, we're in uncharted territory (female and 'non-white') as it is

Josh Shapiro - Pennsylvania A good 'maybe' to get the swing vote. We've never had a Jewish VP. The US Midwest still has a hard enough time with a Catholic, so will his religion be an issue?

Gavin Newsom - California Potential problem with the electoral college + I don't think he'd accept the offer. He's looking to 2028 and doesn't want to be VP under the incumbent.

Roy Cooper - North Carolina Who? No real 'name recognition' + he's in his late '60s (I know that's not old) and I think we're looking for 'the torch being passed to a new generation' thing.

Andy Beshear - Kentucky Well spoken, has 'name recognition' and is would be a 'moderate' choice. Plus he's a white male. I hate to have to think that way, but there it is.

Ha! I feel like a racetrack handicapper.

So my odds would be on "Beshear by a length at 2 to1, Shapiro's and Cooper's equal odds at 5/1".

I think the thinking behind Ray Cooper was that he’d deliver North Carolina which went Trump in 2020.

Andy Beshear would be my pick purely on the basis it would give me a very tenuous link to the Presidency - I work in horseracing and Kentucky is the US capital of the sport. My old boss became great friends with Steve Beshear (Andy’s dad and former Governor of the state) and I chatted to him on the phone a few times when he’d call the office to catch up with my boss. Like I said, VERY tenuous 😜

Ha! Thanks.

I'm on strong painkillers today. Not hitting on all cylinders, but it does make the current political rapid news information easier to deal with.

I was suggesting that Kamala may be facing the same media shitstorm our now Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner did from our press before the election. What with her being a powerful, very gobby woman from the North who terrifies the UK right.

If I can dream it would be seeing President Harris shaking hands with Angela Rayner and a "we beat the bastards" look between them.

Yeah, sure he does. On his own terms with Fox News moderating.

The ABC debates specified no audience with the mikes to be cut when the speaker's time was up. He'll want a full audience and no cutting the mike. Then he'll have Fox stack the audience and the moderating will be nil when it's Kamala's turn to speak.

That'd be a whole lot of nope from me. Problem is that if Kamala refuses to debate under Trump's terms, they'll say she's afraid to debate him. As if.

I still think she would mop the floor with him, even on his terms, with Fox moderating. I think she's ready for this eventuality and hope she calls his bluff.

BruceAndNosh · 24/07/2024 08:39

Her VP nom has to consider the gap that her pick would leave in their home state and would it be safely democrat in the next election.

The GOP are threatening legal challenges to Harris's elevation. Bloody cheek. The Dems didn't have the chance to say you can't have Trump on your ticket because...... Myriad reasons

Report of Musk backing away from donating his squillions to Trump.
Sounds like he may still be 'giving' just not as openly? However I also think he's probably a graduate of the 'Trump School of Never Actually Paying What You Said You Would.'

Depends if she's debating as VP or POTUS ....

Was thinking the other day that it's fortunate Musk isn't American born - I could imagine him thinking he should could be president.

The GOP are threatening legal challenges to Harris's elevation.

I saw a lawyer comment that's total BS. They can whine, but because it's the Democrat convention that actually approves the nomination, changing names at this stage isn't a problem.

It's not something I - like the GOP - would reserve any brain power for
