I’m calling the date of the next General Election

Thursday 24 October 2024.

My logic is thus:

  1. Tory MPs with kids in private school will want the election after the next academic year starts so that they will get an extra year VAT free while Labour gets its house in order. This is why Jeremy Hunt said the election wouldn’t happen until the Autumn.

  2. Tory MPs will want to take full advantage of the summer holidays/recess so they won’t want to campaign in July/August when they could be on a yacht instead.

  3. Term will start Week Commencing Monday 9 October at the latest. They will want to have a week to sort things out.

  4. So, 6 weeks after the Thursday of the week after 9 September is Thursday 24 October which fits in nicely with half term and they can go on holiday again.

Place your bets.

The grey vote may not turn out if there is wintry weather-when does that start in Scotland?

Here is a confused Tory when confronted with the idea of Scotland.
I don't think Sunak is much more aware of its existence.

Tory voters always turn up or make sure they vote by postal voting

they are not flakey voters the weather would have to be extreme

its the floating and I decided voters and some Labour voters that are less likely to bother

Sophie Corcoran was calling for a ban on postal votes on twitter this weekend.

They usually turn up, but not always.

Being put off by weather is different to staying home because you don't really feel motivated to vote.

Also getting the vote out is not just left to chance.

@Noras "take off taxes on fresh veg, eggs etc"

these aren't taxed.

I think this government will call the election as late as possible.

Dymaxion · 08/05/2024 21:59

I reckon January, just to piss off all the dissenters in his own party.

Sunak doesn't need the job or the money, he won't care if the party destroys itself, with petty infighting, before the next election. He can swan off, on a private jet, to his lovely house in the States and leave it all behind him.

4 July.

They can do all their campaigning before the end of term and then enjoy their school holidays when they’ve lost their seats and are unemployed.

4th July

boys3 · 22/05/2024 15:27

A new take on Independence Day.

plus Rishi can enjoy most of the summer in California.

Bunchesofhyacinths · 22/05/2024 15:31

Yep, 4 July

boys3 · 22/05/2024 15:40

And indeed every Summer thereafter, plus Autumn (or should it be Fall), Winter and Spring.

really does seem a win all round.

<Drums fingernails on kitchen table waiting for announcement>

6pm. Or 8pm. But no later as they’ll want to hit tomorrow’s newspaper headlines.

Do any of you listen to The News Agents podcast? They were joking on there that it won't be the week with 25th October as that is the anniversary of a Canadian election where the Tory party got only 3(!) seats and it was a bit ominous!

It was even worse than that, the Cons went from a majority to only TWO seats.

From Wikipedia "It was the worst defeat, both in absolute terms and in terms of percentage of seats lost, for a governing party at the federal level in Canada, and among the worst ever suffered for a governing party in a Westminster system. It is also one of the few instances of a governing party in any country going from a strong majority to being almost wiped off the electoral map.

boys3 · 22/05/2024 16:31

Looks like my December theory way of the mark. But could not be more pleased to be wrong if a July date is announced in the next few hours.

For 4th July they don't have to announce it til a week tomorrow. So don't hold your breath.
